How to use a folding workbench

Updated: October 2026

You have a folding bench in the hallway, or a carton that is clearly not ready to saw on, and the paper sheet does not match the parts in your hand. That is a common first hour with a BLACK+DECKER Workmate on amazon.co.uk. This page is how to use a folding workbench: build it or unfold it, clamp before you cut, and fold it empty so you learn where your fingers go. The Products Compared editorial team did not film a build. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The rankings are on the [workbench comparison](/hub/workshop/workbench). If you bought the wrong type, start with the [workbench buying guide](/hub/workshop/workbench/sub/workbench-buying-guide).

Build it, or just unfold it

Split the set before you reach for a screwdriver. The Bosch PWB 600 listing says no assembly. UK reviews say it arrives built and opens quickly. The PONY listing says you unfold it and use it. The STANLEY FATMAX Express is the awkward one: one attribute says assembly is required and another says it is not. UK reviews say you open it and work. The WM301, WM536, WM825, and WM626 all need a build. The WM626 listing says no detailed instructions are included. Do not follow a WM425 manual. For the WM825, use BLACK+DECKER's UK support video. A video for a different Workmate will put a pin in the wrong place.

Clamp the work, then cut

Clamp before the first cut, on a bench that is fully open and on a floor that does not rock. On a Workmate the split top is the vice. You wind the cranks until the jaws meet the work, and you use the swivel pegs in the holes the bench actually has. A door on edge needs the pegs behind it so the board cannot kick out when the saw catches. A folding table holds work down onto the top. The Stanley has dog holes and does not include clamps. Do not treat the bench as a circular saw bench. HSE WIS16 describes a guarded saw bench, which is a different machine. The kilogram claims were not tested here, and they are not permission to stand on the top.

Fold it and put it away

Fold the bench empty the first time. On the Stanley, UK reviews warn you to keep your fingers clear. The folded pack is 85 × 61 × 11 cm, about 10.5 kg. The WORX folds to 79 × 63.5 × 13 cm. At 13.9 kg it is the one reviewers call heavy to carry. Stop if a leg will not lock. The WM301's 12.5 × 15.5 × 84 cm line is a carton, not a folded top. Whether you should have bought a fixed shelf unit is the folding or fixed decision.

When something is wrong

A wobble after the first evening is often a bolt left finger-tight. A collapse is different. One United Kingdom review of the WM626 says two legs collapsed after about a month. Those are fault reports, not a rate we measured across 582 reviews. If a leg unlocks under a normal board, stop using it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, expects satisfactory quality given the description and the price. Stop and get a competent person when employees will use the bench, when the cut is really a circular saw bench, or when a lead looks wrong. These steps do not turn a Workmate into workplace equipment under PUWER. Which folding bench was worth buying stays on the best workbench page.

Common questions

How do I assemble a BLACK+DECKER Workmate when the leaflet fails?
Match the model number, then use that model's video. For the WM825, BLACK+DECKER UK publishes an assembly article, and owners report that the packed sheet assumes a part-built bench. Do not follow a WM425 manual and expect the same release levers on a WM301 or WM626. If a pin will not seat, stop. Forcing it bends the frame, and the bench will rack once you put weight on one side.
How do I clamp with one hand on a Workmate?
Only where that model lists a one-handed clamp. The WM825 does. You still set the swivel pegs, and you still close the jaw on the work before you cut. A one-handed crank does not hold a door by itself if the pegs are in the parts bag. On a dual-crank WM536 you use both handles. Do not assume every Workmate in this set has the same control.
How do I fold it without trapping my fingers?
Fold it empty once and watch the gap. On the STANLEY FATMAX Express, reviews tell you to keep your fingers clear as the top closes to 11 cm. Support the leaf. Do not let it drop. On a Workmate, use the latch that model actually has, not a lever copied from an older PDF. If a leg will not lock open or closed, treat that as a fault and stop.
Can I use it as a sawhorse?
Yes, for supporting a board, a door, or a length of timber while you cut with a hand tool, with the offcut held. The folding benches in this set are sold for that. No, you should not turn one into a circular saw bench. HSE WIS16 describes a guarded saw bench, which is a different machine. A 250 kg claim was not a test of you standing on the top.
When is a wobble a fault rather than a loose bolt?
Tighten every fixing first, including the height locks. If the rock disappears, it was the build. If a WM536 still flexes sideways, or a WM825 top still feels loose, that matches complaints already in the UK reviews and you decide whether you can live with it. If a leg collapses, as one WM626 reviewer reported after about a month, stop and return it. That is not a bolt you forgot.
