How to set up a round frame pool

Updated: October 2026

The box is on the lawn and the afternoon looks long enough, which is how a round frame pool ends up on a slope. This is how to set up a round frame pool, and the same ground rules cover an Easy Set if that is what you bought. You need a flat patch that can carry the water, a staged fill, and a waterline that is even all the way round. If the water sits deeper on one side, you drain and re-level. You do not drag the pool a metre to sort it. The [round pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-round) is where the sizes and the box lists live. This page does not rank them. Pick ground that can carry the water

Bestway's UK ground guide asks for flat ground, no stones, and access to water and power. A fall you can see with a water bottle is enough to put the full weight on one seam once the pool is up. One litre is about a kilogram. The 10 ft Steel Pro Max lists 4,678 litres, about 4.7 tonnes. The 100 cm set lists 9,150 litres at 90 percent, about 9.2 tonnes. The Steel Pro manual says do not site the pool on a deck, a driveway, gravel, or asphalt, and do not use sand to fake a level. Which diameter and wall you should have bought is on the buying guide.

Build the frame, or inflate only the ring

Lay the parts out and check them against the sheet before you click anything. Missing feet, a short pole, or a liner that does not match the frame show up in reviews. The catalogue line sometimes says assembly is not required. Reviewers still describe building a frame. For a steel frame, the usual order in Bestway's assembly guide is to join the rails and uprights, hang the liner, and only then add water. Do not drag the liner across the garden. An Easy Set is a different build. On the 6 ft 28101NP and the 8 ft 28106EH you inflate the top ring and then fill with water. There are no poles. The ring is the structure. If it is soft, the wall is soft. The frame versus Easy Set page is the buying choice. Once the carton is open, you are only assembling the one you have.

Fill a little, smooth the liner, then fill to the stated line

Put in a few centimetres of water and push the wrinkles out from the centre. Bestway's assembly guide uses that shallow fill so the floor can settle before the weight locks a crease in place. If the floor will not lie flat, the ground is not flat. Empty what you have added and fix the patch. Do not keep filling and hope the weight irons it out. Then fill towards the line the manual states. For the Steel Pro, that is about 90 percent, not over the top of the wall. Watch the waterline as the level rises. It should sit the same distance below the rail all the way round.

Stop if the pool leans or the socket is wrong

If the water is deeper on one side, drain and re-level. Do not slide a filled pool, even by a metre. The manual is explicit that you do not move the pool with water in it. RoSPA's garden note is that small pools should be emptied after use because rain refills them. The RLSS UK line is an adult within arm's reach while anyone is in the water. If the only level surface is a deck, a driveway, gravel, or asphalt, follow the manual and do not fill. If the pump plug is not BS 1363, or you cannot see an RCD, do not improvise with a travel adaptor. Reviews on one Bestway 10 ft listing describe an American-style plug. Call an electrician when the outdoor supply is the unclear part.

Common questions

How flat does the ground need to be?
Flat enough that a few centimetres of water do not run to one side, and that the full waterline sits level under the rail. If you can already see a fall, fix it before the frame goes up.
Can I level it with sand?
No. The Steel Pro manual says sand must not be used to fake a level. Sand washes and compacts, and the waterline tilts after you have filled. Move the empty pool to ground that is level.
Can I put it on decking?
The manual says no: do not site the pool on a deck, a driveway, gravel, or asphalt. About 4.7 tonnes for the 10 ft set, or about 9.2 tonnes for the 100 cm set, is a structural check, not a guess from standing on the boards.
What do I do if the water is deeper on one side?
Drain it and re-level the empty pool. Do not add more water to balance it, and do not drag it while it is heavy. A tilted waterline means one wall is taking the load.
How full is full?
For a Steel Pro, the manual's line is about 90 percent, not over the top of the wall. The 100 cm listing states 9,150 litres at that 90 percent fill. If the listing states 80 percent, use that figure rather than the top of the wall.
Can I drag it a metre once it has water in it?
No. The manual says you do not move the pool with water in it. Empty it, move the shell, check the ground, and fill again. The same rule applies to an Easy Set.
When do I call someone instead of finishing the job?
Call an electrician if the outdoor socket, the RCD, or a non-UK plug is unclear. Get a structural check before several tonnes go on a deck. Ask the planning authority if the house is listed or you are outside England.
