Weed membrane buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are measuring a border about a metre wide, or a bed closer to two metres, and the roll has to match that shape before the price is worth comparing. This weed membrane buying guide is that spec: width first, then a fabric weight only when the listing prints one, then a check that you are buying a woven garden sheet. The ten amazon.co.uk rolls and the shelf prices sit on the [weed membrane comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-membrane). The Products Compared editorial team updated this page on 16 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Width and area

Start with the ground you can see. A 1 m roll is a long strip for a narrow border. A 2 m roll covers a typical bed or a path in one piece. The titles run from 10 m² up to 100 m². If the bed is wider than the roll, every extra strip is another join. A path 1.8 m wide and 8 m long shows the difference: two 1 m strips leave a join down the middle, while a 2 m roll covers that width once. The 4 m iropro cut is for a wider bed, and Vivo Technologies’ 2 m × 50 m roll is an allotment cover, not a better 5 m border. The best weed membrane page matches those sizes to a job.

Stated fabric weight

GSM means grams per square metre. Quote it only when the listing prints it. Zuvo states 110 gsm on a 1 m × 10 m woven polypropylene roll, and VOUNOT states 100 gsm on a 2 m × 10 m roll. Vivo Technologies states 8 oz and not a GSM, so do not convert ounces and call that the listing. The other seven rolls print no GSM. “Heavy duty” is not a weight, and dividing a 10 m² parcel of about 900 g by the area invents a number. A UK review on Zuvo disputed the 110 gsm claim, so treat it as the seller’s figure. ComparePebbles gsm bands and Hy-Tex’s Covertex example at 100 g/m² are not weights for these listings. None of them show a British Standard.

Woven sheet, not fleece

The retail default in this set is woven polypropylene tape, there to block light under bark, slate, or gravel. It can fray when you cut it. Non-woven drainage fleece is a felt meant to let water through while holding soil back around a drain or a soakaway crate. The word membrane appears on both packets. Solid plastic and pond liner block water as well as light, so they are the wrong cover on a bed that still needs rain. BS EN 13252 is the British Standard for geotextiles used in drainage systems. None of these listings show it. If the job is a French drain or a crate, read weed membrane vs drainage fleece. A stated GSM on Zuvo or VOUNOT does not turn those rolls into drain wrap.

Pegs, cover, and the weed you have

VOUNOT includes 30 U-shaped pegs and KOETBURG includes 16 pegs and a pair of gloves. Zuvo says pegs are sold separately. The other listings do not name pegs. A fabric-only roll is fine if you already have pins. Cover the sheet. The RHS describes a mulch as at least 5 cm deep, and supplier notes cluster around about 50 mm of bark, gravel, or slate. Neither figure is a service life. UK reviews report frayed cut edges when the sheet stays in the sun. These sheets are sold for annual seedlings in a bed you have already cleared. Bindweed, ground elder, mare’s tail, and couch are not finished by fabric laid over live crowns. A car drive is outside this buy: the sheet is one layer, not a sub-base.

Common questions

Should you buy a 1 m or a 2 m weed membrane?
Buy the width that covers the bed in as few joins as you can. A 1 m roll suits a narrow border, and a 2 m roll suits a bed or path around that width, so you are not laying two strips with a seam down the middle. A 4 m roll is for a wider span, and a 2 m × 50 m roll is a long cover, not a better short border. Measure the bed before you compare prices.
What does GSM mean on a weed membrane, and when is it missing?
GSM means grams per square metre. In this set only Zuvo prints 110 gsm and only VOUNOT prints 100 gsm. Vivo Technologies prints 8 oz and not a GSM. The other listings print no fabric weight. “Heavy duty” is not a GSM, and you should not divide the parcel weight by the area to invent one. If the number is not on the listing, the honest figure is not stated.
Is woven polypropylene the same as drainage fleece?
No. Woven polypropylene in this set is a light-blocking garden sheet. Drainage fleece is a non-woven felt for filtration, so water can pass while soil stays back. They share the word membrane on some packets and they do different jobs. Solid plastic blocks water as well as light, so it is neither. None of these weed-membrane listings show BS EN 13252, which is a drainage-geotextile standard, not a weed-sheet certificate.
Do you need pegs in the same order?
You need pins unless you will cover and weigh the sheet the same day. VOUNOT includes 30 pegs. KOETBURG includes 16 pegs and gloves. Zuvo says pegs are sold separately, and the other listings do not name pegs. Check the “in the box” line before you assume the parcel is a kit. A UV claim on the title is not a reason to leave the sheet unpinned in the sun.
Will a retail sheet stop bindweed, ground elder, mare’s tail, or couch?
Not as a method for those plants. The sheet is for annual seedlings in a bed you have already cleared. Perennial weeds with reserves in the roots keep coming if you lay fabric over live growth. The RHS treats that as cultural control, not as a mulch problem. Do not use a garden roll as a way to dig out or move Japanese knotweed. GOV.UK says you must not cause invasive non-native plants to grow in the wild.
Is “heavy duty” on the title a fabric weight?
No. It is wording on the title, not a measurement. The only weights you can quote from this set are Zuvo’s stated 110 gsm, VOUNOT’s stated 100 gsm, and Vivo’s stated 8 oz, which is not a GSM. Every other roll is not stated. Trade GSM bands from a gravel retailer are that retailer’s guide, not a hidden specification for these amazon.co.uk rolls.
