Round above ground pool buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A lawn can look generous until you pace out a circle and remember the water has to sit on ground that is already flat. This round above ground pool buying guide splits three choices the product title glues together: how wide the circle is, how high the wall is, and how many tonnes that water will weigh. The [round pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-round) holds the nine amazon.co.uk listings we kept on 19 October 2026. This page is the order to use before you sort that table by stars. Prices are those shelf figures, not a later offer, and we did not fill the pools in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the flat circle first

Start with the patch that is already level, not with the diameter in the title. A 10 ft pool in this set is about 3.05 m across. The water circle itself is about 7.3 square metres. A 12 ft pool is about 3.66 m across and about 10.5 square metres on the same calculation. The small end here is the Intex Easy Set at 183 cm, then the 8 ft frames and the 8 ft Easy Set at about 2.44 m. The 100 cm Bestway is also 366 cm across. A patio that can take 2.44 m will not take 3.66 m. The setup guide covers a waterline that is already deeper on one side.

Depth decides what you can do in the water

Wall height is a different job from diameter. The 6 ft Easy Set and the 8 ft Intex frames are 51 cm, and the 8 ft Easy Set is 61 cm. Most of the 10 ft and 12 ft frames are 76 cm. Only the Bestway Steel Pro Max 56418 is 100 cm. Seventy-six centimetres is enough to sit and cool off. It is not a length-swimming pool, and an adult will not stand in it with the water at chest height. Skip a 51 cm wall if you wanted adults sitting with their shoulders under the water.

The water is the heavy part

One litre of water is about a kilogram. The Bestway Steel Pro Max 10 ft lists 4,678 litres, which is about 4.7 tonnes on the lawn before you add the frame. The 100 cm set's 9,150 litres at 90 percent is about 9.2 tonnes. Bestway's Steel Pro manual says not to site the pool on a deck, a driveway, gravel, or asphalt. Follow the manual and get a structural check before several tonnes go onto timber. Chlorinated water should not go into a surface-water drain. Where it can go is on the filter and water page.

A pump in the box is not a flow rate

Read the included-parts line before the star rating. Only the 100 cm set prints a flow rate: 2,006 litres per hour. The 12 ft bullets say the pump can filter up to 530 gallons and do not say per hour, so that line is not a flow you can compare. Bestway's sizing note is a rule of thumb: aim to turn the volume over in about six hours. A pump in the carton means you are not buying a second box on day one. It does not mean the pump is sized for the water. A ground cloth, a cover, and chlorine are often extra.

England planning is Class E, not a blanket exemption

In England, a garden pool can fall under Class E permitted development when it is incidental to the house, not forward of the principal elevation, not in the curtilage of a listed building, and inside the 50 percent curtilage limit. That is the GOV.UK householder technical guidance, not a product promise. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are not covered by that English order. Ask the council if you are unsure. PWTAG technical note 65 says a domestic above-ground pool is not a hire pool for teaching or commercial use.

Common questions

What diameter fits if I only have a small lawn?
Measure the flat area, not the whole garden. An 8 ft pool is about 2.44 m across. A 10 ft pool is about 3.05 m. A 12 ft pool is about 3.66 m and about 10.5 square metres. If the only level patch is a patio, start with the 8 ft frames.
Is 76 cm deep enough for adults?
It is enough to sit and cool off. It is not deep enough to swim lengths, and an adult will not have the water at chest height. The only 100 cm wall is the Bestway 56418, at £299 with a ladder in the box.
How heavy is 4,678 litres of water?
About 4.7 tonnes, because a litre of water is about a kilogram. That is the stated capacity of the Bestway Steel Pro Max 10 ft, before you add the frame. The 100 cm set’s 9,150 litres at 90 percent full is about 9.2 tonnes.
Which listings include a pump?
The Bestway 10 ft Steel Pro Max, the Bestway 56407, the Bestway 12 ft, and the Bestway 56418 list a filter. The two Easy Sets and the Intex frames 28205NP, 28205EH, and 28200EP do not. Only the 56418 prints a flow rate, 2,006 litres per hour.
Do I need planning permission in England?
You might not, and you might. Class E can cover a pool that is incidental to the house, not in front of the principal elevation, not in a listed curtilage, and within the 50 percent curtilage limit. Ask the council if any of those fail, or if you are in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
Is a 51 cm pool still a drowning risk?
Yes. RoSPA warns that children drown in very shallow water and that rain refills a pool you emptied. The RLSS UK line is to stay within arm’s reach. A 51 cm wall is still past the 400 mm line in BS EN 16582-3. Empty small pools after use.
