How to lay weed membrane

Updated: October 2026

The roll is in the hall, the bed is still weedy, and you want the sheet down before the weekend rain. How to lay weed membrane is a sequence: clear the ground, overlap by a figure you can name, pin what the listing did not include, and cover the fabric before the sun works on the cut edge. Prices stay on the [weed membrane comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-membrane). Width and fabric weight sit on the [weed membrane buying guide](/hub/weed-control/weed-membrane/sub/weed-membrane-buying-guide). The Products Compared editorial team updated this page on 16 October 2026. We did not lay these rolls in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Clear the ground first

Take off the growth you can see, and take out the sharp things that will punch the sheet. Strim or hoe annual weeds, pull the crowns you can get, and rake stones, bramble stubs, and broken canes. Groundtex’s installer note, for that brand’s woven fabric, starts the same way: strim, and remove sharp stalks, before the sheet goes down. The sheet is for annual seedlings in a bed you have already cleared. Bindweed, couch, ground elder, and mare’s tail stay in the soil if you only covered the leaves. Do not use the roll as a way to dig out or move Japanese knotweed. GOV.UK says you must not cause invasive non-native plants to grow in the wild, and soil you move can be controlled waste.

Overlap, and name the source

There is no single UK overlap, so quote the source and do not blend the notes into one rule. For weed suppression, Groundtex and GravelMaster both say at least 100 mm. Hy-Tex suggests 150 mm on Covertex, which is that product’s figure. Zuvo’s own bullet says 10–15 cm, and that sentence belongs to Zuvo. GravelMaster’s 300 mm figure is for ground stabilisation under a sub-base, not for a flower bed. On a 1.8 m path made from two 1 m strips, a 100 mm overlap eats width you thought was spare. Buy a 2 m roll and avoid the join, or plan the cut with the overlap included.

Pins, then cover

VOUNOT includes 30 U-shaped pegs. KOETBURG includes 16 pegs and a pair of gloves. Zuvo says pegs are sold separately. Ram, Velway, ACCURATE, ANSIO, iropro, and Vivo Technologies do not name pegs. GravelMaster suggests a peg about every metre along edges and joins. If the parcel is fabric only, buy pins before you start, or weigh the sheet with mulch the same day. The RHS describes a mulch as at least 5 cm, and Groundtex’s note says at least 50 mm of cover. A UV line is not a service life. UK reviews mention fraying when a cut edge stays uncovered, so fold that edge under the overlap or cover it. Gravel depth is on weed membrane under gravel.

When to call a professional

Stop if cars will use the ground. A garden sheet is one layer, not a compacted sub-base. Stop if water will sit against a house wall, and stop on a steep bank where pins and mulch can slide. Stop if the plant is an invasive non-native that you might spread by digging. GOV.UK’s rule is about not causing those plants to grow in the wild. Offcuts are not automatically kerbside recycling. Norfolk County Council lists garden membranes with non-recyclable DIY waste at that council, which is one county’s list, not a UK-wide rule.

Common questions

How do you prepare the ground before the sheet goes down?
Clear live annual growth and anything sharp. Hoe or strim weeds, pull crowns you can reach, and rake out stones and woody stubs so they do not punch a hole. Groundtex’s installer note for its own fabric says to strim and remove sharp stalks first. The sheet then goes on cleared soil. It is the wrong first step if bindweed, couch, or mare’s tail are still growing, because covering the leaves does not remove the roots.
How much should you overlap a join, and whose figure is that?
For weed suppression, Groundtex says at least 100 mm and GravelMaster says at least 100 mm. Hy-Tex suggests 150 mm on Covertex, which is that sheet’s note. Zuvo’s listing says 10–15 cm, and that is Zuvo’s bullet. GravelMaster’s 300 mm figure is for ground stabilisation, not for a flower-bed join. Use one named figure for the job you are doing, and do not average them into a single rule.
Do you need to buy pegs separately?
Yes, unless the listing includes them or you will weigh the sheet with mulch the same day. In this set only VOUNOT (30 U-shaped pegs) and KOETBURG (16 pegs and gloves) include pins. Zuvo says pegs are sold separately. The other listings do not name pegs. GravelMaster’s laying note suggests a peg about every metre on edges and joins, which is that guide’s spacing, not a count printed on these rolls.
How soon should bark, gravel, or slate cover the sheet?
The same day if you can. The RHS describes a mulch as at least 5 cm, and Groundtex’s note says at least 50 mm of cover. A UV claim on a title is not a number of years, and these listings do not print a service life. UK reviews report frayed cut edges when the sheet is left in the sun. Cover, or fold the cut edge into the overlap, before you leave the bed.
Why do cut edges fray?
Woven tape unravels at a cut, and reviews on several of these brands mention hairy edges, especially if the sheet stays uncovered. That is a review theme, not a test we ran. Cut with scissors or a knife where the listing says you can, then fold the edge under a join or hide it under mulch. Leaving a raw edge in full sun is the mistake those reviews describe.
What if the bed still has bindweed, couch, or mare’s tail?
Deal with the perennial before you lay the sheet. Those plants store growth in roots and rhizomes, and a membrane over the top does not clear them. The RHS treats that as a different task from mulching annual seedlings. If the plant is an invasive non-native, do not dig and move contaminated soil as a tidy-up. GOV.UK says you must not cause those plants to grow in the wild.
When should you stop and call someone?
Call someone who builds drives if a car will park there, because the sheet is not a sub-base. Stop if water will sit against the house, if the bank is steep enough for the mulch to slide, or if you would spread an invasive plant by digging. GOV.UK says you must not cause those plants to grow in the wild. Those jobs sit outside a weekend border.
