Pegboard or drill rack: which belongs on your wall?

Updated: October 2026

Choose a pegboard or a drill rack by looking at the objects on your bench. A pegboard is a flexible grid for many small hand tools. A drill rack is a shaped support for cordless drill bodies, usually with shelves above. Both can appear under “tool wall” on amazon.co.uk, and they are not interchangeable. This guide compares the two formats using the INCLY metal panels and the drill racks in the [tools wall comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/tools-wall). You should finish knowing which layout suits your tools, what the wall rules out, and when both formats on one wall beat a single universal system. We did not measure a working load. They are not substitutes

A pegboard stores tools on a hole grid. Hooks hold pliers or a tape, bins take fixings, and you can rearrange the panel when the kit changes. A drill rack starts from a different job: several bulky power tools need the same cradle, with the body above the slot and the battery below. Shelves may take cases or chargers. An empty hook is not automatically a safe drill holder. Tools vary in balance and battery size. A general hook may let the body rotate. A narrow slot may refuse a broad handle. Measure the tools before you buy. Rakes and spades are a third problem. Use the tool wall buying guide if the collection goes beyond hand tools and drills.

Choose a pegboard for varied hand tools

Pegboard works when you want each small tool visible and you expect to move it. Screwdrivers can sit in a holder, pliers can hang from paired hooks, and bins can keep plugs near the hand tools. INCLY uses four metal panels with a title size of 48 by 24 inches. The £64.99 kit includes hooks, bins and mounting hardware, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 440 reviews. One UK reviewer says the bins do not fit securely. The accessory count conflicts: 158 pieces in the title, 154 accessories in the bullets, and 100 hooks in a specification. Check the current pack list. Hook systems differ. UK hardboard may use 5 mm holes at 25 mm centres. KAS sells accessories for 25 mm metal pegboard, not as universal hooks. Match spacing, diameter and thickness before you order extras. Hooks also need space behind the face. INCLY says solid wood, brick or concrete, and not drywall.

Choose a drill rack for cordless tools

A drill rack is the simpler answer when several cordless drills occupy a bench. The £13.99 Yeabett is one 39 cm rail with four curved slots at 4.5 cm. It is the best value drill rack in the comparison. UK feedback says it can look smaller than expected, may bend when full, and has side hooks that hold little. The stated 25 kg has no published test method. The 4.4 from 718 reviews also appears on the three-layer Yeabett. BILIONE adds three levels for drills, grinders and wrenches at £24.49. The wide KAFAHOM costs £69.95, with 13 slots, three shelves and 25 hooks, at about 123.5 cm. UK reviewers report poor picture instructions, a build of more than an hour and, in one case, sharp weld wire and too few screws. Buy the scale that matches the collection. The best tool wall guide compares those use cases.

One wall can use both

Place a drill rack beside the bench so power tools go back one-handed, and use pegboard at eye level for the hand tools. Keep clearance under the slots for batteries. Follow the work sequence rather than filling every centimetre. A combined layout needs more fixing points. Identify brick, concrete, timber or plasterboard first. The INCLY drywall restriction still applies beside a drill rack fixed to studs. Do not add the headline load figures together. On a stud wall you may need a batten into structural timber. On masonry, plugs must match the substrate and the holes. The tool wall mounting guide covers the sequence. If space is tight, fit the format that clears the worse clutter first.

Common questions

When is a pegboard the better buy?
Choose it when you own many small hand tools, want each one visible, and expect to rearrange the layout. It is particularly useful for pliers, screwdrivers, measuring tools and light accessories. Check the wall restriction and the hook compatibility before you treat the supplied kit as something you can expand with any spare hook.
When is a drill rack the better buy?
Choose a rack when cordless drill bodies and drivers are the main clutter. Shaped slots give a predictable resting place, and shelves can hold cases and batteries. Measure handles and batteries, then buy only enough positions for the collection and realistic near-term growth.
Can I hang drills on pegboard hooks?
Only with an accessory specified to support that tool’s shape and weight. A generic straight hook may let a drill rotate or project too far from the panel. A purpose-made cradle, or a drill rack, usually gives a clearer and repeatable support for several cordless tools.
Will spare hooks fit the INCLY board?
Do not assume so. Pegboards vary in hole diameter, spacing, thickness and retaining method. Confirm INCLY’s current dimensions and accessory specification, then match any third-party hook to those details. A hook described for 25 mm metal pegboard is not necessarily universal.
What if I need both formats?
Create separate zones: a rack for drill bodies and a pegboard for hand tools. Plan the full loaded wall before you drill, keep the retrieval paths clear, and verify each product’s wall requirements. Combining the formats does not let you combine or average their stated load figures.
Which is safer on plasterboard?
Neither format is automatically safe because it is light when empty. INCLY specifically says not drywall. A drill rack may be possible when it is fixed to suitable structural support, but the product, the fixings and the wall all have to be assessed for the intended load.
