Waterproof or breathable shade sail

Updated: 16.10.2026

The amazon.co.uk title has already said waterproof. That word is not the decision. A waterproof or breathable shade sail is one job or the other in this set, and several listings print both ideas on the same page. Read the attribute, the heavy-rain line and the reviews together. The twelve sails are in our [sun sail comparison](/hub/sun-shades/sun-sail). The Products Compared editorial team did not hose these cloths in a lab. Figures are the stored amazon.co.uk listings from 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two jobs, not one fabric

The first job is staying dry for a passing shower: a coated sheet, hung with a slope, over a table or a pram you do not want spotted. The second job is cutting sun on a warm patio while air still moves. One cloth does not do both well. A membrane that blocks rain also blocks the breeze and holds heat underneath. A light polyethylene weave lets rain through and lets the wind spill. The job test comes before the brand.

What the specialists say

UK shade-sail sellers split the cloths the same way, and their numbers belong to their own ranges, not to these ASINs. Shade Sail Boutique and Maanta’s UK pages put knitted polyethylene on the sun-and-air side, and coated polyester on the shower side, because the coating holds water and needs a slope. Prefer that specialist split, and prefer the review in this set that says the polyethylene sail is certainly not waterproof. None of these listings prints a wind class, and BS EN 13561 does not supply one for a non-retractable sail. Breathable cloth spills more wind. It is not storm-proof.

How these listings use the words

The breathable pair in this set is KAHEIGN. Cream B08TX2TB61 is about £18.99 and grey B0FDWXLZN2 is about £24.99. Both say 120 g/m² polyethylene, 2.5 x 3 m, with four 1 m ropes. The stored UK review text is the same on both pages, including a line that the cloth is certainly not waterproof. The cream attribute still says waterproof. The grey attribute says water resistant. Count the reviews once. A flat hang can still hold a puddle in the middle, which is sag, not a roof. The coated group is the Oxford and polyester sails. HEYOMART’s 2 x 2 m square is the clearest contradiction: the title says waterproof, the bullets state a 400 mm water head, and they also say water resistant, not waterproof. Mokani’s pages warn that continuous heavy rain may seep, even where the word waterproof appears. The 3 x 3 m attribute says water resistant while the bullets say waterproof. DAJAVE’s rectangle and triangle say light to moderate rain only.

When to pick which

Choose the KAHEIGN polyethylene when the job is sun and airflow and you can live with rain coming through. Count the grey listing once. Choose a coated sail when you want a light shower kept off a slope, and when you will hang one corner lower. How you slope a coated sheet is on how to install a shade sail. Inside this set, the reviewed coated rectangles are the two Mokani sails and, with a smaller and mixed review file, the RICHIE 2 x 3 m. HEYOMART is coated on the spec and contradicted on the water words, so treat it as water resistant shade at about £19.99, not as a roof. DAJAVE and YOUNTHYE use a waterproof or rain line and have no reviews, so the word is unchecked. No sail here is both a dry roof and a cool wind-spill shade. If the coated sail still ponds, the fix is slope and tension, not a scissor hole in the belly.

Common questions

Which cloth sheds a shower and which lets rain through?
Coated polyester and Oxford are the shower claim in this set, with a heavy-rain caveat on Mokani and a light-to-moderate limit on DAJAVE. The 120 g/m² KAHEIGN polyethylene is the cloth a stored review calls certainly not waterproof. HEYOMART’s own bullets say water resistant, not waterproof, under a waterproof title. Read the cautious line on the same page before you trust the title.
Why does a waterproof sail pool water?
Because the coating that keeps rain from falling through also stops it draining through the weave. On a flat or slack sail the water gathers in the belly. Reviewers describe that on Mokani’s 3 x 4 m sail, and one person cut a hole to drain it, which ruins the sheet. A slope, with one corner lower, is how these sellers say you shed the water.
Is 120 g/m² polyethylene a rain roof?
No. That is the KAHEIGN cloth, cream and grey. Specialist UK pages treat this kind of polyethylene as shade that lets air and rain through. One shared review says it is certainly not waterproof, even though the cream attribute uses the word waterproof. It can still sag and hold a puddle if you hang it flat, which is not the same as keeping you dry.
What does a 400 mm water head mean on the HEYOMART sail?
It is the figure HEYOMART prints beside a 160 gsm cloth, in bullets that also say water resistant, not waterproof. It describes a column of water in a cloth test of the seller’s choosing. It does not mean a 2 x 2 m square, curved and possibly sagging, will roof a patio in continuous rain. The title’s waterproof wording is the line that conflicts with those bullets.
Will a coated sail be hotter underneath?
Yes, relative to a breathable weave, which is what Maanta and Shade Sail Boutique say about coated cloth: it holds heat as well as water. On a still July afternoon against a brick wall, that is the trade-off for keeping a shower off the table. If the seating area already overheats, the polyethylene sail is the cooler choice, and you get wet when it rains.
