How to set up a work light tripod

Updated: October 2026

The box is open on the garage floor, the inner tubes are still nested, and you want the heads at the wall before the paint goes on. How to set up a work light tripod starts with the feet and the lead, not with the tallest number on the listing. This page is the procedure for the stands in the [work light with tripod comparison](/hub/workshop/work-light-with-tripod). It does not pick a model. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings dated 16 October 2026, UK review notes and HSE’s user checks. We did not assemble every stand in a lab. Feet on the floor before the pole goes up

Put the stand on a flat floor and open the legs fully before you raise anything. Lock the legs, then extend the centre sections. Run the lead where you will not step on it. wowspeed’s 3 m lead barely clears a stand in the middle of a bay. A 5 m or 5.5 m lead gives the feet more room. Keep the plug and any cable switch off a wet patch. Check the plug, the cable grip and the sheath with the kit unplugged. If the flex is already damaged, stop. HSE says a damaged cable is replaced by a competent person. Which listing to have bought is on the buying guide.

The height you can actually get

Raise one section at a time and lock it before you pull the next. The height on the carton is not the height in the room. EOTO’s title says 47–68 inches and the bullet says 80–140 cm. Those are two ranges. Do not add them or average them. Stop if a collar will not hold. T-SUN is the stand that looks short. UK reviews say it sits near 1.2 m until you pull an inner pole that is still inside the top section. Pull that section by hand. If it will not move, do not lever it.

Aim the heads, then leave the housing alone

Fit the heads only after the feet and the pole are locked. Twin heads, on T-SUN, NATPOW and CORESLUX, usually want both lamps on the wall you are painting, overlapping in the middle rather than pointed at each other. Three-head stands, where the listing says the lamps come off, let you drop one head for a low corner. Unplug before you take a head off a live bar. SYLSTAR is one 360° column, so you aim a pole, not three floods. UK reviews describe a finger trap. Lower a section that will not lock.

Switch, unplug, or stop

The cable switch is enough only when the light goes dark and the plug is quiet. A wowspeed reviewer found the LEDs still dimly lit and unplugged the set. If the plug buzzes, unplug it and leave it unplugged. Missing bolts are a return. Do not drill the bar or improvise a screw. The light is not set up if the heads cannot be fixed. Bag SYLSTAR’s remote before you fold the pole. A UK review says dimming is difficult without it, and a section that will not lock should be lowered, not worked under. A yellow site outlet is the 230 V or 110 V page, not a step here. No socket at all is the mains or rechargeable choice.

Common questions

Why does the stand stop at about 1.2 m?
On T-SUN, UK reviews say a second pole is still inside the top section, so the stand looks about 1.2 m until that inner tube is pulled free. The bullet says 24–61.3 inches. Pull the section by hand. If it will not move, do not lever it. A carton size is not that range.
What if a bolt is missing?
Stop and return it. T-SUN reviews report missing brackets or the bolts that hold the heads to the bar. A head that cannot be fixed is not a finished setup, and a spinning NATPOW mounting screw is the same class of fault. Do not drill the bar or improvise a fixing. Ask for the missing parts or send the light back.
Can I touch the head after it has been on?
Expect it to be hot. BDDFOTO’s listing says the housing gets hot, and a T-SUN review says the heads get very hot. Do not cover the head, and do not stare into the beam. Unplug, then wait before you fold the stand or lift a lamp off the bar. A smell of burning or a plug that buzzes is not heat you should ignore.
Should I unplug it, or is the cable switch enough?
Unplug it if the LEDs stay dimly lit, which a wowspeed reviewer reported, or if you are leaving the garage. The cable switch is not a waterproof control on wowspeed, and T-SUN’s switches are described as indoor-style. IP66 on the head does not change that. Overnight, the plug out of the wall is the off position you can see.
What do I do if the plug buzzes?
Unplug it at once and leave it unplugged. Do not open the plug, and do not tape the flex. HSE says a damaged cable is replaced by a competent person. Two UK reviews of the wowspeed flood describe arcing or a buzzing plug. That light comes off the job. It does not go back on with a different extension lead.
