Engine crane buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a title that says 2 tonne, and the engine you mean to lift may be a fraction of that. An engine crane buying guide is the order of the checks: which number on the boom you will actually use, when a missing chart means the capacity is unknown, and why a gantry price can still leave the chain block out. The six amazon.co.uk listings, from about £179.99 to about £1,296.51, are on our [workshop crane comparison](/hub/workshop/workshop-crane). Products Compared read these listings and the public sources on 16 October 2026. There was no load test. A purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the tonne on the title actually rates

The large figure on a folding engine crane is the safe working load at the shortest jib position, not the weight you can hang at full stretch. Tooled Up, a UK tool retailer, says capacity falls as the boom extends. Their rule of thumb for many car engines with the gearbox still fitted is 150–300 kg, plus at least 20 per cent over the heaviest load you plan. On a folding crane the configuration is the hole you pin. On a gantry it is the lowest rating among the beam, the trolley, and the chain block.

A chart you can read, and listings that do not print one

Sealey’s own SC10 page charts 1,000 kg at 830 mm, falling to 250 kg at 1,190 mm. The amazon.co.uk file for B000RA0GDO says 1 ton and does not print that chart. Garvee B0GGYF14WP and Garvee B0H699LTM3 both name 0.5 t to 2 t and print no millimetres. JHflor B0HFX94TZX says 2 tons and prints no positions. Named fits are on best engine crane.

Tackle, ceiling, and who LOLER binds

A folding crane in this set lifts with a ram and a hook. A gantry lifts with a chain block, and that tackle is not automatically in the price. The SG500 says lifting tackle is not included. The SG1000KITG package line includes a PT1000G trolley and a CB1000 chain block with a 2.5 m drop, and a safety line says tackle is not included. Keep both sentences. Both Sealey gantries list a height of 2,400–3,600 mm, set unladen. None of these listings states UKCA.

What you still have not chosen

This page does not crown a listing. If the engine’s weight and the chart for the hole you will pin are both missing, stop. An engine stand is the support after the lift, not this purchase. If you already know the job and only need the family, engine crane vs gantry crane is the shorter route.

Common questions

What capacity do I need for a normal car engine?
Tooled Up’s band is a rule of thumb, not a weight for your car. A 1 tonne title can still be 250 kg at the long hole, which is what Sealey’s SC10 chart shows at 1,190 mm. Use a figure for that engine, then read the hole you will actually pin.
Why does a 2 tonne crane become 500 kg at full stretch?
The short pin is the big number. As the jib lengthens, the ram works further from the legs, so the rated load falls. Sealey’s PH20, which is not in this set, shows the pattern: 2,000 kg at 860 mm and 500 kg at 1,340 mm. A 2 tonne title that never prints those millimetres has not promised you 2 tonnes over the wing. Treat the long hole as unknown until the chart names it.
What if the listing has no millimetre chart?
Treat the capacity at your reach as unknown. Garvee’s two folding cranes name four tonne steps and print no millimetres. JHflor names 2 tons and prints no steps. Do not copy Sealey’s 830 mm or 1,190 mm onto those files. Ask for the chart that belongs to that model, or buy a crane whose maker publishes one you can read before you pay.
Does the price include a chain block?
On the folding cranes here, the ram and hook are the hoist. The SG500 says tackle is not included. On the SG1000KITG, the package line includes a 1,000 kg trolley and a CB1000 block with a 2.5 m drop, and a safety line says tackle is not included. Budget for a block rated to the same safe working load unless you have confirmed it is in that carton.
Will a gantry fit under a garage ceiling?
Only if the ceiling clears 2,400 mm, which is the minimum these Sealey listings state, set unladen. A beam that adjusts up to 3,600 mm does not help if it cannot stand at the low end. You do not shorten a loaded gantry to fit under the joists. If the ceiling is under 2.4 m, you are back to a folding crane. Measure to the lowest joist, not to the roof apex.
Does LOLER apply if I only lift my own car?
LOLER binds lifting equipment used at work. A private hobby lift, where the work risks nobody else, is outside that audience on the Health and Safety Executive’s equipment FAQ. A garage with staff, or a customer’s vehicle, is work. The chart, locked legs, and nobody under the load still apply at home. This page is not a competent person’s examination.
