Oval pool buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a narrow lawn and a shortlist of oval above-ground pools that look like the same blue ring in the photos. The price is the loudest number on the page, and it is the last check that should decide the order. This oval pool buying guide is that sequence, before you use the [oval pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/oval-pool). That page ranks four amazon.co.uk listings as filed on 16 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Frame kit or steel wall

A frame oval hangs a liner on tubes or poles. A steel-wall oval is a sheet-steel shell with a liner of its own. The word steel in a title does not tell you which of those you are buying. The Bestway Steel Pro MAX oval, model 5613ZE, is a frame kit. The Funsicle Oval Oasis is a frame kit as well. Summer Fun part 341005 and the Planet Pool are sheet shells. Both frame titles print 33 in. On the Bestway attribute line that height is 0.84 m. You sit or splash. An adult does not stand in it. Summer Fun’s title is 1.20 m, with 13,500 litres stated. Planet Pool’s title is 1.50 m, and that listing does not state litres. A litre of water is about a kilogram, so Summer Fun’s figure is about 13.5 tonnes once full. The Bestway’s 31.8 kg is the empty kit.

What the box actually contains

A skimmer is an opening in the wall that takes water from the surface. It is a fitting, and the pump is a separate machine. Summer Fun’s included-components line says skimmer, and the bullets add a return nozzle. Planet Pool’s included field says skimmer. Neither steel-wall listing names a pump. Bestway’s bullets include a filter pump, a Type I cartridge and a repair patch. Funsicle’s bullets name a FiltraBoost 400S and state 110 to 120 V. UK mains are 230 V, and a UK socket takes a BS 1363 plug. None of these four files shows 230 V or that plug. A printed 110 to 120 V figure is a reason to stop the order. None of the four included-components lines names a ladder.

When the listing disagrees with itself

Believe the conflict, and keep the lines separate. The Bestway title is an oval, 10 ft by 6 ft 7 in by 33 in. The dimension attribute is 3.05 m by 3.05 m by 0.84 m, a square. The bullets say a three-layer Tritech liner. The material field says Cardboard. Summer Fun’s title is 3.00 m by 5.00 m by 1.20 m, and the attribute width is 1.2 m. Planet Pool’s title and attributes both read 6.00 m by 3.20 m by 1.50 m. The Bestway states 969 gallons and does not say US or imperial. How the two constructions differ is on steel wall pool vs frame pool.

Rules that still apply

In England, an outdoor pool at a house is often permitted development under Class E of the GPDO 2015 when it is incidental to the house and the outbuilding limits are met. Designated land, green belt and a listed building still need a check. In Scotland, Class 3B generally keeps this work at the rear, not over 3 m high, and outside a conservation area or a listed curtilage. Ask the council if that misses your garden. None of these listings claims BS EN 16582. A new circuit is work for a registered electrician under BS 7671 Section 702. SPATA describes a typical 1.5 m fence as guidance, and that guidance is not a statute. Clearance and load on a narrow plot are on oval pool for a small garden.

Common questions

Is a steel frame the same as a steel-wall pool?
A steel frame holds a liner on tubes. The Bestway and the Funsicle are that kind of kit, both at 33 in. A steel-wall pool in this set is the Summer Fun shell or the Planet Pool shell. The Bestway title contains the word steel, and the listing is still a frame.
Does a skimmer mean the water stays clean?
A skimmer is the opening that collects surface water. Summer Fun includes a skimmer and names a return nozzle. Planet Pool’s included field says skimmer. The pump is the machine that moves that water through a cartridge or a sand filter, and neither shell names a pump. A skimmer on its own leaves the water sitting.
How should I read 969 gallons?
The Bestway listing states 969 gallons and does not label them as US or imperial. Those two gallons are different litre figures, so a single conversion would invent a precision the page withheld. Keep 969 gallons as an untyped claim. The empty kit is 31.8 kg. That figure is the carton, and the water is the load that matters once you fill.
What if the size attribute is square and the title is oval?
Keep both lines. The Bestway title is an oval, 10 ft by 6 ft 7 in. The attribute is 3.05 m by 3.05 m, a square. Summer Fun’s title width is 3.00 m and the attribute width is 1.2 m. Confirm the footprint with the seller, or prefer a listing whose lines agree.
Do I need planning permission before I order?
An outdoor pool at a house in England is often permitted development under Class E, when it is incidental to the dwelling and the limits are met. Designated land, green belt and listed buildings are the usual reasons that shortcut fails. Scotland uses Class 3B. Ask the council when your plot is one of those cases.
What must I still buy after the shell?
On the two steel-wall listings, buy a filter pump, because the box list stops at a skimmer. On every listing here, plan for a ladder. The Funsicle pump is printed at 110 to 120 V. A new circuit is an electrician’s job under BS 7671 Section 702.
