Diamond core drill buying guide

Updated: 2026-10-21

You already know the hole, and the amazon.co.uk titles in this set answer with a wattage. A 110 mm soil pipe through ordinary brick is a different machine from a 160 mm core in reinforced concrete. This diamond core drill buying guide is the order of checks: material, diameter, stand, clutch, then voltage, spindle thread and what is actually in the box. Prices sit on the [core drilling rig comparison](/hub/workshop/core-drilling-rig). The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings saved on 19 October 2026 and did not run a laboratory test. Start with the hole, not the wattage

Name the material before you name the motor. Ordinary brick and block can be a dry diamond bit with dust extraction on the tool. Concrete, engineering brick and hard stone are the wet case, and only if you can catch the slurry. If you cannot say what the wall is made of, or the element is structural, stop and get someone who can. CN8 is the UK control note for that split: water when you core concrete, extraction when you core brick dry, and a base that cannot walk. The bit has to be larger than the pipe or duct, not the same size. A UK trade explainer uses at least 127 mm for a 110 mm soil pipe. That figure is guidance from a trade page, not a British Standard. Sealey's DCD230V lists masonry at 18–160 mm and concrete at 18–130 mm. Langjiee B0D95CY4S3 claims 8 in / 20 cm and packs a 4.25 in bit, about 108 mm, which is short of the 127 mm guidance.

Stand, clutch and speed

Stand included is a yes only when the listing says so. Three pages do. Langjiee describes a stand-up machine. The Generic 3200 W kit, B0HJMF1W8G, includes a rig stand and sets 205 mm. The Generic 2200 W machine, B0HJYHNPPZ, adjusts to 22.83 in, about 580 mm. Two Generics at £195.99 put drill rig in the title and never say a column is packed. A shoulder rest is not a mast. A clutch is the next line. Langjiee states a clutch and an overload trip. The two £195.99 pages state a mechanical clutch. The 3200 W kit never mentions one. Large bits want a low speed. Langjiee prints 750 rpm. The 180 mm handhelds print up to 1600 rpm. The best diamond core drill rig page sorts the listings by that fit. It does not invent a test winner.

Voltage, thread and the box

None of the nine kept listings states 110 V or 230 V. A UK site outlet is not a domestic 13 A socket. Langjiee prints 12.4 A beside a wattage that the same page contradicts. Amps without a voltage do not tell you which plug you need. That check has its own page, 110V or 230V core drill. If the seller will not put the voltage in writing, you are not ready to pay. Langjiee states 1-1/4 in x 7 UNC and 5/8 in x 11 UNC. UK trade drills also use 1/2 in BSP. The Generic pages omit the arbor. An included bit can be smaller than the claimed capacity, as with the 4.25 in crown against the 8 in claim. The 3200 W kit includes bits and does not list their diameters. A wet/dry title is not two bits in the carton. Water, extraction and the bit type are on wet vs dry core drilling. Shelf prices on 19 October 2026 ran from £115.26 to £379.99.

What stays on the other pages

This page is the sequence, not a second product table. A sensible basket names the diameter, the material, a stand the bullets include, a clutch, a matching thread, and a supply you have. A lone wattage fails that list.

Common questions

Does the included bit match the maximum diameter?
Not on the listing that actually includes a sized bit. Langjiee claims 8 in / 20 cm and packs a 4.25 in crown, about 108 mm. The 3200 W kit includes a bit set and does not list the sizes. Several other pages do not mention a bit.
When is a handheld drill the wrong shape?
When the hole is large, deep, repeated, or in reinforced concrete. Eibenstock's UK guide keeps handheld diamond drills for smaller holes in brick and masonry, and a rig for the heavier work. In this set the 180 mm listings are shoulder drills with no column described. A shoulder rest will not stop a mast from walking, because there is no mast.
Why do masonry and concrete maximums differ on a trade drill?
Concrete, especially with steel in it, loads the barrel more than ordinary brick. Sealey prints 18–160 mm for masonry and 18–130 mm for concrete on the same 2300 W DCD230V motor. The amazon listings kept here usually give one diameter and a list of materials.
What thread do UK bits use?
Langjiee states 1-1/4 in x 7 UNC and 5/8 in x 11 UNC. Trade drills in the UK also use 1/2 in BSP. The other eight listings do not state an arbor. Match the crown to the spindle you have. An SDS adaptor is for small holes in a hammer drill, not for a large diamond barrel on a rig.
Which of these checks are on the voltage page instead?
Whether the drill is 110 V or 230 V, what a yellow site outlet expects, and why a 13 A socket is not a substitute. All nine kept listings omit the voltage, so this buying guide only tells you to notice the gap.
