Engine crane for a home garage

Updated: October 2026

The garage is a single bay and a 2 tonne title is in the basket. An engine crane for a home garage is a room test first: whether a gantry in this set can stand, what folded means, and how heavy the delivery is. The family split is on [engine crane vs gantry crane](/hub/workshop/workshop-crane/sub/workshop-crane-engine-or-gantry). The lift is on [how to use an engine crane](/hub/workshop/workshop-crane/sub/workshop-crane-how-to-use). Stickers are on our [workshop crane comparison](/hub/workshop/workshop-crane). Measure the ceiling before the tonne

A domestic garage often fails a gantry before it fails a folding crane. Sealey’s SG500 and SG1000KITG both list a height of 2,400–3,600 mm, set while the beam is unladen. If the ceiling, measured to the lowest joist or the door gear, is under 2.4 m, those gantries do not stand. The 3,600 mm figure does not let you start lower than the minimum. UK sellers also repeat an SG1000 width of about 2,400 mm, so a narrow bay can fail on width even when the ceiling clears. If the beam cannot stand, the folding crane is the other family. This page only decides whether the frame fits the building.

What you can store between jobs

A folding crane earns its place by going away. Sealey’s SC10.V5 instructions give a folded leg height of 1,440 mm and a length of 1,620 mm, stored with the ram closed. The amazon.co.uk file lists 30 × 10 × 30 cm and 75 kg, and power source AC. Do not plan a cupboard around the 30 cm line. Nett weight on the instruction is 67 kg. Keep 67 kg and 75 kg side by side. Do not average them. The cheaper Garvee says it folds and lists 156 × 92 × 180 cm, but folded dimensions are not stated. JHflor states no folded size and no weight. Among these files, only the SC10 instruction gives both a folded height and a length.

The floor and the delivery

These cranes want a firm, level floor. Concrete is the usual domestic answer. A suspended timber floor or a sloping drive is not certified by any listing here. Castors hold a positioned crane. They do not make a slope safe. Delivery weight is the number at the door. The SG500 is 100 kg. The SG1000KITG is 174 kg. The SC10 is 75 kg on amazon and 67 kg on the instruction. The cheaper Garvee is 59.9 kg. The dearer Garvee is 64 kg. JHflor does not state a weight, so you cannot plan the stairs. Treat 100 kg and 174 kg as a two-person carry.

What this page will not decide

Which listing is the top pick, and which is the best value, is a different page. A room that fits a folding crane should still not ignore a UK review that an SC10 ram would not hold. If the ram sinks, you stop.

Common questions

Will a gantry fit under a normal garage ceiling?
Only if the ceiling clears 2,400 mm at the lowest point. That is the minimum these Sealey listings state, set unladen. Many single garages do not clear it. Measure under the door motor and the joists, not at the roof apex.
How much space does a folded crane need?
For the Sealey SC10, the instruction says 1,440 mm folded height and 1,620 mm length, stored with the ram closed. That is the figure to mark on the wall. Leave a path so the folded crane is not something you climb over.
Can I trust the amazon size line for the SC10?
Not for storage. The file says 30 × 10 × 30 cm and power source AC beside 75 kg. Sealey’s instruction says 1,440 mm folded and a nett weight of 67 kg. The same caution applies to the gantries’ 1 × 1 × 1 cm and 50 × 227 × 25 cm lines, which are not the standing beam.
How heavy is the delivery?
The SG500 at 100 kg and the SG1000 kit at 174 kg are the two-person carry. JHflor does not state a weight. The maker’s SC10 figure is 67 kg, beside 75 kg on amazon.
Can I adjust the gantry height with an engine on the hook?
No. The 2,400–3,600 mm range is set unladen. Sealey also says the SG1000 is not to be moved while loaded. Lower the engine, or do not raise it, before you change the beam height. A folding crane’s jib hole is chosen before the lift as well, from the chart, not while the engine is swinging.
Does LOLER apply to my own car at home?
Not as a private hobby lift that risks nobody else. That is the Health and Safety Executive’s line. It is not a free pass to skip the chart or to stand under the engine. The moment the garage has staff, or the car is a customer’s, you are in the work rules, including examination. This page does not appoint you as the competent person.
