Oventrop thermostat buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing at a radiator with a cracked dial, or a head that no longer grips the pin, and amazon.co.uk mixes screw-on caps, clamp adapters, and heavy boxes labelled RTL. Before anything goes in the basket, name the interface on the valve body. Oventrop sells more than one family, and the [Oventrop thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/oventrop-thermostat) ranks the listings once that interface is clear. This Oventrop thermostat buying guide stays on the criteria, not on a second full table. Figures are October 2026 shelf prices in GBP. This is not a lab test.

What an Oventrop thermostat is here

Most listings are thermostatic radiator valve heads. You unscrew or clamp a control onto an existing wet valve body, set a temperature on the scale, and a liquid sensor modulates flow. They are not mains room stats, smart hubs, or boiler programmers. The other group is Unibox kit: a return-temperature limiter, or a TRV plus RTL package. That belongs in an installer quote, not a quick bedroom refresh. Heads in this comparison cover M30 x 1.5, the rarer M30 x 1.0, Danfoss RA and Vaillant clamps, and an anthracite Uni LH. Unibox RTL Vario and Unibox plus are about £80.75 and about £130.75, and both weigh over a kilogram. A white Uni LH is about 45 g. If you only need a new cap on one radiator, stay with a head until an engineer specifies RTL.

How to identify the valve interface

A threaded body takes a head that screws on. M30 x 1.5 is the pitch on the Uni LH and Uni XH listings. M30 x 1.0 is the Uni L, and it will not seat on a 1.5 body even when the caps look alike. Read the marking on the old head, or compare the thread with a known sample, before you treat every box as interchangeable. A clamp body hides the interface in a branded insert. Danfoss RA needs a clamp head such as the Uni XD, not an M30 head forced onto the tail. Vaillant clamps need the Uni LV. Photograph where the head meets the valve, note any logo cast into the metal, and match that to the connection on the listing rather than to the cheapest white cap. A long radiator-brand list, as on the white Uni LH page, is useful. It still does not replace a check on your own valve.

Features that matter on a UK wet system

A zero setting shuts that radiator at the head for summer, or while you move furniture, without shutting the rest of the circuit. Several listings show a 0 on the cap beside a 7–28 °C band. Frost protection on the Uni L bullets is for a room that may sit cold on setback. It is not system antifreeze, and it is not boiler protection where your installer specifies that. The Uni L memo disc caps how high the dial will go, which helps in a rented or shared home. Anthracite Uni LH costs roughly twice the white zero head, for the colour, and that listing does not state a zero setting. Review lines vary sharply: 4.8 from nine UK reviews on one head, and no star line on another. When fit is uncertain, lean toward the listing that has UK reviews. Ignore battery, ZigBee, or mains fields on a clearly mechanical head unless the live bullets confirm them.

Match the listing to the body

With the family known, read the connection type. M30 x 1.5, a zero mark, and the strongest UK review file point to the white Uni LH at about £11.75. The lowest listed M30 x 1.5 price is the Uni XH at about £11.00, with no UK reviews on that listing. M30 x 1.0 needs the Uni L. Danfoss RA needs the Uni XD at about £11.25. Vaillant needs the Uni LV, at a higher price and a weaker star line. A house with mixed brands is set out in M30 heads vs Danfoss RA and Vaillant. Do not order two different heads just in case. When the listing is chosen, how to fit an Oventrop TRV head covers isolation and the pin.

Fazit: name the interface, then the head

If the body is M30 x 1.5 and you want UK reviews on the listing, the white Uni LH is the top pick. If that pitch is already proven and you want the lowest listed screw-on price, the Uni XH is best value, with no reviews on that page. A 1.0 pitch, a Danfoss RA clamp, or a Vaillant clamp is a different head. Return-temperature work is a Unibox, not a new dial.

Common questions

Which Oventrop fits my radiator thread?
Match M30 x 1.5, M30 x 1.0, a Danfoss RA clamp, or a Vaillant clamp to the body you already have. The comparison lists the connection on each listing. The white Uni LH carries the longest M30 x 1.5 radiator-brand list in this set. The pitches look similar in a photo, and a 1.0 head will not seal on a 1.5 body.
Do I need the Uni XD for Danfoss?
Yes, if the body uses a Danfoss RA insert or clamp pattern. An M30 screw-on head will not engage that insert correctly. The Uni XD is the Danfoss RA clamp head here, at about £11.25, and the listing has no UK reviews. Identify the RA pattern on the metal before you order it.
Is the Uni LH the same as the Uni XH?
Both listings show M30 x 1.5, and the Uni XH page states a 7–28 °C range with a zero setting. Manufacturer sheets quote different hysteresis values for the XH and LH series. This page uses the amazon.co.uk fields only. The white Uni LH has nine UK reviews. The Uni XH listing had no review line.
Can I swap a head without draining the system?
Often yes, on a single radiator, if the body is not leaking and the pin moves freely. A seized body, a weeping tail, or a flat that shares a drain-down needs a heating engineer. Changing pipework at the boiler, or controls that alter boiler interlocks, is not a head swap.
Are these heads EN 215 approved?
Several listings cite EN 215, including the white Uni LH and the Uni L. That marks thermostatic radiator valve testing to the standard named on the page. It is not an independent UK lab test by Products Compared, and it does not prove a DIY swap meets your system design.
Why are the review counts so low?
Oventrop TRV heads are trade-familiar parts, so amazon.co.uk review text is sparse next to consumer gadgets. When the fit is borderline, prefer a listing that has some UK stars, and still confirm the thread on the valve. Nine reviews is a real file here, and it is still a small sample for every radiator brand.
