Folding workbench or garage bench

Updated: October 2026

The car is in the garage the shed is already full of paint. A folding workbench or a garage bench is the fork. If the bench must disappear between jobs, buy one that folds flat and decide whether you need jaws. If tools must live on it all week, buy the fixed shelf bench and accept that it will not clamp. Products Compared did not test any load claim. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Both types are on the [workbench comparison](/hub/workshop/workbench).

What you are actually choosing

Three patterns share the word, and only two of them are this decision. A folding clamp bench grips work in a split top or with blade clamps, then packs away. A folding table gives you a flat top and also packs away. A fixed garage shelf bench is a steel frame with MDF shelves that stays where you built it. A timber top on lockable castors rolls. It does not fold flat. Use one test. Will this bench still be open on Monday morning? If the car comes back, you are buying a fold. If the tools should stay out all week, you are buying a fixed bench. Stars do not answer that. The workbench buying guide goes on to height and jaws after you have passed this test.

When the floor has to come back

If the space is shared with a car, stay with a folding model. The cheapest clamp bench here is the WM301 at £34.00. Its 12.5 × 15.5 × 84 cm line is a carton, so measure the fold after you build it. The Bosch PWB 600 is the same type of object with no assembly, if you will use the jaws often enough to justify it. Which of those two to buy is on the best workbench page. A folding table gets the floor back and is weaker if the job is a vice. If you need to squeeze a door on edge, you still want jaws. That is still a smaller mistake than a shelf bench that cannot clamp the skirting you bought it for.

When the bench is furniture

If the bench will still be there on Monday, buy the fixed shelf pattern and stop looking at Workmate jaws. In this set that is the Monster Shop bench, blue or black, 60 × 100 × 90 cm, two MDF shelves, £44.99. It does not fold. It has no vice and no dog holes. UK reviews say the MDF is thin and some tops sag. The detail of that sag belongs on the garage workbench page. The gain is that a drill and a box of screws can stay on the lower shelf. In a single garage, measure the door swing first. A Workmate can clamp, and it cannot leave a week's tools on two shelves. Compare price inside the type you actually need.

Wheels are not a fold

The LARBANKE benches roll. They do not fold flat. The 120 cm model has a rubber-wood top, five heights from 85 to 105 cm, and four lockable castors. You cannot stand either one 11 cm from the wall the way you can the Stanley. A locked castor still occupies 120 × 50 cm. A folded Stanley occupies a slab 11 cm thick. Do not buy castors expecting a fold, and do not buy shelves expecting a vice.

Common questions

Folding workbench or a garage bench: which one?
Choose a folding workbench if the floor has to be clear between jobs, especially when a car shares the garage. Choose a garage shelf bench if the tools should stay out all week and you can spare about 100 × 60 cm permanently. In this set, folding models clamp or take dogs. The Monster Shop shelf bench does neither. The better brand inside the wrong type still fails the Monday test.
Can a Workmate replace a shed bench?
It can replace the clamping, and it cannot replace the storage. A WM301 or a Bosch PWB 600 holds a door and then folds. It will not keep screws, a sander, and paint on two shelves while you are out. If the shed's problem is clutter on the floor, a Workmate moves the clutter into the cupboard. If the problem is that you need a vice for an hour, the Workmate is the right replacement.
If I have a single garage and a car, which type?
Prefer a folding bench, and measure the door swing before you consider leaving anything open. A 100 cm fixed bench in the middle of a single garage fights the car. A bench on the end wall can stay if the door still opens. The Stanley's folded thickness is 11 cm. The WM301's printed size is a carton, so measure that one after you build it, not from the product page.
Is a bench on wheels the same as a folding bench?
No. The LARBANKE models have lockable castors. They roll and then stay at full size. A folding bench packs down: the Stanley to 11 cm thick, the WORX to 79 × 63.5 × 13 cm. Wheels are useful when you need to sweep behind a bench that lives in the garage. They do not give you the boot space or the empty floor that a fold is for.
What do I lose if I only buy shelves?
You lose any listed way to grip the work. The Monster Shop benches have no jaws and no clamps in the box. You can still stand a small job on the MDF if it does not need holding, and you gain two shelves. UK reviews say that top can sag, and the 200 kg line was not tested. If the first job is a door or a skirting board, shelves alone send you back to the floor.
