Rectangular parasol vs round

Updated: 22.10.2026

The table is already long, the patio beside the bifold is a strip, and a round canopy in the search results looks simpler. Rectangular parasol vs round is the shape decision: an oblong covers the seats along a dining table or a wall-side run, and a round canopy covers a round table without unused corners of cloth. That split comes from UK shop guides and from the rectangles in the [rectangular parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/rectangular-parasol). This set contains no round parasol to score against these ASINs. We did not measure your garden in a wind tunnel. Long table or round table

A round canopy suits a round or small square table, because the cloth hangs past every seat by a similar amount. On a long table the ends stay in the sun unless the circle is so large it hits the door track. Ruma says rectangle for a long table. Their example is a cantilever, which is a different purchase. Cape & Co says a long table favours the rectangle and a round table favours the round. Overhang notes in the shops run about 30 cm, 50 cm and 60 cm. Do not average them. If your table's length is much greater than its width, the rectangle can follow it. A 200 x 125 cm oblong is a smaller cloth than a 3 m circle. Pole and base stay on the rectangular parasol buying guide.

Narrow patio, wall, and bifold doors

A round canopy meets a wall or a run of bifold doors on a curve, so part of the circle is over the frame. A rectangle can sit with one long side parallel to that wall. Cape & Co say a narrow patio and bifold doors favour the rectangle for that reason. Schneider's balcony note talks about a span of about 1.5 m to 2 m, which is the small end of this set, not the 4.5 m title. Cape & Co and Belveo say you should point the short side into the prevailing wind, and Cape calls a round canopy calmer when the wind swings. None of these listings prints an EN 13561 class. If the wind comes from several directions, a smaller round canopy can suit a round table better. Do not add side sheets.

What the rectangle in this set actually measures

The VOUNOT at about £33.36 is 200 x 125 cm. The Outsunny is 2 x 1.5 m. The clamp is 210 x 140 cm. The AKTIVE wall title says 160 x 100 cm, beside 160 x 160 x 100 cm. Grand patio prints 182 cm and 131 x 190 cm. The crank titles state 3.8 x 2 m. The patio title states 2.7 x 4.5 m. The VOUNOT double does not print the metres. There is no round canopy in the folder. On the VOUNOT and the Outsunny, the canopy-diameter field says 200 cm beside a rectangle. A 200 x 125 cm canopy is 2.5 square metres. A 200 cm circle covers different seats. This set is centre pole, clamp, or wall. The Grand patio's cantilever bullet sits on a 4.37 kg parasol.

What shape does not decide

Shape does not tell you whether the base is in the box, whether the pole is 32 mm or 38 mm, or whether the listing says crank, pull rope, or bendable. A round canopy with no base is as loose as an oblong with no base. Choose the rectangle when the furniture is long or the patio is a narrow run against a wall or a bifold. Choose round when the table is round or nearly square. If a page says 200 cm diameter and the size field says 200 x 125 cm, you are looking at a rectangle.

When the oblong is the shape

Take the rectangle when the table is much longer than it is wide, or when one long side can run beside a wall or a bifold. Take a round canopy when the table is round or nearly square. Compare areas, not the word rectangle, and read a diameter field as the long side when a second line prints a rectangle.

Common questions

When does a round parasol leave the ends of the table in the sun?
When the table is much longer than it is wide. The circle shades the middle and falls short at the heads, unless the diameter is so large that the sides no longer fit the patio. Compare a stated rectangle such as 3.8 x 2 m with your table.
When is a round canopy the better fit?
When the table is round or a small square, and when you do not have a long wall to follow. A circle gives a similar overhang all round. This folder does not contain a round ASIN to rank against the rectangles.
Does a rectangle sit closer to a wall or a bifold door?
One long side can run parallel to the frame, which a circle cannot do without overlapping the track. Cape & Co use that as the reason a narrow patio favours the rectangle. The shape does not move the foot.
Which way should the rectangle face the wind?
Point the short side into the prevailing wind. Cape & Co and Belveo both say that. It is not an EN 13561 class. If the wind comes from several directions, a smaller round canopy may suit a round table better.
Is a rectangle always a bigger sail?
A 200 x 125 cm rectangle is smaller than a 3 m round canopy. A 2.7 x 4.5 m rectangle is larger than a typical balcony circle. Compare areas, not the word. Tipping in the reviews is about the large oblongs.
Why does the listing say diameter on a rectangle?
Amazon's canopy-diameter field often prints the long side. On the VOUNOT 200 x 125 cm listing and the Outsunny, that field says 200 cm beside a rectangular size. The 200 cm is not a 2 m circle.
