M14 angle grinder spindle thread: what UK grinders actually use

Updated: October 2026

You are holding a quick release nut that says M14, and the amazon.co.uk table also mentions “#0-80”, “M14 x 1.25”, or a left-hand thread you have never seen stamped on a UK grinder. Those lines are not a second standard you should shop for. An M14 angle grinder spindle thread on machines sold for the UK and Europe is M14×2.0, with a 22 mm disc bore. A US grinder is often 5/8"-11, and the nuts do not interchange. This page is how to identify the spindle you have, and when to send the nut back unfitted. It does not rank the twelve clamps. Scores and prices are on the [angle grinder quick release nut comparison](/hub/tools/angle-grinder-quick-release-nut). We did not measure your spindle. Identify the spindle on the machine

Start with the grinder, not the nut title. Unplug it or remove the battery. Take off the outer nut and the disc so you can see the spindle and the rating plate. Bosch Professional’s UK module gives the EU metric spindle as M14×2.0 and the disc bore as 22 mm, and the US spindle as 5/8"-11. Imported tools turn up on the same bench as a grinder bought here, so the plate matters more than the shop. A correct M14 nut starts by hand and runs on for several turns without rocking. If it bites immediately, cocks to one side, or stops hard after one turn, you are on the wrong thread or on a damaged one. Do not save it with pliers. Cross-threading an M14 spindle is a repair, not a tight clamp. Metabo’s quick flange nut M14 asks for at least 8 mm of free thread. Shorter than that, the nut bottoms in the spindle before the shoulder touches the disc, and the wheel can slip even though the nut feels tight. A plate that reads 5/8"-11 is a different shopping list. The fitting sequence, once the thread matches, is on how to fit a quick release nut.

Ignore the junk values in Amazon tables

Several listings in this comparison copy a template into the thread field. You will see “#0-80”, which is a tiny machine-screw size, and “M14 x 1.25”, which is a finer pitch than the M14×2.0 Bosch states for EU metric grinders. You may also see a left-hand or right-hand line that does not match the tool in your hands. Treat those cells as empty. They are not a reason to buy a special nut, and they are not evidence that your UK grinder is an odd pitch. The useful fields are the ones a maker actually publishes, and most generic packs do not publish them. Milwaukee’s small FIXTEC, article 4932352473, is described by UK trade listings for M14 spindles on grinders up to 150 mm. SabreCut states diameters and thicknesses for GRNSCB and GRNSCA, not a fantasy pitch. A title that says M14 on a cheap two-pack still has to pass the hand-start test. Wording that leans on Milwaukee in a generic title does not convert that nut into the FIXTEC article or into a 5/8" nut. If the only thread information is a template cell, confirm M14×2.0 on the grinder and return the nut if it will not start cleanly. The buying guide puts that check first, ahead of stars.

UK grinders and the machines people import

A grinder from a brand’s UK range is usually the metric spindle, including the 115 mm and 125 mm tools people already own. It is not every machine in the country. A grinder imported from the US, or a disc kit sold for American tools, is often 5/8"-11. The hex across the flats can look close in a photo. The pitch is not close enough to force. UK mains and a BS 1363 plug tell you about the electrical lead on a corded tool. They do not tell you the spindle. Cordless tools have no plug to hint either way. Read the plate. Diameter is the second UK mismatch. The nuts in this set are aimed at small grinders. The Milwaukee article in the table is specified up to 150 mm and is excluded from brake and quick-stop machines. A 230 mm grinder, even with a genuine M14×2.0 spindle, is outside that article. The universal FIXTEC for 115–230 mm, stated for rapid braking, is a different product and is not one of the twelve rows. Bosch X-LOCK is a third mismatch: the disc clicks on, and there is no M14 clamp nut to upgrade. That comparison is on quick release nut versus X-LOCK. If your plate says M14×2.0 and the grinder is 115 mm or 125 mm without a brake, you are in the set these nuts were listed for.

What to do once the thread is confirmed

When the nut starts cleanly on M14×2.0 and the free thread can clamp your disc, use the comparison for a stated size and a review file you can weigh. The small FIXTEC has pin holes and a large review file, and it remains the wrong part for a braked or 230 mm machine. The slim SabreCut, stated 8.9 mm, suits flaps more than paper-thin cutters. The tall one, stated 13.5 mm, is for deep flaps, and reviewers say it often will not close on a 1 mm disc. A two-pack such as Jesiah is a spare after this check, not a substitute for those dimensions. Stars on a tiny file do not turn a 5/8"-11 spindle into M14. Matching the thread is the minimum, not a safety test. At work, people who mount wheels still need training under PUWER regulation 9. At home, isolate the power, keep the guard, and hand-tighten only. If you still cannot tell M14×2.0 from 5/8"-11, have a competent person identify the plate before you buy another nut.

Common questions

Is the M14 angle grinder spindle thread the same on every UK tool?
On metric grinders sold for the UK, Bosch Professional’s notes give M14×2.0 and a 22 mm bore. That is the usual 115 mm or 125 mm machine. US-market grinders commonly use 5/8"-11. A 230 mm grinder can be M14 and still sit outside the small nuts here. Read the plate.
Why does Amazon say #0-80 or M14 x 1.25?
Those cells are template errors in this set, not the UK spindle. “M14 x 1.25” is a finer pitch than the M14×2.0 Bosch states for EU metric grinders. Ignore the cell, read the stamp, and check that the nut starts by hand.
Will an M14 nut fit a 5/8 inch spindle if I tighten it hard?
No. The pitches do not match, and force cross-threads the spindle. A nut that will not start cleanly by hand is the wrong nut or a damaged one. Stop and read the plate. Pliers will not convert one standard into the other.
Does M14×2.0 mean the nut fits a 230 mm grinder?
Only the thread matches. Article 4932352473 is described up to 150 mm and is excluded from quick-stop machines. The universal FIXTEC for 115–230 mm and rapid braking is a different product. A correct pitch on a large braked grinder is still the wrong nut.
How much spindle thread do I need?
Metabo asks for at least 8 mm of free thread so its M14 quick nut can clamp rather than bottom out. If the stub is shorter once the flange and disc are on, no nut in this set will grip properly. That limit is on the grinder.
I have confirmed M14×2.0. Which nut should I open next?
Also check grinder size, any brake, and whether you use thin cutters or thick flaps. Daily changes on a small unbraked grinder point at the FIXTEC with pin holes. Occasional DIY points at a checked two-pack such as Jesiah. X-LOCK owners should not buy an M14 nut.
