Smart TRV boiler control

Updated: October 2026

The spare room is finally cool, and the boiler is still firing, or the room you boosted is still cold. You fitted smart heads and expected them to run the heating. This page is about smart TRV boiler control: what can ask a UK boiler to start or stop, and what a radiator head can do on its own. A closed pin only stops that radiator. The boiler runs when the control it listens to still asks for heat. Fitting steps stay on [how to fit a smart radiator valve](/hub/thermostats/smart-radiator-valve/sub/smart-radiator-valve-how-to-fit). The seven cartons are on the [smart radiator valve comparison](/hub/thermostats/smart-radiator-valve). Products Compared did not instrument a boiler. What still tells the boiler to run

On a typical UK system the boiler follows a room thermostat, a receiver, or a programmer, sometimes with a timer in the same box. A boiler that keeps running after every smart TRV has closed is still obeying that control, unless the heads are actually integrated with it. Shutting seven pins does not send a stop message by itself. The same limit applies in the other direction. A cold spare room will not start the boiler until something the boiler listens to calls for heat. That something might be a Hive thermostat, a tado receiver you buy separately, or the wall stat you already had. None of the amazon.co.uk boxes in this set includes a boiler receiver. The buying guide counts that missing box in the price. Do not read an OpenTherm or on/off claim into a head that never states one.

What each product in this set can do

Hive documents Heat on Demand. A Hive radiator valve can boost a Hive thermostat so the boiler runs for that room. Hive’s support page says the boost will not run when the thermostat is off, on holiday, already heating, or outside the limits Hive documents. Reviews in this set also say the boost heats other radiators on that zone which have no smart head, and one buyer saw the request in the app while the receiver did not fire. The about £55.30 head does not contain the receiver. The tado X starter is two heads plus Bridge X at about £207.15. There is no boiler receiver in the included-components line. A tado community reply says a tado radiator head will not ask a Hive controller for heat, and that a tado thermostat would be the part that talks to the boiler. AI Assist on the tado listing is a schedule and window plan, not a receiver. KE100, the KE100 three-pack, SONOFF TRVZB, and both WILAWELS heads have no boiler-link field to quote. One KE100 reviewer used Google Home routines to ask a separate heating system to turn on, which is that household’s routine, not a claim printed as boiler control. Do not read OpenTherm, weather compensation, or load compensation into those listings. If the listing is silent, the honest line is that the link is not stated.

Manual valves and an open path

Heat on Demand, when it works, asks the boiler to heat the zone. Radiators on that zone that still have manual valves, or ordinary TRVs left open, will heat as well. Hive reviews describe exactly that: a boost for one room also warms the radiators that have no smart head. If you only converted the spare rooms, the living room can still dump heat whenever any smart head calls. Some circuits need a permanently open path so the pump is not dead-headed. Closing every radiator, smart or manual, can fight that. Leave one path open when the circuit design needs it. A heat pump with a minimum-flow design is a question for the installer, not a toggle in these head apps.

This is not Boiler Plus by itself

Boiler Plus, for a gas combi installed in an existing English home, requires one additional measure: flue-gas heat recovery, weather compensation, load compensation, or a smart control with both automation and optimisation. BEIS defines that smart-control option as automation and optimisation, not as a phone app alone, and not as a radiator head. Buying Hive, tado X, KE100, SONOFF, or WILAWELS from this set does not complete Boiler Plus. How that rule sits with smart controls is on Boiler Plus and smart controls. When a boiler is replaced, BEAMA’s reading of Part L is thermostatic room controls in each room, often a room thermostat in one room and TRVs elsewhere. The room that holds the thermostat should not rely on a TRV as its only control, or the two controls fight. The dates in that note are 15 June 2022 in England and 23 November 2022 in Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not given those dates here.

Common questions

Will smart radiator valves turn my boiler off?
They turn the radiator off. The boiler stops when its thermostat, receiver, or programmer stops asking for heat. If that control still calls, the boiler can run while every smart head is shut. Integrating the heads with the control the boiler already obeys is what changes that. A head-only carton does not do it.
Can they turn the boiler on?
Only when a documented link exists and its conditions are met. In this set, that link is Hive Heat on Demand with a Hive thermostat. The tado X starter has no receiver in the box. KE100, SONOFF, and WILAWELS do not state a boiler call. A Google Home routine a reviewer built is not the same as a receiver in the carton. If you need the boiler to start from one room, budget the control that the boiler already listens to.
What is Hive Heat on Demand, and when will it refuse?
Heat on Demand lets a Hive radiator valve ask a Hive thermostat to boost the heating. Hive’s support page says it will not do that when the thermostat is off, on holiday, already heating, or outside the limits Hive documents. Reviews add two practical limits: other radiators on the zone can heat as well, and the app can show a request while the receiver stays quiet. The valve head at about £55.30 does not include that receiver.
Does the tado X starter kit include the part that fires the boiler?
It includes two heads, a Bridge X, adapter sets, and mains adapters. It does not include a boiler receiver. The bridge gets the heads onto Matter over Thread. It does not, on this listing, replace the receiver. Geofencing and open window sit on the paid AI Assist plan, which is still not a boiler relay. If the house is V3+, the X kit is the wrong generation as well.
Can I mix tado heads with a Hive thermostat?
A tado community reply says a tado radiator head will not ask a Hive controller for heat. The part that would talk to the boiler, in that reply, is a tado thermostat. Treat a mixed set as two systems that happen to share a house. The Hive hub will not run the tado head, and the tado Bridge X will not run the Hive head. Pick one call-for-heat path.
What happens to radiators that still have manual valves?
They follow the zone. When any control calls for heat, an open manual valve lets that radiator heat. Hive’s Heat on Demand reviews describe spare radiators warming during a single-room boost. Close or fit those radiators if you want the boost to stay in one room, and keep a permanently open path if the circuit design requires one. A wheelhead is not converted by fitting a smart head on top.
