How to fit a granite parasol base

Updated: 22.10.2026

The plate arrives as one heavy tile, and the cantilever cross is a separate frame you may already own. You need a sequence: a firm level spot, the weights on the feet, and the canopy staying closed until that weight is in place. You also need the point where a solo lift is a bad idea. This page is the fitting order, not a ranking of the three listings on our [granite parasol base comparison](/hub/sun-shades/granite-parasol-base). Products Compared used maker care notes and the Health and Safety Executive lifting filter, not a garden wind test, on 20 October 2026.

Put the cross on firm level ground first

Choose the spot before you unpack the stone. Nova Outdoor Living's cantilever care guide says firm level ground, the full specified weight, and the weights fitted before you open the canopy. A slope wastes the kilograms. A lawn is a poor substitute for paving unless the maker has given you a ground socket. This 25 kg plate does not include a cross, a pole, or a cover. A balcony that is not rated for about 100 kg of stone plus the furniture is a point where you stop.

Set the plates across the feet

Set each tile so it straddles the crossbar, rather than balancing on the end of one leg. Belveo's base guide uses the same geometry: a slab that sits on the tip of a foot can slide off when the arm turns. Garden Marketplace sells one 25 kg plate, 47 × 47 cm and and asks for at least two, with four if the place is exposed. One plate on one corner is not the minimum. Use the underside grooves to get a grip while you position the tile. They are not wheels, and the amazon.co.uk page does not confirm a carrying handle. Only when the seller's count is on the cross, and the frame is level, do you open the canopy. Opening first, then hunting for the second plate, is the sequence Nova warns against.

Lifting 25 kg off the ground

25 kg is not a promise that one person can lift the plate safely. The Health and Safety Executive leaflet INDG143, revised in January 2020, gives a filter, not a safe limit. The filter figure is 25 kg for men and 16 kg for women only when the load is close to the body, at about knuckle height, easy to grasp with both hands. A lift that starts on the floor is a poorer case than that knuckle-height box, and a polished plate with shallow grooves is hard to grasp. Stop and get a second person before a solo lift from the patio. Stairs are a case for a fillable base you carry empty, not a technique for this tile.

Close it, and do not force it

Once it is standing, the daily job is closing it. A heavy plate does not make an open parasol safe in a gale. Nova says close and secure the canopy when it is windy, when you leave it, and overnight. Do not force a stiff crank. Do not close a damp canopy: dry it while it is open, then fold it. 4 Seasons Outdoor say fold above Beaufort force 4 to 5. That is their line. The canopy still stays closed, covered, and dry. A cracked plate is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 rejection, not a tile you grout and call ballast. Choosing the object is the buying guide. The kilogram target for an offset arm is the cantilever parasol granite base page. Which ASIN to buy is on best granite parasol base.

Common questions

Where do the granite plates sit on a cantilever cross?
Each plate should lie flat across the foot it is loading, straddling the bar rather than perched on the end. Garden Marketplace's tile is 47 × 47 cm. The seller's minimum is two 25 kg plates, and four if the patio is exposed. The cross, the pole, and any cover come from the parasol, not from this listing.
Do I open the canopy before the weights are on?
No. Nova's care guide says the weights go on before you open, on firm level ground. If you only have one 25 kg tile and the seller asked for two, leave the canopy closed until the second plate is in place. A wobble after that means more weight or flatter ground, not a harder crank.
When do I close a cantilever parasol?
Close and secure it when it is windy, when you leave the garden, and overnight. If strong wind is forecast, take the canopy down rather than trusting the plates. 4 Seasons tell their own customers to fold above Beaufort force 4 to 5. Those are maker lines, not a shared UK law.
Can one person lift a 25 kg granite plate?
Do not treat 25 kg as a safe one-person lift. The HSE filter reaches 25 kg for men, and only 16 kg for women, when the load is close to the body at knuckle height and easy to hold. A plate on the floor, with a shallow groove and arms out, is outside that box. If you cannot keep the tile close and get a proper grip, ask a second person before you try.
Are the grooves a handle?
No. The Garden Marketplace bullets mention underside handling grooves for lifting and positioning. The amazon.co.uk page asks whether there is a handle and does not answer. The tile is about 4.4 cm thick, so the groove is a finger purchase, not a carrying handle and not a wheel.
Can I stand the cross on a lawn or a slope?
A slope wastes the kilograms. A lawn is soft, and these plates have no wheels. Use paving unless the maker specifies a ground socket. If the crank is stiff, stop, and do not fold damp fabric. A bent arm needs a fitter, not a longer bar.
