How to use a stair climbing trolley

Updated: October 2026

You already have a six-wheel shopper or a manual tri-wheel sack truck, and the flight is the part the listing skips. The wheels change the path. They do not lift the load, and a winding or open stair is not a grip problem. This is how to use a stair climbing trolley on a straight, solid flight. Prices stay on the [stair cart comparison](/hub/workshop/stair-cart). What to buy is the [buying guide](/hub/workshop/stair-cart/sub/stair-cart-buying-guide). A weekly shop with no lift is the [flats page](/hub/workshop/stair-cart/sub/stair-cart-flats-without-a-lift). The wheels walk, and you still pull

A tri-wheel cluster is a star of three wheels. As you draw the truck towards you, one wheel stays on the tread while the next climbs the riser, so the load rolls instead of bumping on a single axle. PARRS, a UK sack-truck seller, describes the same motion: pull towards you on the way up so the star walks, and ease the truck down rather than letting it run. That description is a method, not a test of the Hoppa, the YEAUPE, or the YITAHOME in this set. Pushing or pulling a trolley is still manual handling.

Set the load before the first step

Put the heavy item low, against the plate or the bottom of the bag, and keep it below the handle. YEAUPE’s listing notes that the load should stay below handle height. The YITAHOME pages claim two elastic ropes, and one UK order arrived without them, so check the packet before you are on the stair. If a fastener is already loose, do not start the flight.

Up a straight flight, then down

Stand above the load when you go up, with both hands on the handle, and pull one step at a time. Pause if the cluster is not seated. Approved Document K gives an English private stair a rise up to 220 mm, a going of at least 220 mm, and pitch up to 42 degrees. Older stairs, and stairs in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, can differ. If the step is taller than the cluster can bridge, the walk becomes a drop. On a corner, do not expect the cluster to spin in place. Turn on the landing where all the wheels can sit, or lift the empty frame and carry the load by hand for that turn.

Stop on these stairs

Open risers are a stop. A UK forum thread on Blue Room reports a tri-wheel dropping through treads with no riser board. Fan-shaped winders and spirals are a stop for the same reason: the tread changes width and angle. You also stop when the landing is too short to turn, when the truck is wider than the stair, or when a wheel or strap is already damaged.

When a second person takes over

Get a second person, or do not use the cart, when the load is an appliance you cannot hold if a wheel slips. The second person does not ride the truck. They steady the load, watch the lower wheel, and take over if you need to reposition on the landing. KATSU at 16.8 kg and the YITAHOME pair at 11.2 kg fail that test for some reviewers.

Common questions

Do I pull or push on the way up?
Pull the truck towards you, standing above it, so the tri-wheel walks up the riser. Both hands stay on the handle. Pushing from below sends the load away from you, which is the opposite of the control PARRS describes. This is a method from trade sellers, not a measured test of one ASIN.
How do I come down?
Stay above the load and ease the cluster down, resisting the weight rather than letting it run. Pause on each tread until the wheels are seated. If you cannot hold the first two steps, split the load. A reviewed washing-machine move is not a template for a heavier appliance.
Where does the heavy item sit?
Low, against the plate or the bottom of the bag, and below handle height, which is the YEAUPE listing note. A high centre of gravity is what Sealey’s trade instructions warn against. Do not transfer Sealey’s 150 kg figure to these amazon.co.uk listings.
Can I use it on a spiral?
No. Winders and spirals narrow the tread and change the angle, so the cluster cannot sit square. Blue Room users report failure on fan-shaped steps. Use these manual trolleys only on a straight, solid flight with a landing wide enough to turn.
What if the stair has no riser board?
Do not use a tri-wheel cluster. Open treads can let a wheel drop through, which is the failure described in that UK forum thread. Carry the load, or use a stair that has a solid riser. Technique does not fill the gap.
When do I stop and get a second person?
When the load is an appliance, when you cannot hold the truck if a wheel slips, or when the landing is too short to turn alone. The second person steadies the load. They do not ride. Employees need a handling assessment, not a longer set of tips.
Should I pump pneumatic tyres first?
Yes, if the truck has air-filled tyres. A YITAHOME reviewer pumped them before 40 kg felt firm, and the valves were bent on arrival. Check ropes or straps in the same pass. A soft tyre or a missing strap is a reason to delay the flight, not a detail to fix halfway up.
