How to fit a round pool cover

Updated: 21 October 2026

How to fit a round pool cover starts with the failure: the hem splits when the cord is yanked toward you, the sheet lifts in a breeze, or rain sags the cloth into the water. Centre the sheet with a second person, tighten along the hem, then deal with rain. If it will not pass the rim without force, stop. Product choice stays on the [round pool cover comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cover-round). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk review notes in this set and Intex’s support note. There was no lab test. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Get the sheet over the rim

Plan on two people once the pool is about 8 ft across. Intex Support says one person holds an end while the other walks the sheet over the ring or the wall, and that sunlight can help vinyl stretch. Keep the overhang even before anyone pulls a cord. The Neuradical cover, 5.15 kg for a 16 ft frame, is a two-person lift. On an inflatable ring, pump it to swimming firmness first. A soft ring is a smaller circle, and Intex says it needs more air or a tighter rope. If the cloth will not go over without force, stop and measure the rim on the round pool cover buying guide. Do not stand on the cover to stretch it.

Tighten without ripping the hem

Pull the cord along the sleeve, around the pool, so the hem closes evenly. Pulling the rope outward loads one eyelet and tears the cloth. On Intex 28021 a review describes about 2 ft of hem ripped when the sheet was forced. On the Bestway cover, reviews say the drawstring snaps. A tear is the stop. If the sheet is too tight, let sun-warmed vinyl ease before you snug the rope. If it is too loose, drain holes sit low enough to let leaves in. Retie with the ring still firm. Loose Easy Set cases are on the Intex Easy Set pool cover page. Intex’s care line for 28021 is mild detergent, then store it out of the sun.

Wind and a cord that only grips one side

A drawstring is a weak fastening because the tension is uneven. Faircovers says wind gets under any gap. Cadoal reviews say the cord tightens one side and the sheet blows off. Oiieco reviews say the retainers pulled out. Ousinby reviews say the cord has no lock and fails in a light wind. Those sheets have no stakes in the bullets. Pegs you add are your own fix. QWORK includes nails and hooks, and reviewers still say about four points are not enough in wind. Neuradical adds a 1.5 m strap and stakes. Keep the overhang even. Clips on a leaf net do not repair a torn drawstring sheet.

Rain on the cover

Intex 28021, Intex 28022E and the Bestway cover print drain holes so water does not accumulate, and those holes let debris in when the cover sits slack. QWORK and Neuradical do not state holes. A QWORK review says dragging a full sheet tore it, so empty it first. Neuradical reviews say rain stays until the centre is lifted. A pillow or a bag of balls is not in the box. World of Pools sells an air pillow and says to inflate it about halfway. That is a separate product, as is a cover pump. Do not leave the rain on the sheet as a weight. The weight pulls the hem and the wall.

Common questions

Should one person fit the cover or two?
Use two people from about 8 ft upwards. Intex Support describes one person holding an end while the other walks the sheet over the ring or the wall. A 5.15 kg Oxford cover for a 16 ft pool is a two-person lift. One person can spread a light PE sheet, and that is the sheet reviews say blows off. A second pair of hands keeps the overhang even while the cord is tied.
Which way do I pull the cord?
Pull along the hem, around the pool, so the sleeve closes in a circle. Pulling the rope out towards you loads a single point and rips the cloth. On Intex 28021 a review describes about 2 ft of hem torn when the sheet was forced. On the Bestway cover, reviews say the cord itself snaps. If the rope only grips one side, as Cadoal reviewers describe, stop and loosen it. Tightening the short side harder makes the tear more likely.
What if the cover is too tight and starts to tear?
Stop. A tear means the sheet is the wrong size, the ring is the wrong shape, or the cord was pulled outward. Sunlight can help a vinyl cover ease, which is Intex’s own note, and a soft ring may need more air. Measure the outside of the top ring and match one printed diameter. Do not stand on the cover to gain the last bit of stretch.
What if it is too loose and flaps?
A loose sheet walks off the ring and lets wind underneath. Firm the inflatable ring, then retie so the overhang is even and the cloth stays above the water. Drain holes that hang into the pool let leaves in. That shows up when the Bestway cord leaves the cover slack, and when the 12 ft Intex cover drops off the lip. A cord with no lock, as Ousinby reviewers describe, will not hold the slack.
Can I leave the rain on the cover as weight?
No. Rain on a cover with no holes becomes a pond in the middle. The weight tears cloth if you drag it, which is what a QWORK review describes, and it can pull on the pool wall. Lift the water off before you move the sheet. A pillow or a bag of balls is not supplied with these covers. Drain holes avoid the pond and let dirt through when the fit is low.
When do I stop and buy a different size?
Stop when the sheet will not pass the rim without tearing, or when a steel-pole pool is wearing an Easy Set cover that reviews already call too short. Pulling harder does not change the diameter. Go back to the outside of the top ring and to a listing whose size lines agree. Keep children off the pool while the cover is half on. The cover is not a fence.
