M14 quick release flange nut: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You have a 115 mm or 125 mm angle grinder and the next job needs a cutting disc instead of a flap. An M14 quick release flange nut replaces only the outer clamp, so you can undo the disc by hand. It does not replace the inner flange or the guard, and it is not a lab-tested safety upgrade. Check the spindle, any brake, then nut thickness against the discs you use. Star ratings come after that. The twelve amazon.co.uk rows are on the [angle grinder quick release nut comparison](/hub/tools/angle-grinder-quick-release-nut). Prices were captured on 19 October 2026. Check the spindle thread first

Most grinders sold for the UK use an M14×2.0 spindle and a 22 mm disc bore. Bosch Professional’s UK notes state that size, and they record the US spindle as 5/8"-11. If the nut rocks or stops after a turn, stop. Forcing it with pliers marks the spindle. Amazon tables in this set show junk lines such as “#0-80” and “M14 x 1.25”. Ignore those cells. Read the stamp on the grinder, then confirm the nut starts by hand for several clean turns. Metabo’s M14 quick flange nut asks for at least 8 mm of free thread beyond the inner flange. If the stub is shorter, the nut bottoms out before it clamps the disc. How to read the stamp is on the M14 angle grinder spindle thread page.

Match grinder size and any brake

A title that says universal is not a measurement. Milwaukee article 4932352473 is the small nut: UK trade listings describe it for M14 spindles on grinders up to 150 mm, at about 8 mm thick, and Milwaukee excludes it from brake and quick-stop machines. The universal FIXTEC for 115–230 mm grinders and rapid braking is a different article. It is not this ASIN. Where a listing states no brake line, treat a quick-stop grinder as unmatched. At work, PUWER 1998 regulation 9 requires adequate training for people who mount abrasive wheels. That duty does not apply to purely domestic use. The burst risk still does. Keep the guard. Do not grind with a cutting wheel. The fitting sequence is on how to fit a quick release nut.

Nut thickness versus the disc you actually use

Slim and tall change which abrasives clamp. SabreCut states GRNSCB at 45 mm across and 8.9 mm thick, and GRNSCA at 46 mm and 13.5 mm. A slim nut leaves more of a flap disc usable. Reviewers say 8.9 mm can still be too thick for a 1 mm cutting disc. The taller nut is for a deep flap or a stripper, and that extra height often will not close on a 1 mm cutter or sit inside a diamond cup. Unbranded packs often omit thickness. Trial the disc you own: the shoulder must meet it, and the nut must not hit the guard. Hand-tighten only. Pliers are how cheap nuts seize.

When the comparison table is the next step

Open the main comparison once thread, diameter, brake and disc type are known. A perfect star line on a tiny file is not a durability record. Use a stated size when you change discs daily and want pin holes. Use a two-pack when you already trust the spindle and can reject a bad thread. A photo of a spanner is not proof that both flanges are replaced. Bosch X-LOCK is a click mount with no M14 nut.

Common questions

Will this M14 quick release flange nut fit my grinder?
It fits if the spindle is M14×2.0, the nut starts by hand, and enough free thread remains to clamp the disc. Bosch Professional’s UK notes give EU metric grinders as M14×2.0 with a 22 mm bore. A 5/8"-11 spindle will not take it. Ignore Amazon cells such as “#0-80” or “M14 x 1.25” and read the stamp on the machine.
Can I use a quick release nut on a quick-stop model?
Only if that nut’s maker says so. Milwaukee excludes article 4932352473 from brake and quick-stop grinders. The universal FIXTEC for 115–230 mm tools is a different product and is not in this comparison. Where a listing states no brake line, treat a quick-stop grinder as unmatched.
Which nut suits thin cutting discs?
You still have to trial the disc. SabreCut states the GRNSCB at 8.9 mm and the taller GRNSCA at 13.5 mm, and reviewers say the tall nut often will not clamp a 1 mm cutter. Most sub-£8 packs publish no thickness, so stars cannot answer this. The shoulder must meet the disc without hitting the guard.
Should I buy the Milwaukee FIXTEC or a £6 two-pack?
Buy the small FIXTEC at about £13.79 for a 115 mm or 125 mm M14 grinder without a brake, when you want pin holes and 2,229 ratings. Buy Jesiah’s about £6.29 two-pack as a spare pair you will check on arrival. The pack states no thickness and no brake line, so it is a poor stand-in if you needed those figures.
Do I still need a pin spanner?
Yes. Hand-tightening is the normal method, and rotation finishes the clamp. Heat or a cheap thread still beats fingers. The small FIXTEC has pin holes for that moment. Many generic listings do not mention holes, so keep the original spanner in the case.
What if the nut seizes after a hot cut?
Let the grinder cool, isolate the power, and use a pin spanner if the nut has holes. Do not reach for pliers first. If the spindle or inner flange is damaged, the guard is missing, or a disc has come off, stop and get a competent person.
