Tree bench buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a tree seat on amazon.co.uk, the price sits in the £129 to £196 band, and the page still has not told you whether the trunk will pass through the middle. This tree bench buying guide is the checklist for that moment. A tree bench, sometimes called a tree seat or a tree surround, is seating shaped around a trunk, or a half-round set against one side of a trunk or a fence. The seven listings and their prices are on the [tree bench comparison](/hub/trees-and-palms/tree-bench). If the inner opening is missing, or the size line cannot be a seat, do not treat the load bullet as proof that the bench will fit. The Products Compared editorial team updated this in October 2026 from listing fields. We did not assemble these benches, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The number that decides fit

The number that matters is the inner opening: the clear hole the trunk must pass through, printed as a diameter. Outer width is the footprint on the lawn. Parcel size is the carton. Those three figures are not interchangeable. Only Relaxdays B0H514B9N2, at £195.90, prints an inner opening in this set: 70 cm inside a 160 cm outer circle, with a height of 85 cm. Every other listing here leaves the hole blank. The English Garden’s method is to measure the trunk at about 90 cm above the ground and divide the circumference by 3.14. Chic Teak asks you to use the widest point, often the base, and divide by about 3.143. Keep the larger diameter, then leave room for growth. There is no single UK legal gap in centimetres. A specialist half-round often states a maximum trunk of about 45 to 50 cm and starts near £445. These amazon.co.uk half-rounds, from the Yopappol at £128.59 to the Gaommini at £190, do not print that maximum. If the page is blank, use the measuring steps on how to fit a tree bench before you order.

Load claims and EN 581

A bullet that says 250 kg, 500 lb or 600 kg is a seller line. It is not, on these pages, a test report. EN 581-2 bases its tests on users up to 110 kg. It does not cover street furniture, and it does not cover weather ageing. BS EN 581-1 asks for accessible edges to be rounded or protected. None of the seven listings shows that a lab has run those tests, so a large kilogram figure does not upgrade a vague size line. Read the load next to the seat count, not instead of it. Yopappol prints 250 kg and three seats on a page whose size line is 40 × 40 × 40 cm. Relaxdays prints 600 kg total and 120 kg per seat across five claimed seats, which is more specific, and it is still not an EN 581 certificate. The natural half-round at £175.33 prints 500 lb and does not print a seat count. General Product Safety Regulations 2005 still require a product to be safe in foreseeable use. That duty sits with the seller. It does not turn a marketing load into a number you can quote as tested.

Size lines that disagree with the title

Yopappol B0F4XJC9B1 prints 40 × 40 × 40 cm, an item weight of 10 kg, three seats and a price of £128.59. One amazon.co.uk review scores it 2.0 out of 5 and mentions poor quality and fit. That is a thin sample, and it is the only star line in the set. Gaommini B0GR99LTMS at £190 and Hamankim B0GX1K83LY at £185.68 both print 125 × 65 × 10 cm and 10 kg. A width of 125 cm could be a half-round. A height of 10 cm is not a normal seat height. The generic half-round B0GXJ69QNQ at £150 prints no dimensions and no weight, and its image URL matches the Yopappol page. The curved listing B0HKSG3W1M at £357.99 is the sharpest conflict. The package line prints 8 × 8 × 8 cm and 1 kg, while the bullets claim solid wood and a 250 kg load. The product URL is B0HKSG3W1M, and the same file prints ASIN B0HKSFZ9NP. Do not read the highest price as a larger bench. The shape is not labelled half or full.

Assembly ticks and timber words

Several wooden listings say assembly is not required and then tell you to drive screws. Yopappol’s field says no assembly, and the bullet says to screw into pre-drilled holes. Gaommini’s field says the same, while the bullet allows 15 to 20 minutes with hardware. Hamankim’s field says assembly is not required, and the bullet says you can assemble it in minutes without professional tools. The generic B0GXJ69QNQ bullet mentions screws and has no assembly field to compare. Only Relaxdays states that assembly is required. None of the six wood listings names a species. Painted, varnished, water-based paint, or a UV coating is a finish claim, not teak and not eucalyptus. The RHS says those named oily hardwoods can stay outside with a yearly wash. None of the seven listings prints an FSC code. If you need a named hardwood, that contrast sits on wood or metal tree bench.

If the parts do not match the page

When the carton arrives and the parts are not what the title described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the UK route. Goods must be of satisfactory quality and as described. You have 30 days to reject a fault. After that, the trader must repair or replace. After six months, you have to show the fault was there on delivery. Which? sets out that 30-day and six-month pattern against section 23 of the Act. A 1 kg package sold as a bench, or a 40 cm cube sold as a three-seat tree seat, is an as-described problem if that is what you receive. Do not screw the bench into the bark, and do not pile soil against the trunk to hide a short leg, while you decide whether to keep it. If you need a paved pad or a brick plinth in the root zone, if you would cut roots thicker than about 25 mm, or if the tree is protected, stop. A straight garden bench, a hall tree or an arbour is the wrong product when the title merely contains the word tree.

Common questions

Which number is the hole for the trunk?
The hole is the inner opening, a clear diameter the trunk must pass through. Outer width is how much lawn the seat covers, and a parcel line is the carton. In this amazon.co.uk set only Relaxdays prints that hole, at 70 cm inside a 160 cm circle. If the page never uses the words inner, opening or trunk diameter, you do not have the number yet.
What if the listing never states an inner diameter?
Leave it, or measure your trunk first and only buy a page that prints a larger opening. The English Garden and Chic Teak both turn circumference into diameter by dividing by about 3.14, using the wider of a chest-height reading and the base. A missing hole cannot be checked against that sum, however attractive the slats look.
Is 250 kg or 600 kg an EN 581 result?
Not on these listings. EN 581-2 bases strength tests on users up to 110 kg and leaves weather ageing out of scope. A seller line of 250 kg, 500 lb or 600 kg is not that test unless a report is shown. None of these seven pages shows one, so the kilogram bullet does not prove the bench.
Why do some size lines say 10 cm high or 1 kg?
Because the captured amazon.co.uk fields say so, and those fields disagree with a bench title. Gaommini and Hamankim print 125 × 65 × 10 cm. Yopappol prints a 40 cm cube. B0HKSG3W1M prints 8 × 8 × 8 cm and 1 kg at £357.99. Treat each clash as a reason to pause, not as a secret bargain.
Does assembly not required mean it arrives built?
Not where the same listing tells you to screw into pre-drilled holes. That contradiction appears on the Yopappol, Gaommini and Hamankim rows. Relaxdays is the listing that says assembly is required and leaves the point unambiguous. Read the bullet and the assembly field together before you assume a finished seat.
Is solid wood teak?
No. Teak is a named species. These wood listings say solid wood, paint, varnish or a UV coating, and they leave the species blank. The RHS care path for teak and eucalyptus does not transfer to an unnamed board. None of the pages prints an FSC code either.
When is a straight garden bench the wrong product?
When you need seating around a living trunk, or a half-round against that trunk or a fence. A straight bench, a hall stand or an arbour can share the word tree in a title and still have no inner opening. If the shape line is not half-round or a 360-degree ring, it is not this product.
