Best DIY home alarm UK: which kit fits which home

Updated: 20.10.2026

You want a bell you can fit yourself, before a long table tells you who should buy which box. There is no single best DIY home alarm UK households should all take home. A flat, a house that wants an outside siren, and a home already in the Ring app are three different purchases. Prices below are amazon.co.uk shelf prices from our [alarm systems comparison](/hub/burglar-protection/alarm-systems) on 19 October 2026. Peter F. used the listings and the review notes, not a lab test and not a Which? score. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A flat or a first kit

X-Sense AS05 at about £59.49 is the start when the place is small and you can hear an indoor sounder. It has 4.5 from 137 reviews, two door sensors, one motion sensor, a keypad and a base the bullets rate at 100 dB. The bullets do not state a monitoring fee. Skip it if you need an outside siren, or if a power cut must not kill the alerts: reviewers say the base has no battery backup. Ring Alarm Pack S at about £139.99 is the other first box, and only if you already use a Ring doorbell. It has one contact and a base station that is the siren. This ASIN shows no amazon.co.uk star rating on the listing we checked, and a subscription is required for app or Alexa arming. Leave it when the flat has a second door and you do not want a plan. Whether an outside box belongs on a shared stair is on burglar alarm for a flat UK.

An outside box without a contract on the listing

Yale HSA Essentials at about £81.88 is the kit when the siren has to be on the wall and the bullets say there is no monitoring fee. It is 4.4 from 997 reviews, with two PIRs, one door contact, a keypad and an external siren stated at 104 dB. The stated range is 30 m, and no GSM or 4G path is stated. Yale IA-320 Sync at about £199.04 is the app kit: 4.3 from 1,766 reviews, the same starter sensor count, a stated 200 m and up to 40 devices. It names Alexa, Google Assistant and Philips Hue, and reviewers call the app clunky. The fee conflict with Ring is on Ring Alarm vs Yale.

You already use Ring

Stay with Ring when the doorbell, the app and Alexa are already in the house, and read the plan before you compare carton prices. None of the five Ring ASINs here shows a star rating on the listings we checked. Pack M at about £159.99 is two contacts and two PIRs. Pack L at about £209.99 is four contacts and three PIRs, still without an outdoor siren. Pack L with the outdoor siren is about £269.99. Pack XL at about £309.99 adds a sixth contact and keeps the outdoor siren. App or Alexa arming, Alarm Calls and cellular backup sit on a subscription, and that subscription is not a police unique reference number.

Leave these if the box contents are unclear

LWOHSI A108S at about £39.99 is 3.9 from 736 reviews. The included-components line says one alarm system only, so you cannot count the contacts. Swokely at about £55.99 is 3.9 from 62 reviews, and a reviewer described the GSM path as a 2G or 3G SIM. XUK at about £139.99 does count eight contacts, four PIRs and a 4G path that still needs a SIM. The file is 4.2 from 19 reviews, many of them not in English. Placement, once the carton is chosen, is on how to install a wireless burglar alarm.

Common questions

Which kit should I buy for a flat?
X-Sense AS05 at about £59.49 if you want two door sensors, one PIR and no monitoring fee on the bullets, and you can hear the base indoors. Ring Pack S at about £139.99 if you already use a Ring doorbell and can accept one contact plus a subscription. Neither includes an outdoor siren. Pack S has no star line on the listing we checked.
Which kit includes an outside siren?
Yale HSA Essentials, Yale IA-320 Sync, the XUK 21-piece kit, Ring Pack L with outdoor siren, and Ring Pack XL. The other Ring packs use the base station. X-Sense reviewers say no outdoor siren is in the AS05 or AS08 kit. The Ring siren packs have no star line on those ASINs.
Is the cheapest panel a false economy?
It is, if you cannot count the sensors. LWOHSI at about £39.99 has 736 reviews at 3.9 and a spec line that does not itemise contacts or PIRs. Swokely at about £55.99 names a remote in the contents line. A low price helps only after you know what is in the carton.
Do the Ring packs have star ratings in our data?
No. The five Ring ASINs in this set have no amazon.co.uk star rating or review count on the listings we checked. Review notes mention setup time and subscriptions. They are not a substitute for Yale's 4.4 from 997 or X-Sense's 4.5 from 137.
Is X-Sense AS08 just a bigger AS05?
It is the larger sensor count, not a siren upgrade. AS08 at about £84.99 has four door sensors and two PIRs, against two doors and one PIR on the AS05. Both are corded, both state about 100 dB from the base, and reviewers say there is no outside siren. Buy it for the extra openings.
What should I skip if I need the police to be called?
Skip all twelve if the requirement is a police unique reference number. These are self-fitted amazon.co.uk kits. NSI ties police response to alarms that meet the published standards, and an app notification is not that response. Ring's Guard Response plan is an exterior check, not a promise that an officer will enter.
