Weed membrane vs drainage fleece

Updated: October 2026

You have two packets in the basket, both called a membrane, and one of them is the wrong fabric for the hole you have dug. A weed membrane blocks light under bark, slate, or gravel. Drainage fleece lets water through and holds soil back around a pipe, a French drain, or a soakaway crate. The ten garden rolls stay on the [weed membrane comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-membrane). Filtration products stay on the [drainage fleece comparison](/hub/weed-control/drainage-fleece). The Products Compared editorial team updated this page on 16 October 2026. We did not lab-test either fabric. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two jobs, two fabrics

The garden job is light. A black woven sheet on cleared soil, covered with mulch, keeps annual seedlings in the dark. Growtivation puts that woven sheet on weed suppression and puts non-woven felt on French drains and soakaway crates. White fabric, in that note, is a poor light block. The drain job is filtration: water has to move, and fine soil has to stay put, or the pipe silts up. Solid plastic and pond liner block water as well as light. Width and a stated gsm for a border stay on the weed membrane buying guide.

What these amazon rolls are

Every roll in this weed-membrane set is sold as a weed-control sheet, not as a filtration fleece moved across from the other comparison. The usual material, where the listing names it, is woven polypropylene. Only two print a gsm: Zuvo states 110 gsm on a 1 m × 10 m roll, and VOUNOT states 100 gsm on a 2 m × 10 m roll. Vivo Technologies states 8 oz and not a gsm. The other seven print no fabric weight. “Heavy duty” does not fill that cell, and a parcel weight divided by the area is not a gsm either. None of these listings show BS EN 13252. That British Standard covers characteristics of geotextiles used in drainage systems, including filtration, separation, and drainage. Separation is not specified on its own. The public BSI page does not list these amazon.co.uk rolls, and the standard is not a weed-sheet certificate. Do not read a CE mark, a UV line, or a French-drain sentence as that approval. Trade geotextiles that declare a standard are a specification buy from a merchant who will show the declaration. They are not hidden inside a garden roll that never mentions the number. We do not have a published pore size for these ASINs, so this page will not invent one. Fleece SKUs belong on the drainage-fleece comparison.

Lines that cause the mix-up

Three listing lines blur the fork, and none of them promotes a roll here into a drain wrap. Vivo Technologies’ 2 m × 50 m weed-control membrane mentions French drains. That sentence stays a listing claim. The roll stays in this weed-membrane set. It states 8 oz, not a gsm, it does not show BS EN 13252, and pegs are not included. A long allotment cover that also says “French drain” on the bullet is still a weed sheet until a drainage declaration says otherwise. Do not wrap a crate with it because the title borrowed the words. Zuvo’s listing contrasts the woven sheet with solid plastic. That contrast is useful, and it does not make the 110 gsm roll a soakaway fleece. The stated weight is the seller’s figure, and a UK review disputed it. A disputed garden gsm is still not a filtration specification. iropro’s bullets claim the 4 m sheet lets water through, and one UK review says rain did not pass. Permeability is not settled on that roll, which is a problem even for a path, and a worse reason to trust it around a pipe. If the hole you dug is a soakaway or a French drain, put these rolls back and open the drainage-fleece comparison.

Which page to open next

Open the weed-membrane comparison when the job is a border, a path, or a bed, and you are choosing among these ten rolls by width, a printed weight, pegs, and price. Open the drainage-fleece comparison when the job is letting water through while holding soil back. If you are unsure, describe the hole. Soil you want dark under gravel is a weed membrane. A perforated pipe in a trench, or a crate in a soakaway, is drainage fleece. A car standing on gravel is neither product on its own: that build needs a sub-base, which the gravel page separates from a 50 mm path cover. The recommendation is conditional, and it is simple. If you are covering cleared soil so annual weeds lose the light, buy a weed membrane and cover it. If you are wrapping a drain, buy a drainage fleece that is sold for that filtration job, and do not use these ASINs as a stand-in. Solid plastic is the third packet, for when you mean to stop water, not to filter it and not to mulch a bed.

Common questions

What is a weed membrane for, in one sentence?
A weed membrane is a light-blocking garden sheet, usually black woven polypropylene, that you lay on cleared soil and cover with bark, slate, or gravel so annual seedlings underneath struggle. It is not a promise to kill perennial roots, and it does not stop seed that later lands in the mulch. In this set it is the product on the weed-membrane comparison, not the fleece sold for drains.
What is drainage fleece for, in one sentence?
Drainage fleece is a filtration fabric, typically a non-woven felt, that lets water through and holds soil back around a French drain, a perforated pipe, or a soakaway crate. Growtivation puts that non-woven cloth on drains and crates, and the woven garden sheet on weed suppression. The two share a vague name and do not share a job.
Will a black woven sheet filter a French drain or a soakaway?
Do not use it as the filter. These rolls are sold as weed membrane, and none of them show BS EN 13252, the drainage-geotextile standard. A bullet that mentions French drains, including on the Vivo Technologies roll, is a listing claim, not that standard. BuildWiz’s warning matches the fork: DIY weed fabric is the wrong wrap for soakaway crates. Buy a fleece specified for filtration.
Will a white or felt fleece stop weeds by blocking light?
Poorly, if at all, compared with a black woven sheet. Growtivation notes that white fabric is a poor light block. Felt fleece is built to pass water and keep soil out of a drain, not to shade a border. You can weigh it down and still watch weeds in the gaps. For a path or a bed, use a weed membrane and cover it. For a drain, use the fleece and do not ask it to be a mulch.
Does BS EN 13252 approve any of these weed-membrane ASINs?
No. None of these listings show BS EN 13252. The standard is about geotextiles in drainage systems. It is not a weed-sheet certificate, and the public BSI page does not list these rolls. A UV line, a water claim, or the words heavy duty are not a substitute. If you need a declared drainage geotextile, buy one that shows the declaration, from a seller who will stand behind it.
Why does the Vivo listing mention French drains?
The amazon.co.uk listing claims drainage and mentions French drains. This comparison keeps the 2 m × 50 m roll as a weed-control membrane because that is how it is sold, not because the bullet passed a filtration test. It states 8 oz, not a gsm, and it does not show BS EN 13252. Use it as a long weed cover if that is the job. Do not wrap a crate with it on the strength of that sentence.
Is solid plastic the same as either product?
No. Solid plastic and pond liner block water as well as light. A weed membrane is there to block light, and these listings often claim water can still pass. Drainage fleece is there to filter. Plastic does neither job. It can be right for a pond and wrong under gravel that should drain, or around a pipe that should not sit in a sealed bag.
