Die grinder vs angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to buy one rotating cutter and you are not sure whether the job is a 125 mm disc or a 6 mm burr. A die grinder holds a shank in a collet. An angle grinder holds a large disc behind a guard. amazon.co.uk files several die-grinder kits under Angle Grinders, which is how the mix-up starts. This page uses the eight listings in our [die grinder comparison](/hub/tools/die-grinder) as the collet side of that split. Peter F. wrote it on 21 October 2026. Collet size and air are on the [buying guide](/hub/tools/die-grinder/sub/die-grinder-buying-guide).

Two tools, two accessories

A UK angle grinder is usually a 115 mm or 125 mm disc tool, on 230 V with a BS 1363 plug, or an 18 V version of the same idea. The guard is part of that tool. Straight pencils here, such as the WORKPRO at 25,000 rpm or the Sealey at 22,000 rpm, grip 3 mm or 6 mm. The YEARTOP grips 1/4 inch, which is 6.35 mm. Cromwell's notes say you do not drill with one. There is no 125 mm guard because there is no 125 mm disc. BS EN IEC 62841-2-3 covers disc grinders and does not apply here. Electric die grinders sit under BS EN IEC 62841-2-23, and air die grinders under BS EN ISO 11148-9.

Jobs that settle the choice

A rusted bolt proud of a flange is an angle-grinder job: thin cutting disc, guard, two hands. A 6 mm burr only nibbles a small pin. If the fastener is structural, stop. A wide weld on flat plate is an angle-grinder job too. Use a die grinder in a tube, on a port, or in a corner the guard cannot enter. The straight Sealey or WORKPRO is that shape. UK Sealey reviews still say a small compressor runs out of air if you lean on the cut. Rust in a wheel arch is where a 125 mm disc can catch. A 90-degree head with a 2 inch disc can sit in the seam, which is why the Anesty kit includes twenty discs and both collets. A port is die-grinder work only. With no compressor, see air versus cordless.

The 2 inch 90-degree kits are not 125 mm grinders

The QWORK at £25.99 is a 90-degree air tool at 12,000 rpm with four 2 inch discs and 6 CFM at 6 bar, at 3.6 from 63, with leak reports. It is not a weld-face grinder and not a 20,000 rpm burr pencil. The Anesty kit at £35.90 lists both collets and twenty 2 inch discs at a claimed 20,000 rpm, 4.6 from 290. Air use is not printed. A 2 inch pad does not retire a 125 mm disc. If this week's abrasive is a 115 mm or 125 mm disc, buy an angle grinder and use the guard. If it is a shank, buy a die grinder. Isolation before a bit change is on how to use a die grinder.

Which family to buy this week

If every abrasive you will fit is a 115 mm or 125 mm disc, buy an angle grinder. If every abrasive is a shanked burr, a stone, a drum or a 2 inch disc, buy a die grinder and match the collet. If the same afternoon has a flat weld and a port, buy both.

Common questions

Can a die grinder cut a bolt?
It can nibble a small pin with a rated cutting wheel or a burr, slowly, if the accessory’s speed covers the tool. It is the wrong choice for cutting a bolt or a stud the way a 115 mm slitting disc does. Use an angle grinder with a guard and a cutting disc for that job. A die grinder is also not a drill, so do not put a twist drill in the collet to cut a fastener out by drilling it.
Which tool should I use on a 125 mm weld face?
Use a 115 mm or 125 mm angle grinder with a grinding disc. A die-grinder burr will track and overheat a wide bead, and a 2 inch pad on the QWORK or the Anesty is for blending a small area, not for clearing a plate weld. Move to a die grinder only when the bead turns into a corner or a port the disc guard cannot reach.
Which tool should I use in a port or a die cavity?
Use a die grinder with a shank that matches the collet, usually 6 mm on the straight air pencils in this set, or 1/4 inch on the YEARTOP. An angle grinder’s disc is too large to enter. Keep the burr at speed with a light feed. If the air tool stalls, you are short of free air or you are pushing too hard, not short of disc diameter.
Is a 90-degree air sander an angle grinder?
No. The QWORK and the Anesty are 90-degree air tools with 2 inch discs. An angle grinder in UK shops is the 115 mm or 125 mm disc tool with a guard. The bent head is why the search results mix them, and why amazon.co.uk ranks some of these kits under Angle Grinders. A 2 inch pad does not take a 125 mm disc, and it does not include that guard.
Do I need both tools?
You need both if the same project has a flat weld or a cut-off and also a cavity, a port or an arch seam. You need only the angle grinder if every abrasive you will fit is a 115 mm or 125 mm disc. You need only the die grinder if every abrasive is a shanked burr, a stone, a drum or a 2 inch disc. Buying one body and hoping the collet will accept a large disc is how the shank, the nut or the disc fails.
Which tool needs more protective equipment?
Both need eye protection and hearing protection, and both throw sparks you have to aim away from fuel, glass and looms. The angle grinder adds a guard and a larger disc that can kick, which is why the work must be clamped. The die grinder adds a collet that can release a shank at 20,000 rpm if it was fitted badly, and the cheap air versions in this set are described as extremely noisy without a printed decibel figure. Neither tool is the lighter option for skipping protection.
