How to use a 125mm angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

The first time you fit a disc to a new 125 mm grinder, the useful question is not how fast you can finish the cut. It is whether the guard locks, whether the disc matches the spindle, and whether the switch actually kills the motor. This is how to use a 125mm angle grinder for a first session at home, from public safety notes and from faults already described in this amazon.co.uk set on 20 October 2026. We did not film a lab demo. Prices stay on the [125 mm variable speed angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/125mm-variable-speed-angle-grinder). Fit the guard and the side handle first

Fit the guard before the disc. FEPA says the guard stays on. It should cover the part of the disc that is not doing the work, and throw sparks away from you and away from the cable. If it will not seat, stop. Do not hold it with a finger and run the disc. NANWEI reviews include a guard that would not locate or that blocked the disc. That is a return, not a technique. A POSENPRO review that takes the guard off for a dust shroud is not permission to grind with the wheel open. Fit the side handle so your second hand stays on the tool. Whether the title even agrees it is 125 mm is on the buying guide.

Mount a disc that matches the grinder

Unplug a corded tool, or take the battery off, before you change the disc. The usual bore is 22.23 mm. M14 is the spindle thread, not the hole. Use the spanner that came with the grinder, and do not add a longer bar. If the listing never stated M14, check the nut before you force anything. A cutting disc is for the edge. FEPA says you do not grind on the face of a cutting wheel and you do not twist it in the cut. The grinder's maximum must not be higher than the mark on the disc. Many 125 mm wheels are marked around 12,200 rpm or 80 m/s. If the disc has no speed mark, do not fit it. Let the tool run up clear of the work. A disc that vibrates, which Kistrba reviews mention, comes off again.

How to stand and cut

Hold the tool with both hands and bring the disc to speed before it touches the metal. Extra pressure is how kickback starts. If the disc pinches, release the trigger and wait until it has stopped. Clamp the work. Use impact-rated eye protection, not sunglasses. A mask for a short cut in mild steel is not the control for concrete. HSE sheet CN1 treats concrete grinding dust as a silica job that needs extraction and respiratory protection with an assigned protection factor of at least 20 where that sheet applies. If you do not have that, do not start. The dial number is on what speed to use.

Stop if the tool does not behave

The session is over if the guard will not lock or the switch will not kill the motor. TEENO, TOPWAY and POSENPRO review text describes a switch that stays on or starts by itself. Unplug the lead or pull the battery. Do not finish the cut. A Kistrba review says the paddle can start the tool in a bag, so fit the battery only at the bench. TOPWAY's small review set includes a report that the gear head separated from the housing. One report is not a rate, and it is enough to stop. A hot smell or sparks from the motor vents are the same kind of stop.

When a lower speed is not the fix

A lower number on the dial does not repair a guard that will not lock or a switch that will not kill the motor. If the supply is a UK construction site, a 230 V lead from this set is the wrong default.

Common questions

Which way does the guard face?
Point the open side of the guard at the work, and point the closed side so sparks and fragments go away from your body and away from the cable. If you cannot see that path, turn the guard to the next locking position the manual allows. If it will not lock in any safe position, do not run the disc.
How do I know the disc matches M14 and the bore?
M14 is the spindle thread. The usual disc hole is 22.23 mm. The nut must turn on the spindle without force, and the disc must sit flat between the flanges. If either part is wrong, stop and buy the matching disc rather than enlarging the hole.
May I grind on the face of a cutting disc?
No. A cutting disc is used on its edge. Grinding on the face, or twisting it in a cut, is a listed FEPA do not. Change to a grinding disc or a flap disc that is marked for that work and for at least the grinder's maximum speed.
What if the switch will not turn the tool off?
Unplug the cord, or remove the battery, and do not put the tool down until it cannot start. Review text in this set already describes switches that stay on or start by themselves. That tool is finished for the day and should go back, not through one more cut.
Do I need a mask for one metal cut, and for concrete?
Impact eye protection applies to both. A short cut in mild steel is not the concrete-dust job in HSE's CN1 sheet. Concrete grinding needs extraction and proper respiratory protection. If you do not have that, do not start the concrete.
