DeWalt angle grinder battery life

Updated: October 2026

The carton says DeWalt, the grinder will not spin, and the only pack on the bench is the 2.0 Ah from the drill. DeWalt angle grinder battery life, for the three cordless listings here, starts from one fact: the DCG406N-XJ, DCG407N-XJ and DCG404N-XJ are tool-only bodies. UK reviews treat 4 Ah and 5 Ah as the size that cuts, and they set 2.0 Ah aside. The [DeWalt angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/de-walt-angle-grinder) has the shelf prices from the amazon.co.uk listings of 19 October 2026. There is no measured minute figure for these ASINs. The box does not include a battery

On these listings, N and “tool only” mean the grinder body. The DCG407 row says no battery. The DCG404 page says batteries are required and are not included, and it lists a side handle, guards and a hex wrench. UK reviews call the DCG406 a bare unit without a TSTAK. £131.90, £107.50 or £188.05 is not a kit price. A drill pack fits when it is the same 18 V XR slide system. That does not make these bodies FlexVolt grinders. A 2.0 Ah pack will click on and then disappoint you on more than a short cut. Disc size and switch sit on the DeWalt angle grinder buying guide.

What UK buyers on these listings reported

On the DCG406, reviewers say a 2.0 Ah pack is flat in minutes and tell you to use 4 Ah or 5 Ah. One review also says the motor cut out after overheating, so a short run can be heat as well as capacity. On the DCG407, one buyer needed two charges to strip a garden table, using a 4 Ah pack and two 5 Ah packs. That is one table, not a formula. On the DCG404, one reviewer reported about 10 minutes from a genuine pack during professional cutting, then went back to a mains grinder, and still called the body comfortable for small DIY. Do not average those reports into a spec. A retailer line of 20–40 minutes with no method stays out of this answer.

Claims that belong to a different model

The “69 cuts through 1/2 inch rebar per 5.0 Ah charge” line is a claim for the DCG405P2 kit, repeated by Data Power Tools. It is cuts, not minutes, and the model is not the DCG406, the DCG407 or the DCG404. DeWalt’s Powerstack film uses a DCG405 and shows a 5 Ah pouch pack completing more cuts than a 5 Ah cylindrical pack because it ran cooler. There is no minute count, and that grinder is not one of these ASINs. A registered pack has a three-year guarantee. The rule the reviews support is genuine 18 V XR, 4 Ah or 5 Ah, and a second pack if the work is more than odd cuts. That is a rule of thumb, not a minute value.

When a battery is the wrong tool

HSE’s vibration guidance treats time on the tool as exposure time, so two 5 Ah packs also mean more time on the tool. One DCG404 reviewer left a bare 18 V body for a mains grinder on continuous cutting. Beside a 230 V socket, with 115 mm discs, the DWE4036 at £59.99 never asks for an Ah figure. Keep the cordless body when you already own 4 Ah or 5 Ah XR packs and the lead is the problem. As a rule of thumb, own two of those packs if the grinder is for more than the odd cut. The voltage split is on the cordless or corded DeWalt angle grinder page. Which switch you want is on the best DeWalt angle grinder page.

Common questions

Will the batteries from my DeWalt drill fit?
They fit when they are the same 18 V XR slide packs. A DCG407 review says the grinder ran on batteries the buyer already used in a drill. A 2.0 Ah pack will click on and then go flat if you cut in earnest. These three titles are not FlexVolt grinders.
Is a 2.0 Ah pack enough?
For a brief cut, it may start the job. DCG406 reviews say a 2.0 Ah pack is flat in minutes and point you to 4 Ah or 5 Ah. That line is review language, not a timed test. Leave the 2.0 Ah pack on the drill if the work is more than a short bolt.
How many 5 Ah packs do I need?
As a rule of thumb, two 4 Ah or 5 Ah packs if the grinder is for more than odd cuts. One DCG404 reviewer had two genuine packs flat in under 20 minutes of professional cutting. One DCG407 job needed two charges to strip a table. Those are single reports, not a Saturday guarantee.
Does the 69-cut claim apply to the DCG406?
No. The 69 cuts in 1/2 inch rebar, per 5.0 Ah charge, is a DeWalt claim repeated for the DCG405P2 kit. It counts cuts, not minutes, and it does not transfer to the DCG406, the DCG407 or the DCG404.
Is Powerstack worth it for a grinder?
Consider it when you already value the pouch pack. DeWalt says it runs cooler under load, and a registered battery has a three-year guarantee. The film that showed more rebar cuts used a DCG405, not these ASINs, and it did not publish minutes.
Why did my new grinder feel flat so fast?
Check the amp-hour figure on the pack first. A new N-code body with a 2.0 Ah pack matches the DCG406 reviews that describe that pack going flat in minutes. One DCG406 buyer also said the motor cut out after overheating. Let it cool before you decide the tool is faulty.
Should I just buy the corded model instead?
Buy the DWE4036 when the work stays next to a 230 V socket and 115 mm discs are enough. At £59.99 it removes the Ah question. Keep a bare 18 V body when you need 125 mm or you need to leave the lead, and you can fit 4 Ah or 5 Ah packs. It will not run your 125 mm discs.
