How to use a mechanic's seat

Updated: October 2026

The stool is still in the box. How to use a mechanic's seat, for the seats in this set, is a short sequence: check the parts, build it, set the height, lock any brake that exists, and move it without pulling a loose pad off. Listings and UK review notes were read on 16 October 2026. There was no filmed assembly. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which seat to buy is on the [workshop stool comparison](/hub/workshop/workshop-stool). If you have not chosen a height yet, start with the [mechanic's seat buying guide](/hub/workshop/workshop-stool/sub/workshop-stool-buying-guide).

Check the box against the listing

Open the carton before you tighten anything, and match the parts to the components line, not to the title. The VEVOR listing in this set, B0F2H56W27, says roller creeper and then lists four foot pads, with a style line that says no castors. The BILITOOLS listing says assembly is not required in one field and takes minutes in the bullets, so the sheet in the carton settles it. UK reviews say the red HOMCOM pad lifts off and can be used as a crawler pad, until you try to carry the stool. HOMCOM listings state four castors, two with brakes. The Hilka states five swivel castors and does not mention brakes. If a bag of bolts is short, stop and follow the sheet that came with the stool.

Assemble, then recheck

Hilka owners on amazon.co.uk describe the build as easy and tell you to keep the spanner. They also say bolts loosen. After the first roll across the garage, go round the fixings again. The black HOMCOM is the one to treat gently at the wheels. UK reviews say a tube deforms if the wheel bolts are over-tightened, with a separate report of a bent frame. Tighten until the wheel is secure and the tube is still round. If the hole starts to oval, stop. A bent frame is a reason to reject the stool, not a weekend weld.

Height, brakes, and moving it

On a gas-lift seat, sit, then use the lever. The Hilka lists 400–520 mm. The BILITOOLS lists 21.5–29.5 inches with a one-hand lever. Set the height before you lean into the arch. If the pad drops from the top to the bottom in a few minutes, as one Hilka UK review describes, that strut is finished. Where brakes are stated, lock them before you lean, and try them empty. Both HOMCOM listings say two of four castors have brakes. The Hilka listing does not state brakes, so do not wedge a castor and call it locked. Move a loaded red HOMCOM by the frame, not by the cushion. Wheel size and slope sit on the garage floor page.

When to stop

Stop using the stool if the gas strut sinks on its own, if the frame has bent, or if a wheel tube has deformed. A hose clamp is a short-term idea for a desk chair, not a repair for a seat you lean from beside a car. For a fault there from the start, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject runs for 30 days. A stool is not an axle stand. If the car is only on a jack, do not roll underneath it. Low or tall is on the mechanic's seat or shop stool page.

Common questions

What order do I assemble a mechanic's seat in?
Check the parts against the listing before you tighten anything. Confirm castors or foot pads, then follow the sheet in the box. Hilka reviewers say the build is easy if you keep the spanner. After the first roll, recheck the bolts. The BILITOOLS page contradicts itself on whether assembly is required, so the sheet wins.
How far should I tighten the wheel bolts?
Tighten until the wheel is secure and the tube is still round. UK reviews of the black HOMCOM say a tube deforms if the wheel bolts are over-tightened, and a separate review describes a bent frame. If the hole starts to oval, stop. More force will not round the tube, and that stool should go back.
What if the seat sinks straight away?
Stop using it. One Hilka UK review says the seat drops from the maximum to the minimum in a few minutes, and another says the adjuster failed after three uses. Do not copy an office-chair hose-clamp fix for a seat you lean from beside a car. A dead strut is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a workshop repair.
Can I lift a rolling mechanic stool by the seat?
Not the red HOMCOM, once tools are on it. UK reviews say the pad lifts off and can be used empty as a crawler pad, and that it disconnects if you lift the loaded stool by the cushion. Move that stool by the frame. An empty pad coming off on purpose is a different action from a loaded tray hitting the floor.
When do I lock the brakes?
Lock stated brakes before you lean, and try them empty on the floor you will use. Both HOMCOM listings say two of four castors have brakes. The Hilka listing does not state brakes, so do not wedge a castor and call it locked. If an empty braked stool still creeps on a slope, it will creep with you on it.
Can I use a mechanic's seat under a car that is only on a jack?
No. A stool is not an axle stand. If the vehicle is only on a jack, do not roll underneath it. Get the car onto stands, or leave the job. If the repair itself is beyond you, or the stool's frame has already bent, stop and get help rather than sitting closer to the fault.
