How to fit an Oventrop TRV head

Updated: October 2026

Replacing a thermostatic head is one of the few heating jobs many UK homeowners attempt without calling a contractor, provided the valve body is sound and you are not opening live boiler wiring. You have already matched an Oventrop SKU to your thread or clamp type using the [Oventrop thermostat buying guide](/hub/thermostats/oventrop-thermostat/sub/oventrop-thermostat-buying-guide) or the [Oventrop thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/oventrop-thermostat). This page walks through a head-only swap on a wet radiator circuit. It does not teach Unibox RTL plumbing or a full system drain-down.

Stay on the head side of the valve

A TRV head senses room air and pushes a pin against the valve body to modulate flow. The tail, olive, and pipework on the other side of the body are where leaks and drain-downs live. This guide assumes you are unscrewing or unclamping a control cap, not removing the whole valve from the wall. If the tail is weeping, the pin is seized solid, or you need a multi-storey drain, stop. Book a Gas Safe registered heating engineer for anything that affects the boiler or its controls. Gather an adjustable spanner or the correct socket, a cloth, and a small container in case a few drops appear at the pin. Read the leaflet that arrives with the head. Oventrop scales differ slightly between Uni L, Uni LH, and clamp models.

Heating off, then the old head and the pin

Switch the heating off at the programmer or app and wait until the radiator is cold to the touch. A hot panel risks scalding and makes the pin harder to judge. In a shared block, this guide does not cover a communal drain.

Set the old head to maximum and remove it

Open the existing dial to its highest setting so the pin is fully extended before you release the head. On M30 threaded heads, unscrew anticlockwise while supporting the valve body so you do not twist the tail. On clamp heads such as Uni XD or Uni LV, release the clamp, often a retaining ring, without levering against the pipe. If the head will not move, do not crack the body. Penetrating oil and patience are acceptable. Hammer blows on the tail are not.

Check the pin and the interface

With the head off, the central pin should move in and out when you press it gently, then spring back. A stiff or stuck pin means the body needs service. A new Oventrop cap will not fix hydraulics downstream. Confirm the interface matches the order: a visible M30 thread, or Danfoss RA or Vaillant clamp lands. Wipe debris from the seat. On a threaded body, look for crushed threads or an old adapter stack.

Fit the Oventrop head and test the heat

Seat the new head only after the pin moves and the interface matches the ASIN you ordered.

Screw-on heads and clamp heads

For M30 x 1.5 or M30 x 1.0 heads such as Uni LH, Uni XH, or Uni L, hand-start the head squarely and tighten firmly without cross-threading. Stop when the head sits upright and the scale reads sensibly. Overtightening can crack a plastic cap. For a clamp head, engage the clamp fully on the RA or Vaillant pattern. A half-clamped head can leak or hunt temperature. Align the scale so that 3, or 20 °C, is readable from the doorway. Note whether your model has a zero position. Uni LH zero and several other listings mark zero on the cap.

Lockshield, then a heat test

If you only replaced like for like and did not touch the lockshield at the other end, leave balancing alone unless the room never heats. If you closed the lockshield, reopen it to its previous mark. Turn the heating on and set the new head to a mid-scale setting. The radiator should warm without hammering or constant flow noise. If the head clicks and the panel stays cold, the pin may not be contacting, the clamp may be loose, or the body may be blocked. Do not keep forcing the dial. Where the model has zero, use it in summer and check that this radiator stays off while others on the circuit still work.

Mistakes that waste a Saturday, and when to stop

Buying M30 x 1.5 for a 1.0 body, or the reverse, is the most common error. The threads look similar in photos. Fitting Uni LH on Danfoss RA, without Uni XD, is the second. Trusting Amazon smart-home metadata instead of the valve in your hand has sent buyers the wrong product class. Using a Unibox RTL kit where only a head was needed adds cost and hydraulic risk. Those boxes are a different product, set out on Oventrop Unibox RTL. Ignoring a weeping tail because the head was cheap often ends with a ceiling stain. Stop if the pin will not move, the tail leaks with the head off, you smell gas, or you need to alter pipework, pump wiring, or boiler interlocks. Gas Safe registration matters for boiler-adjacent work, not for every head swap, but doubt about which side of the valve you are opening is a professional trigger. Flats on shared heating mains, and systems with inhibitors you do not want spilled, also belong with a heating engineer.

When the swap is finished

If the pin springs back, the interface matched the head, and a mid-scale test warms the panel without noise, a like-for-like swap can stop there. If the room stays cold, or the tail weeps once the head is off, book a heating engineer rather than forcing the dial. A faulty pin or tail is body and pipework work, not another turn of the cap.

Common questions

Can I swap the head without draining the whole system?
Often yes, on a single radiator with a healthy body. The pin should spring back when you press it, and the tail should stay dry with the head off. A multi-storey drain, a seized tail, or a shared riser needs professional isolation. This page does not cover a communal drain-down.
Do I need PTFE tape on M30 threads?
Follow the leaflet supplied with the head. Many TRV heads seal on the face and thread combination supplied. Do not add tape unless the manufacturer allows it. Hand-start the head squarely and stop when it sits upright. Overtightening can crack a plastic cap.
What does zero do after fitting?
On heads with zero on the scale, it shuts flow at that radiator for summer, or while you move furniture, without killing the whole circuit. Uni LH zero and several other listings in this batch mark zero on the cap. After a mid-scale heat test, return to zero in summer and check that this radiator stays off while others still heat.
Is fitting Uni LV the same as Uni LH?
The room steps are similar: heating off, old head to maximum, a pin check, then a heat test. The interface is a Vaillant clamp, not an M30 thread. Confirm the clamp is included on the live listing before the visit. A question on that point stayed unanswered in the October 2026 scrape.
Will a new head save a fixed percentage on gas bills?
This research does not quote bill savings. A working TRV helps room control, but a percentage needs a measured study, and there is not one here. Do not treat a new dial as a quoted cut in gas use.
Can I fit Oventrop on any brand of radiator?
Only where the body matches the head interface named on the ASIN. Connection types are listed on the main comparison. Uni LH zero names many radiator brands on its listing text. A Danfoss RA or Vaillant clamp body needs the matching clamp head, not a generic M30 cap.
Should I replace the body at the same time?
If the pin or the tail is faulty, a head alone is not enough. That is body and pipework work, not this guide. A seized pin, or a tail that weeps with the head off, is the point to stop and book a heating engineer.
