Die grinder buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a die grinder on amazon.co.uk because a weld, a port or rust in a wheel arch will not come off with a 125 mm disc. This die grinder buying guide is the checklist before one of the eight listings in our [die grinder comparison](/hub/tools/die-grinder) goes in the basket. You should know whether you need a straight pencil or a 90-degree head, whether 6 mm is the collet you own, and whether the compressor or a battery is the limit. Peter F. read the 21 October 2026 captures. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Named rows are on the [best die grinder UK](/hub/tools/die-grinder/sub/die-grinder-best) page.

Collet and head first

A die grinder grips a shank: 3 mm, 6 mm or 1/4 inch. A 1/4 inch shank is 6.35 mm, so it will not seat in a 6 mm collet, and a 6 mm burr rattles in a 1/4 inch collet. The YEARTOP states a 1/4 inch collet. Marked 6 mm burrs make that kit the wrong grip. A straight body such as the WORKPRO WG803 or the Sealey SA671 points the burr into a port. A 90-degree head such as the Anesty or the QWORK lays the spindle across a face or an arch. Anesty lists both collets and twenty 2 inch discs. The QWORK is 12,000 rpm with four 2 inch discs, not a 25,000 rpm burr pencil. If the title prints both sizes, confirm the collet that arrives.

Air, battery or neither

Six of the eight rows are air tools, from the Yosoo kit at £16.69 to the Anesty kit at £35.90. They need free air at about 90 psi, about 6 bar. Tank litres are not that figure. UK reviews of the ORAZIO kit and the Sealey describe a 50 litre tank that dies once the burr touches steel. Only WORKPRO and QWORK print consumption. WORKPRO states 85.5 L/min at 90 psi. QWORK prints 6 CFM at 6 bar. The others leave it unstated. The power split is the air versus cordless die grinder page.

Speed, kits and review counts

The LengSuaa at £39.99 has no battery. The title names DeWalt and the bullets name Makita. The YEARTOP at £59.99 includes two 12 V packs and a UK charger. A 5.0 from two reviews is too small a durability record. Burr pencils here run from about 20,000 to 26,000 rpm. The QWORK at 12,000 rpm is for 2 inch discs. Match the accessory speed to the tool. A 115 mm disc is the die grinder versus angle grinder choice. A 4.4 from 254 is a thicker file than 4.3 from 32. Hearing protection is the default under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

What to match before the price

If the shank in the drawer is 6 mm, buy a 6 mm collet and leave a 1/4 inch kit. If the job is a port or a cavity, buy a straight pencil. If it is a face or an arch, buy a 90-degree head. If you only know the tank size, you do not yet know whether the tool will keep spinning. Price is the last sort.

Common questions

Do I need a straight or a 90-degree die grinder?
Choose a straight body when the burr has to enter a hole, a port or a cavity in line with your wrist. Choose a 90-degree head when you are dressing a face, a flange or the inside of an arch. In this set the WORKPRO and the Sealey are straight air pencils, and the Anesty and the QWORK are 90-degree air tools. The QWORK is limited to about 12,000 rpm and 2 inch discs, so it is the wrong 90-degree tool for a carbide burr.
Is 6 mm the same as 1/4 inch?
No. A 1/4 inch shank is 6.35 mm, so it is larger than a 6 mm collet. The YEARTOP listing states a 1/4 inch collet and the UK reviews used 1/4 inch drums. The WORKPRO and Anesty bullets list 3 mm and 6 mm collets, while their titles also print 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch as the names sellers attach to those sizes. Check the collet that arrives before you force a shank.
Why does my die grinder stall when I load it?
On an air tool the usual cause in these reviews is free air, not the gauge reading. UK buyers of the Sealey and the ORAZIO kit describe a 50 litre tank that reaches pressure and then dies once the burr is on the metal. The WORKPRO page prints 85.5 L/min at 90 psi. The other air rows in this folder do not print a consumption figure, so you cannot assume they use the same air. Pushing harder only loads a tool that is already short of air.
What speed suits a carbide burr?
The burr pencils in this comparison are listed between 20,000 and 26,000 rpm. The QWORK at 12,000 rpm is sold with 2 inch sand discs, so that speed is for those discs, not for a carbide pencil. Keep the accessory’s rated speed at or above the tool’s free speed. A mounted stone from a £17 kit is a short-life extra, not a rated burr, which is why ORAZIO reviewers replace the stones that come in the case.
Should I buy air or cordless first?
Buy air if you already have a compressor that holds pressure while the tool is cutting, and start with a listing that prints air use if you can. The WORKPRO is the row here that states 85.5 L/min. Buy the YEARTOP 12 V kit only if you have no compressor and you accept that two reviews are not a durability record. Leave the LengSuaa until the mount matches either the DeWalt pattern in the title or the Makita pattern in the bullets. The capture includes no battery.
Does a safety lock-off matter on a die grinder?
Yes, if the listing actually has one. A die grinder reaches full speed as soon as you press the lever, and a lock-off is what stops that happening in a bag or against your leg. Sealey states a safety catch, WORKPRO a lock-off, Yosoo a safety trigger and Anesty a safety lever switch. Where the table says the lock is not stated, do not assume the tool has one because a neighbour’s air tool did.
