Motion sensor battery light buying guide

Updated: 20.10.2026

A dark cupboard or a landing with no nearby socket is why you start looking, and amazon.co.uk immediately mixes stick-on lights with outdoor floods and alarm sensors. This motion sensor battery light buying guide is the order of the decision: shape, then power, then colour, before a star rating. The [motion sensor battery comparison](/hub/burglar-protection/motion-sensor-battery) holds the twelve listings. Prices in the 19 October 2026 scrape run from £8.49 to £19.99. What follows is how to choose a type. It does not rank a winner, and it does not tell you which pad to peel first. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Every product here is a small LED with a PIR, for cupboards, stairs, halls and bedside tables. It is not a burglar alarm, a siren or a smart-home detector. These units are listed around 3.7–5 V, or with no voltage. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 3, apply from 50 V AC or 75 V DC upwards, so fitting a puck is not a new circuit. A missing voltage is not a UKCA certificate, and none of the listings shows a test to BS EN IEC 60598-1. Once you know the basket holds a light, the next choice is shape.

Puck, bar or lamp

A stick-on puck suits a hall, a landing or a small cupboard. A bar covers a wider shelf: the BLS T61, the STAR-SPANGLED 7 inch and 11 inch bars, and a generic 20 cm four-pack. The Auraglow AG708 is a freestanding lamp, not something you stick to paint. Renters usually want adhesive, a magnet plate or that lamp. A puck at skirting level can mark a path. A bar inside a wardrobe lights a shelf. The Auraglow, £9.99 in the scrape, comes on within about 6 feet and will not light a worktop from inside a cabinet. Our folder tops out at £19.99. The same shape still fails if it triggers all day.

Cells, USB packs and night-only mode

AA or AAA cells suit a light you can open, and they are generally not in the box. USB suits a light you can unclip: the BLS, Oumida, RAWNICE, Demlaies and the generic 20 cm bar. Cell listings are both AmmToo packs, three STAR-SPANGLED packs, the Detake (one AA) and the Auraglow (three AAA). The AmmToo eight-pack contradicts itself: a rechargeable tag beside AAA bullets. Do not buy it as a sealed pack. Night-only mode is the running cost that stars hide. AmmToo reviews describe daylight triggering that empties AAA cells in about a month. The BLS 120-day line assumes 10 uses a day for 20 seconds. The Detake is listed for the dark, yet one household changed the AA every three or four days. A lower price does not fix a mode you cannot set.

Colour, lumens and the water line

Warm light is kinder at 2 a.m. Cool light is easier in a cupboard, where you are naming a jar. The BLS is 7,000 K, and its bullet says 250 while the table says 180, a clash, not a range to average. STAR-SPANGLED states 80 or 100. RAWNICE states 400, a seller figure. Auto-off is 20 or 30 seconds unless there is an always-on mode. The Auraglow has one. Most of the twelve are not water resistant, and moisture resistant appears without an IP code. Keep this folder out of a shower. A sealed lamp is electrical waste as a whole unit. The cell-versus-USB choice is on rechargeable or alkaline, the night route on stairs and hallways, and who each listing is for on best battery motion sensor light.

Common questions

Is a battery motion sensor a burglar alarm?
No. Here it is an LED with a PIR, for cupboards, stairs, halls and bedside tables. It does not call a monitoring centre. If the listing is an alarm sensor, an outdoor flood or a siren, you are in a different comparison. One page in this set uses outdoor wording without an IP rating. That still does not make it an alarm.
Which shape for a wardrobe, a landing and a bedside?
A bar suits a wardrobe or a worktop. A puck suits a landing or a short hall. The Auraglow AG708 is the bedside shape, a freestanding lamp with about 6 feet of detection on the listing. The same shape still fails if the mode triggers all day and empties the cells.
What lumen level is a night light, and what is a worktop light?
Stated figures run from 50 lumens on the Oumida to 80 or 100 on the STAR-SPANGLED bars, and up to 400 claimed on the RAWNICE. The BLS prints both 250 and 180. An IKEA cupboard light outside the set states 20 lumens. Anything without a lumen line is unknown, not bright.
Are the batteries in the box?
On the AA and AAA listings, the cells are not included. Budget for three AAA on an AmmToo, a 7 inch STAR-SPANGLED or the Auraglow, three AA on the 3.1 inch and 11 inch STAR-SPANGLED lights, and one AA on the Detake. USB models have a built-in cell. The eight-pack’s rechargeable wording conflicts with its AAA bullets.
Can I stick one in a bathroom?
Only on a dry surface, not in the shower. Most listings say not water resistant. Moisture resistant and water resistant have no IP44 or IP65. People stand the Auraglow in a bathroom; the listing still says it is not water resistant.
Do I need an electrician?
Not for these battery lights. They sit below the voltage band in the 2016 regulations, which starts at 50 V AC or 75 V DC. Call an electrician if you want a bathroom luminaire on a new circuit, and a joiner if the stair needs a handrail. A missing UKCA line is not a certificate.
Why do two AmmToo packs share one review count?
The four-pack (B08RXVJG49, £15.09) and the eight-pack (B0B28VC6ZN, £18.04) both show 4.5 from 6,959 reviews, with overlapping text. They are not 13,918 reviews between them. Read the daylight-drain complaint once, and do not pay the eight-pack price for a larger sample that is not there.
