Workbench buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a single garage, and amazon.co.uk has put a Workmate, a folding table, and a steel shelf unit on the same Workbenches list. A clamp bench grips a board and packs away. A folding table is a flat top. A garage bench with shelves stays put. This workbench buying guide is the decision, not the ranking. The [workbench comparison](/hub/workshop/workbench) scores twelve listings from that UK list. Here you name the job first, then you read a kilogram or a plug line as a claim. The Products Compared editorial team did not load-test a bench. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three benches share one name

Start with Monday’s job, not the star sort. If you need to grip a door or a panel and then fold the bench away, you want a clamp bench: a Workmate, or the Bosch PWB 600. The WM301 needs assembly. The Bosch listing says it arrives built with four blade clamps. Paying more does not change the type. If you want a flat table, look at the STANLEY FATMAX Express, the WORX Pegasus, or the PONY. Dog holes do not replace a split top if you are squeezing a door on edge. If the tools have to live on the bench all week, you are looking at a fixed garage shelf bench. The Monster Shop units, blue model 28786 and black model 28778, are steel frames with two MDF shelves. They do not fold and they do not clamp. The folding or fixed workbench page takes that fork on its own. Stars will not turn a shelf unit into a vice.

Load, height, and jaws

Every kilogram here is a listing claim. This comparison did not stack weights on any bench. The WORX line mixes 300 lb with Italian, so there is no single kilogram. A higher number is not a better bench. Height is the part you can check against your elbow. HSE guidance puts ordinary standing work about 50–100 mm below elbow height. The WM825 states 800 mm or 620 mm. The PONY lists six steps from 765 mm to 890 mm. Jaws are not the same as clamps in the box. A skirting board points to jaws. A flat glue-up points to a table. The best workbench page names one portable pick and one cheaper pick once you know you want something that folds.

Packed size is not the open top

Packed size is the easiest misread. The WM301 dimension line is 12.5 × 15.5 × 84 cm. That is the carton, not a working top you can saw on. The Stanley is clearer: 85 × 61 × 80 cm open and 85 × 61 × 11 cm folded, at about 10.5 kg.

Copied reviews, plugs, and when to stop

Review counts can be copied. The blue and black Monster Shop files both show 4.4 from 533, and the text matches, so that is one pool. The LARBANKE 110 cm shows 4.7 from 5 reviews, which is not comparable with the Bosch 4.7 from 5,322. Sockets appear on only one listing, the LARBANKE 120 cm. It says they are ETL marked. ETL is not a BS 1363 plug under the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994, so look at the plug before you connect it. If staff will use the bench, or you need a circular saw bench, stop and get a competent person. Why a thin MDF top sags is on the garage workbench page.

Common questions

Should I buy a folding workbench or a garage bench with shelves?
Buy a folding workbench if the floor has to come back or you need jaws for a job that ends the same day. Buy the garage shelf bench if tools have to live on it all week and you can spare about 100 × 60 cm. In this set the Monster Shop units do not clamp, and the Workmates do not give you two shelves. The wrong type costs more time than the wrong brand.
What does a listed load in kilograms actually mean?
It is the seller’s claim on that amazon.co.uk page. This comparison did not test 160 kg, 200 kg, 250 kg, 450 kg, or 900 kg. A point load in the middle of a thin top is a different stress from an even load across the whole shelf. Use the number to see what was printed, then read the UK reviews for flex, sag, and legs that moved. Do not treat the largest figure as the best bench.
How high should a standing workbench be?
Match it to the work, not to a single correct centimetre. HSE guidance puts manipulative standing work about 50–100 mm below elbow height, precision work slightly higher, and heavy downward work lower. A fixed 90 cm shed bench will suit some people and leave others reaching or stooping. If elbow height matters in your house, prefer a listing that states two heights or a range, and measure your elbow before you trust the minimum line alone.
Is a workbench with sockets ready for a UK plug?
Only the LARBANKE 120 cm lists sockets, and it cites ETL rather than BS 1363. Check the plug before you use the strip. The other listings do not claim mains sockets. A non-UK plug is a reason to return the bench, not a reason to force an adapter.
Do I need built-in jaws or will dog holes do?
Jaws suit a door, a board on edge, or anything you would put in a vice. Dog holes and included bar clamps suit a flat top, a sawhorse, and work you hold from above. The Bosch brings four blade clamps. The Stanley expects you to add FATMAX clamps. The Monster Shop has neither. If you are unsure, picture the first job. A skirting board points to jaws. A flat glue-up points to a table.
