Cloudy above ground pool water

Updated: October 2026

The pool looked clear on Saturday, and by Monday you cannot see the floor. Cloudy above ground pool water on these round sets is usually a circulation problem, a sanitiser problem, or both, and the pump that came in the carton is often the weak part. The [round pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-round) is the nine amazon.co.uk listings we kept on 19 October 2026. This page does not choose a diameter and it does not rank a top pick. It tells you how to check the one printed flow rate, what to do when the plug is not British, and where chlorinated water must not go. We did not meter a pump or test a water sample.

Cloudiness is a flow problem as often as a chemical one

Bestway's own filter guide says a pump that is too small leaves algae and debris, and that you should aim to filter the whole volume in about six hours. Fi-Clor's above-ground owner's guide, a supplier document rather than a statute, links cloudy water to low sanitiser or a dirty cartridge, and it gives a free-chlorine band of 2-4 mg/l for small splash pools. Do not merge that band with PWTAG public-pool figures. Those bands are rules of thumb, and only when the listing prints both volume and litres per hour. On the Bestway Steel Pro Max 10 ft, 4,678 litres, a pump is in the box and litres per hour are not stated. Reviewers call it too small, and several say it stopped within days. The 56407 and the 12 ft draw the same weak or dead comments. If the water clouded after two days, check the cartridge and whether the pump is running before you dose water that is not moving.

Only one listing prints litres per hour

The Bestway Steel Pro Max 56418 is 366 cm across and 100 cm high, listed at 9,150 litres when filled to 90 percent, at £299. The box states a filter pump at 2,006 litres per hour. Bestway's six-hour sketch, as arithmetic and not a test, is 9,150 divided by six, about 1,525 litres per hour, so 2,006 sits above it. You cannot run that sum on the other pumped sets. The 10 ft Max and the 56407 leave litres per hour blank. The 12 ft 530 gallons bullet has no per-hour unit. The two Easy Sets and the Intex 28200EP, 28205EH, and 28205NP do not list a pump. Cloudy water after a weekend is what a volume does with no circulation.

The plug has to fit a UK socket

UK mains are 230 V, and a garden pump needs a BS 1363 plug on a circuit protected by an RCD. Electrical Safety First says you test a garden-pump RCD at least every three months. Several reviews of the Bestway 56407 say an American-style plug would not go into a UK socket. That is a review, not a specification line. One 100 cm review says an EU adaptor did not fit, and one 12 ft review mentions a 2-pin plug. Stop if the label is not 230 V or the plug is not BS 1363. Do not put a travel adaptor on a 120 V pump. How the pool sits on the ground is on the setup guide.

Emptying is not any drain

Chlorinated water does not go in a surface-water drain. The 9,150 litre line is about 9.2 tonnes, and the 10 ft Max at 4,678 litres is about 4.7 tonnes, so plan the route before you fill. NetRegs, writing for businesses in Scotland and Northern Ireland, says you need authorisation before you dispose of pool water. That is not a permit for an English garden. If you are unsure where the drain goes, ask the water company or the council. If you cannot see the bottom, stop using the pool.

Common questions

Why did the water cloud after two days?
Usually the cartridge pump is too small or already stopped, or the sanitiser is not holding. On the 10 ft Max, the 56407, and the 12 ft, reviewers call the included pump weak or dead within days, and those listings do not print litres per hour.
How do I check if the included pump is big enough?
Only when the listing prints both volume and flow. Divide litres by litres per hour. Bestway's rule of thumb is about six hours. With no litres-per-hour figure, you cannot run the sum.
Which pool in the table states a flow rate?
Only the Bestway 56418: 9,150 litres at 90 percent, pump at 2,006 litres per hour, £299 on 19 October 2026. Dividing 9,150 by six gives about 1,525 litres per hour. The other pumped sets do not give a comparable line.
How often do cartridges need changing?
A ManoMano UK guide puts changes on a scale of weeks. That is retail advice, not a legal interval. A new cartridge does not repair a motor that died in the first week.
What if the plug is not British?
Stop before you fill. Mains are 230 V and the plug should be BS 1363, on an RCD you test at least every three months. Do not use a travel adaptor on a 120 V pump. If the socket or the RCD is unclear, call an electrician.
Where can the water go when I empty the pool?
Not into a surface-water drain if it is chlorinated. NetRegs says businesses in Scotland and Northern Ireland need authorisation before disposing of pool water. That is not an English householder permit. If you cannot tell the drains apart, ask the water company or the council.
When is cloudy water a reason to stop using the pool?
Stop when you cannot see the bottom, when the pump will not run, or when voltage and plug are not confirmed as 230 V and BS 1363. Fi-Clor's 2-4 mg/l band is a supplier figure, not a licence to swim in water you cannot see through.
