Paddling pool safety

Updated: 21 October 2026

A paddling pool looks too shallow to worry about. Paddling pool safety advice from RoSPA, the Royal Life Saving Society UK and NHS child-health pages still says to stay within reach and to empty the pool when play stops. This page is that routine. It does not rank the listings. Setup sits on [how to set up an inflatable pool](/hub/swimming-pools/inflatable-pool/sub/inflatable-pool-how-to-set-up). Sizes and prices sit on the [inflatable pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/inflatable-pool), from amazon.co.uk captures on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not run a safety test. Shallow water is enough

Healthier Together, the NHS pages for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, says a baby can drown in as little as 5 cm of water and tells you to empty a paddling pool. Just One Norfolk makes the same 5 cm point. RoSPA’s under-5s PDF says less than 3 cm. The AirSwim is about 25 cm high and holds 100 litres. The Bestway wall is 46 cm. The Easy Set title wall is 51 cm. The lounge wall is 0.66 m. Wall height is not the depth you leave. RLSS UK’s Splash Safely page, updated on 1 May 2026, includes paddling pools among home water risks. Its “1 in 3” line is children who drowned at home in places like paddling pools, hot tubs and ponds.

Stay where you can reach

RLSS UK says constant supervision at arm’s reach for young children, and it says armbands are not supervision. An older child is not the supervisor. RoSPA’s drowning page says inflatables do not replace that watch. The age line on a listing is a product label, not permission to leave. The AirSwim title says toddlers 1–3. The Easy Set age line is 6+. The lounge says 3 years to 99 years. A 2.29 m lounge is a harder supervision job than a 90 cm baby pool. You still should not leave the baby pool. The criteria order is the inflatable pool buying guide.

Empty it and turn it

When play stops, empty the paddling pool and turn it over so it cannot catch rain. That is the line from RLSS UK and from RoSPA. Rain can refill a pool you thought was finished. A shower is enough to put a few centimetres back. None of these eight listings includes a filter. Leaving 400 litres, or the Easy Set’s 880 or 890 litres, keeps the risk after the children go inside. Use the drain the listing names. If it names none, you still empty it and turn it over. If a child has been under the water, even briefly, get urgent medical care. RoSPA’s guidance is to have a rescued child checked.

A standard is not a lifeguard

EN 71-8:2018 is designated under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 for Great Britain. For paddling pools its scope stops at 400 mm water depth. BS EN 16582-3 and EN 16927 exclude those paddling pools. None of these listings names those standards. 400 mm is a boundary between standards, not a depth you can leave a child in. The lounge wall at 0.66 m is already past that boundary. Treat it as a pool you supervise and empty. It is not a claim that any ASIN complies with EN 71-8. The Consumer Rights Act is about a product that arrives faulty. It does not supervise the afternoon. An adult stays in reach, and when play stops the pool goes upside down.

Common questions

Can a child drown in a paddling pool?
Yes. NHS pages say a baby can drown in a few centimetres. RoSPA’s under-5s PDF says less than 3 cm, and Healthier Together says 5 cm. The pool does not have to look deep. Stay in reach, and empty the pool when play stops.
How deep is deep enough to be dangerous?
Healthier Together and Just One Norfolk say as little as 5 cm. RoSPA’s under-5s PDF says less than 3 cm. Keep both figures. Do not average them. The AirSwim, the Bestway and the Easy Set can all be filled well past either number. A shallow splash fill is still inside the range those pages warn about. Wall height on the title is not a safe fill line.
Do armbands mean I can go inside?
No. RLSS UK says armbands are not supervision and that a young child needs an adult at arm’s reach. A seat ring does not change that. An older brother or sister is not the adult. If you need to go inside, take the child with you or empty the pool first. Being able to see the garden from a window is not arm’s reach.
Should I empty it every time?
Yes. RLSS UK says empty it straight away and turn it over. RoSPA says empty a paddling pool after use. These listings do not include a filter. A cover is for a larger pool you mean to keep full, not for a paddling pool you might use again tomorrow.
What about rain?
Rain can put water back into a pool you have emptied if the ring is still upright. RoSPA warns about that refill. Turn the pool over, or store it where it cannot catch a shower. A few centimetres from an afternoon’s rain is the same hazard as the water you just tipped out. Check it again after wet weather even if you thought it was dry.
When should a child who went under the water see a doctor?
Straight away. If a child has been under the water, get urgent medical care even if they cough and seem to recover. RoSPA’s point on a child rescued from water is to have them checked. Do not wait through the afternoon, and do not treat “they look fine” as a clearance. Then empty the pool so the same water is not still sitting there.
