Triangle shade sail buying guide

Updated: 16.10.2026

You already have three places a cloth could hang, and the title size is still the wrong number to shop from. A triangle shade sail buying guide starts with those fixing points. The figure on the box is the sail, often corner to corner with a curved edge, so the shade on the paving is smaller once you leave room to pull it tight. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, updated on 16 October 2026. We read the ready-made triangles in the [triangle shade sail comparison](/hub/sun-shades/triangle-shade-sail). We did not hang them in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the span, not the patio

Write down the distance between each pair of anchors you will actually use, not the length of the patio slab. A 3 × 3 × 3 m equilateral sail has about 3.9 square metres of cloth if the sides are straight. A straight 3-4-5 triangle has 6 square metres. Curved edges, cut so the middle can pull tight, make the hung shade smaller than either figure. Shade Sail Boutique treats the stated size as the sail and asks for about 280–365 mm of free room at each corner. Clara Shade Sails says the sail should be smaller than the span, so cover is less than the area between the posts. Those three numbers decide whether the sides match each other.

Equal sides or a longer third side

When the three spans are within a few centimetres of each other, an equilateral sail tensions more evenly. In this set that is both HEYOMART 2.5 m colourways and the 3 m KAHEIGN, DAJAVE and YOUNTHYE sails. When one span is clearly longer, a house wall against two shorter returns, look at a longer third side. MOXTOYU is 3 × 3 × 4.3 m, RICHIE is 3 × 3 × 4.25 m, Sowoxdme is 3 × 3 × 4 m, and the smaller MissYolo is 3 × 3 × 4.3 m. A square corner of a wall is a third case. IOAOI and the larger MissYolo are titled 3 × 4 × 5 m, which is a right angle only while the edges stay straight. The wall-corner fit is the right angle or equilateral triangle shade sail page.

Ropes or a kit

Several boxes are the sail plus ropes. KAHEIGN includes four 2 m ropes and no hooks. IOAOI includes three ropes, and reviews say brackets were bought separately. RICHIE tells you to buy hooks. Sowoxdme is one canopy and three 2.5 m ropes. Neither MissYolo file prints a parts list, and the shared reviews say tension adjusters are not supplied. Three listings are closer to a kit. MOXTOYU, at about £28.99, lists ropes, pad eyes, a carabiner, tighteners and screws. DAJAVE, at about £19.99, and YOUNTHYE, at about £23.99, also list pad eyes and screws. HEYOMART adds three pad eyes and three 200 cm ropes, and no screws. The screws still do not name the wall.

Read the water line and the UV line last

A waterproof word in the title is not a reason to ignore the size. HEYOMART’s title says waterproof, then a bullet says water resistant at 400 mm hydrostatic head and that the cloth is not completely waterproof. DAJAVE limits the claim to light and moderate rain and allows slight leakage in continuous heavy rain. MOXTOYU claims 2000 mm and also says it is not for heavy rain. KAHEIGN’s title says waterproof, and a review says it is not. Those clashes are unpacked on the waterproof triangle shade sail page. Read the sentence under the title, and assume one corner still has to sit lower. The order stays span, then shape, then the box, then the rain sentence.

Common questions

What size triangle shade sail do I need for a patio?
Measure the three fixing points, then subtract the tension gap before you match a title. UK specialists talk about roughly 280–365 mm at each corner, and HEYOMART and RICHIE say leave 1.5–2 ft. A 3 m equilateral sail suits spans a little over 3 m. A 2.5 m sail suits a shorter run. The shaded patch is the cloth inside those gaps, not the patio slab.
Should I buy a fixing kit or ropes only?
Buy ropes only if pad eyes or hooks are already in sound anchors. Buy a kit if you still need pad eyes and screws. HEYOMART adds pad eyes but not screws. The screws still do not name the wall, and a fence panel is a poor anchor either way.
Is 2.5 m enough or do I need 3 m?
A 2.5 m equilateral sail is enough when each span, after the tension gap, is about 2.5 m, such as a balcony or a small table. A 3 m sail has more cloth, about 3.9 square metres if the sides were straight, and still will not shade a 3 m square. If your hooks are about 4 m apart, neither equilateral size in this set is the right cloth.
Does a higher UV percentage mean I can skip sunscreen?
No. The 90–98% lines are seller claims, not an NHS result and not a laboratory figure from this comparison. NHS sun safety still pairs shade with clothing and sunscreen. The low corner of a triangle lets sun in for part of the day, and arms often sit outside the cloth even when you are under it.
Which listings have no star rating?
DAJAVE and YOUNTHYE have no Customer Reviews line in the raw files we used. Every other sail in the set has a star line, but HEYOMART’s 4.1 from 3,648 is shared across the grey and green ASINs, and MissYolo’s 4.5 from 92 is shared across two sizes. Do not add those pairs together when you compare them.
