Half or full tree bench

Updated: October 2026

You are standing by a trunk that sits a metre from the fence, and the listing wants you to choose between a semicircle and a ring that closes behind the bark. A half or full tree bench is that layout choice, not a timber lecture and not a measuring lesson. Choose a half-round when you only need one side, or when the seat must sit against a fence. Choose a full ring only when the product in the box is a ring, or two halves sold together with a stated inner diameter. Buying a second one to make a circle is a second purchase. It is not a 360-degree frame that arrives today. The listings are on the [tree bench comparison](/hub/trees-and-palms/tree-bench). The Products Compared editorial team updated this in October 2026. We did not build a ring in a garden. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When a half-round is enough

A half-round covers one view. You sit facing the lawn, the trunk or the fence is at your back, and the far side of the tree stays open for a path, a border or a mower. That is the right shape when the trunk is hard against a boundary, when you only use one aspect of the garden, or when a full circle would block a gate. Garden Oasis describes a 150 cm teak half-round, the Brackenstyle pattern at £469.95, as suiting a wall or a fence, and it states trees up to 45 cm. The amazon.co.uk half-rounds in this set do not state a maximum trunk. They only say half-round. In this set those half-rounds are Yopappol B0F4XJC9B1 at £128.59, Gaommini B0GR99LTMS at £190, the natural generic B0H3KTKRBX at £175.33, the generic B0GXJ69QNQ at £150, and Hamankim B0GX1K83LY at £185.68. The curved generic B0HKSG3W1M at £357.99 does not say half or full, so do not file it as either. A half-round can also stand in the open against one side of a trunk with no fence at all. You can see a curve in the photograph and still not know whether your stem will foul the back rail. Measure first, using how to fit a tree bench, and treat any half-round without a printed maximum as unchecked.

When you need a closed ring

You need a closed ring when the point of the seat is to use every side of the trunk: a shady spot that moves through the afternoon, a meeting place in the middle of a lawn, or a tree that is the centre of the view rather than a fence post. In this amazon.co.uk set only Relaxdays B0H514B9N2 is a 360-degree ring. The inner opening is 70 cm, the outer diameter is 160 cm, the height is 85 cm, the weight is 19.2 kg, and the price is £195.90. It claims five seats. Assembly is required. If your trunk, plus growth, is wider than 70 cm, this ring is the wrong closed shape even though it is the only one here. A specialist full circle is often sold as two bolted halves that are still one product. Barlow Tyrie’s Glenham has an inner opening of 100 cm and is bolted on site. Jati’s 2.2 m circular seat is two sections that can also sit as an S. Corido’s teak circular bench is £1,615. The pair is what you pay for. The hole is printed. That is a different decision from buying one amazon.co.uk half-round and hoping a second listing will match the curve, the colour and the fixing holes. If you want a ring and 70 cm is enough, Relaxdays is the option in this set, with no review line and no named coating. If 70 cm is not enough, leave this set.

Two halves are a second purchase

Several of the wooden bullets say you can buy another piece and form a circle. The unit you are ordering, where a count is printed, is one. One half-round in the carton does not become a ring because the copy mentions a second. You would pay again, wait again, and then discover whether the two curves meet, whether the fixings align, and whether the two inner edges leave a hole you can calculate. Nothing on these pages prints that combined inner diameter. A specialist that sells two halves is describing the contents of the product you have already chosen, with one inner measurement for the finished circle. Chic Teak’s semi-circular teak bench is itself built as segments, and the same maker offers it against a wall, from about £965 on the captured page. That is still a designed half, not an invitation to improvise a second amazon.co.uk listing. Do not say the Yopappol, Gaommini or Hamankim boxes include two halves. They do not. If you did buy two, you would also double the footprint and the price, and you would still lack a stated hole. The curved listing that never says half or full is a worse candidate, because you do not know which shape the first box is, and its package line says 1 kg. What the page must print before you pay is the tree bench buying guide.

Footprint, not just the hole

The hole keeps the bark clear. The outer size decides whether the seat fits the bed. Relaxdays needs a circle 160 cm across, plus a little room to walk behind the sitter. A 150 cm wide specialist half-round, such as the Garden Oasis example, needs that width against the fence and a depth of roughly half a circle, not a full disc. A half-round therefore suits a narrow border where a 160 cm ring would cover the path. A ring suits an open lawn where 160 cm of steel is the feature, not an obstacle. Read the size lines before you plan that bed. The natural half-round prints 40 × 120 × 40 cm and a 120 cm diameter that is not labelled inner or outer, so a 120 cm width is the figure you can sketch, with the caveat that the page may mean something else. Gaommini and Hamankim print 125 × 65 × 10 cm. If 125 cm is the width and 65 cm is the depth, that is a shallow half, and the 10 cm height is still not a seat height you should trust. Yopappol’s 40 cm cube does not give you a footprint you can mark on the grass. Quarter-circle seats exist, including a Chic Teak corner bench, for a trunk in an internal angle of two walls. None of these listings uses that label, so do not assume a half-round will tuck into a corner as a quarter.

Common questions

When is a half-round the right shape?
When you want one side of a trunk, or a seat against a fence or wall, and you do not need to sit behind the tree. The half-rounds in this set are the wood listings named above. They do not print a maximum trunk diameter, unlike a specialist half-round that may say 45 cm, so the shape can be right and the fit still unknown.
When do I need a full ring?
When the seat has to work all the way round and the lawn can take the outer circle. In this set that product is Relaxdays, 70 cm inside and 160 cm outside, at £195.90. A trunk wider than 70 cm, including growth, needs a different ring from another shop, not a second look at the half-rounds.
If I buy two half-rounds, do they become one bench?
Only if you make them into one, at your own risk, after a second purchase. The bullet that says buy two does not put two halves in the first box. Specialist full circles that arrive as two bolted sections are sold as that pair, with one inner diameter. These amazon.co.uk rows do not print the combined hole.
Does a 160 cm outer ring fit a small bed?
Often it does not. A 160 cm circle is the Relaxdays footprint before you add space to walk around it. A half-round about 120 to 150 cm wide uses a border against a fence and leaves the other side of the trunk clear. Mark the circle on the grass before you order the ring.
Can a half-round go against a fence with no tree?
Yes. Specialist copy, including the Garden Oasis 150 cm teak half-round, sells that use against a wall or fence. You still need a stable base and a size line you believe. You do not need an inner opening if there is no trunk, though the listing should not pretend there is a tree hole it never measured.
What is a quarter-circle for?
A trunk or a corner where two walls meet, so you only want a slice of a circle. Chic Teak sells that as its own corner seat. None of the seven listings in this set is labelled a quarter-circle, and a half-round is twice that plan.
Why do specialist full circles arrive as two halves?
So the sections can be carried in and bolted around a trunk that is already standing. Glenham and the Jati 2.2 m seat are sold that way, with the pair as the product. That is not the same as an amazon.co.uk half-round whose page suggests you might order another later.
