Mechanic's seat buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a brake job, and a search for a workshop stool has mixed a roller about 33 cm high with a stool near a metre. A mechanic's seat buying guide starts with that height, because the wrong band leaves you squatting under the arch or too high for a caliper. Prices sit on our [workshop stool comparison](/hub/workshop/workshop-stool). If the choice is already low roller versus tall shop stool, use the [mechanic's seat or shop stool](/hub/workshop/workshop-stool/sub/workshop-stool-mechanic-seat-or-shop-stool) page. Listings were read on 16 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the height to the job

Three bands show up once you ignore step stools and salon stools. A fixed mechanic's roller in this set is about 33–35 cm overall, the HOMCOM pattern, close to the concrete for a disc or a lower panel. The Hilka 82620100 lists 400–520 mm, so you can drop it for the wheel and raise it a little for a sill. The BILITOOLS listing states 21.5–29.5 inches, about 55–75 cm, with a backrest. The VEVOR listing states 1030–1140 mm and packs foot pads, not castors. A 70 cm stool does not put your hands on a caliper, and a 35 cm seat does not suit a standing bench. The best mechanic's seat page names a top pick only after that choice.

Read the load as a claim

Every stool in this set prints a maximum, and none of those figures was retested here. The Hilka listing states 120 kg. Both HOMCOM listings state 135 kg. The VEVOR listing states 300 lb, about 136 kg, and the BILITOOLS listing states 330 lb, about 150 kg. Treat them as the seller's ceiling. BS EN 1335-2 is an office-chair standard for long sitting and a user mass up to 110 kg. These listings do not claim it, and a garage stool is not an office chair.

Wheels, brakes, and a tray

Read the components line for how many castors, whether a diameter is stated, and whether the word brake appears. The HOMCOM seats list four swivel castors and two brakes. The black listing adds 10 cm rubber wheels. The Hilka lists five swivel castors and does not state brakes or a diameter. The BILITOOLS listing states castors without a count, a size, or brakes. The VEVOR style line says no castors, and the box list is four foot pads. The Hilka has integrated trays. The red HOMCOM adds a drawer, two trays, and two cup holders, and UK reviews say that pad lifts off if you pick the loaded stool up by the cushion. Diameter and brakes on rough concrete are on the mechanic's seat for an uneven garage floor page.

Rules that do and do not apply

If you are seating staff, regulation 11 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires a suitable seat where the work can or must be done sitting, and a footrest where the feet cannot rest flat. HSE's approved code, L24, adds lower-back support where possible. That duty sits on the employer. A private Saturday brake job has not failed the rule because the stool is backless. A stool is not an axle stand. If the car is only on a jack, get the vehicle onto stands or leave the job.

Common questions

What seat height do I need for brake and wheel work?
For discs, wheel bolts, and lower panels, use a seat around 33–52 cm. In this set that is a HOMCOM roller at about 33–35 cm, or the Hilka at a stated 400–520 mm. A shop stool at 21.5–29.5 inches, about 55–75 cm, sits too high for a caliper. Match the band to the job before you compare prices.
Is a stated 120 kg or 135 kg a test?
No. Those figures are the seller's stated maximum on the amazon.co.uk listing. The Hilka states 120 kg, and both HOMCOM listings state 135 kg. Products Compared did not retest them. A higher printed number does not by itself mean a stronger frame, and it is not a certificate.
Do I need four large wheels or five smaller castors?
Read the diameter, not only the count. The black HOMCOM states 10 cm rubber castors, which UK reviewers bought for uneven tarmac. The Hilka states five swivel castors and does not state a diameter. Five small wheels can roll well on smooth concrete and still stick on a broken slab.
Do I need brake castors on a garage stool?
You need them if the floor slopes or you lean hard to one side. Both HOMCOM listings state two brakes out of four castors. The Hilka listing does not state brakes. On a level slab you may not miss a lock. Try any stated brake empty before you sit down.
Does an office-chair British Standard apply?
BS EN 1335-2 is an office-chair standard for long sitting and a user mass up to 110 kg. These workshop listings do not claim it, and a backless roller is not that chair. Do not treat a claim of meeting EN 1335 as a reason to buy a garage stool, because the claim is not on these pages.
What if staff sit to do the job?
Regulation 11 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires a suitable seat where employed work can or must be done sitting, and a footrest where the feet cannot rest flat. That duty sits on the employer. A private weekend job is not the same rule, even if a backless stool is a poor all-day seat.
