Shade sail buying guide

Updated: 16.10.2026

A shade sail buying guide has to slow the purchase down. The title size, the word waterproof and the star line are what the listing shouts, and they are what most often misleads. Decide the anchors, then shade or a light shower, then the real cloth size and the box. Stars come last. The twelve-row [sun sail comparison](/hub/sun-shades/sun-sail) holds the table. The Products Compared editorial team read these amazon.co.uk listings on 16 October 2026. We did not hang the sails. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the anchors and the job

A sail works only if three or four points can take a pull that wind will increase. Gardens Illustrated’s notes put the stress on the anchors, suggest a fixing height around 2.4 m, and ask for one corner lower so water does not sit. That is their recommendation, not a result from this set. A rectangle needs four solid points. A triangle needs three. A fence panel is not an anchor. The second decision is the job. Breathable cloth is for sun and for letting some air through. Coated cloth is for a light shower over a table, and only if you can slope it. ManoMano’s UK guide starts with that split, then fabric and shape, and it asks for at least 30 cm between anchor and corner. NHS sun-safety advice still pairs shade with clothing and sunscreen, so a 95% or 98% UV line is a cloth claim, not a skin guarantee.

Read the cloth, not the waterproof word

Coated sails here are polyester or Oxford with a PU layer, often around 160 g/m², 180 gsm, or a 300D or 420D label. The breathable pair is the KAHEIGN cream and grey, both polyethylene at 120 g/m². Sailshadeworld, a UK seller, talks about 180 gsm as a light minimum and 340–350 gsm for a permanent sail on their own cloth. Those figures are not a lab score for these ASINs. Waterproof on a title is a weak signal. The Mokani 3 x 3 m bullets say waterproof and also say to avoid continuous heavy rain, while the attribute says water resistant. The HEYOMART title says waterproof, then the bullets give a 400 mm water head and call the cloth water resistant. When the lines disagree, plan around the more cautious one. Fabric is set out on waterproof or breathable shade sail.

Size, curve and what is in the box

The title size is usually corner to corner, not the shaded belly. Curved sides pull the middle in. A HEYOMART review measured about 1.42 m across the middle of a 2 m side. A RICHIE note on a 2 x 3 m sail put the shaded patch nearer 1.4 m by 2.4 m. You also leave a gap for tension. Ghligna says 30–45 cm. RICHIE and the Mokani 3 x 4 m say 1.5–2 ft. Those are seller rules, not one official allowance. The patio page works the examples on shade sail size for a patio. Then read the box as a shopping list. The Mokani 3 x 3 m is the sail and six ropes. The Mokani 3 x 4 m adds turnbuckles, pad eyes, screws and plugs. KAHEIGN includes four ropes of 1 m and no hooks, so a wide gap is a distance those ropes cannot bridge. If the sail matches the span exactly, it will not tension.

What the review line is worth

Stars count when the sample is real. The Mokani 3 x 3 m is 4.2 from 2,002 reviews. The Mokani 3 x 4 m is 4.3 from 672. HEYOMART is 4.0 from 1,575. The KAHEIGN colours, cream B08TX2TB61 and grey B0FDWXLZN2, share one 4.2 from 1,005 text. Adding them to 2,010 would invent a second crowd. Four listings have no Customer Reviews line: YOUNTHYE triangle B0H6B1LF6F, YOUNTHYE square B0H69DNKK1, DAJAVE rectangle B0H6LC5RBK and DAJAVE triangle B0H6LKHTWB. Ghligna is 4.0 from one review. ABTZENO is 3.7 from seven, and its title, size attribute and dimensions disagree. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should match their description. This guide stops at the order: anchors, job, cloth, size, box, then stars.

Common questions

What should I decide before I look at stars?
Name the fixing points and the job first. A rectangle needs four anchors that can take tension, and a triangle needs three. Then choose breathable shade or a coated cloth for a light shower on a slope. A 4.2 from thousands of reviews still describes the wrong product if the span is too short or the wall cannot be drilled.
Do I need a triangle or a rectangle?
Match the shape to the points you have. A rectangle covers a four-sided gap. A triangle suits three points, such as two wall fixings and one post. Curved sides pull the middle in on both. If you have only two solid points, neither shape in this set is ready to hang.
Is a fixing kit in the box enough?
A kit is screws, ropes or turnbuckles. It is not a design for your wall. The Mokani 3 x 4 m includes plugs and turnbuckles. The 3 x 3 m is ropes only. Expansion screws still need solid masonry. If the structure is doubtful, a builder should look before you buy the cloth.
What does gsm or 420D tell me?
They are cloth descriptions on the listing, from 120 g/m² polyethylene on KAHEIGN up to 180 gsm or 420D Oxford on some unreviewed sails. A UK specialist’s 180 gsm light minimum is guidance for their cloth, not a test of these ASINs. A heavier paper claim does not replace a review sample.
Why do two listings share one review count?
The cream and grey KAHEIGN sails store the same 4.2 from 1,005 review text. Price, colour and listed weight differ. The comments do not. Count that crowd once. Grey at about £24.99 does not add a second sample on top of the cream sail at about £18.99.
