How to weigh down a gazebo

Updated: 22.10.2026

The bag in the box is a sleeve, the pegs are short, and the cover often goes on after the frame is already locked out. That is how a pop-up walks across a UK patio. This page is the order of work: cover on before the frame is fully out, then pegs or weights for the surface you actually have, then a stop when the forecast leaves the seller's warning. The Products Compared editorial team used the amazon.co.uk packs captured on 19 October 2026 and public UK pitching guides. We did not weigh a filled bag. Put the cover on before the frame is locked out

Open the frame part of the way, fit the canopy, then walk the legs out and lock them. Which? describes that order: two people, the cover on before the frame is fully extended. Gala Shade's UK guide says the canopy goes on at about half extension. If you lock a bare scissor frame first, the cloth fights you. UK reviews of the 3 x 3 m rows usually say two people. Reviews of the grey VOUNOT 3 x 6 m say four. Set the height last, and set it evenly. Guy ropes come after the feet are placed. Which? suggests about 45 degrees, and it notes that supplied pegs often bend.

Pegs on soil, weights on a patio

Pegs and ropes are for lawn you can drive a stake into. On concrete, decking and slabs the peg hits a hard stop and the leg lifts. Gazeboshop's securing guide says pegs fail on hard ground and that you need weights there. The dark grey Outsunny says to use stakes and guy ropes, and it also includes four sandbags and twelve stakes. All Seasons and the RELAX FIELD list weight bags without a wind speed. On a patio, put mass on the foot, or a strap from the leg to something that does not move. Gazeboshop says to attach straps to the frame, not the cloth. A strap through the canopy tears the seam. Guests and overnight sit on the gazebo for a garden party page.

The bags in the box are empty

A weight bag in these listings is an empty sleeve unless the bullet says the sand is included. In this set, it does not. Banner Box's instruction PDF says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing. Gazeboshop's pages use about 12.5 kg, 15 kg, 20 kg or 25 kg, depending on the article and whether walls are fitted. Cheshire West and Chester says 20 kg per leg on a four-leg 3 x 3 m. That is an organiser's rule, not the mass in a domestic carton. Four empty bags are 0 kg.

When to drop the roof

Rain sitting on the cloth is a load. The VOUNOT at £71.49 tells you not to let rainwater collect on the roof, because it can break the frame. If you can see a belly in the canopy, drop a corner or lower the height so the water runs. Seller lines are the stop rule you can point at. Outsunny says not to leave the 2 x 2 m or the 3 x 3 m in heavy weather. VOUNOT rows say they are not for unattended use or inclement weather. All Seasons warranty text on the 3 x 4.5 m says negligence includes leaving it up. Dry the cover before you close it. Which roof is worth pitching is the best pop-up gazebo page.

The order, then the stop

Part-open the frame, fit the cover, then lock the legs and set one height all round. Peg soil. On slabs, fill the sleeves, because the bags in these boxes arrive empty. Strap the leg, not the cloth. If the legs are lifting, or rain is sitting on the roof, it comes down.

Common questions

In what order do I open a pop-up?
Part-open the frame with two people, fit the canopy while it is still only partly extended, then walk the legs out and lock them. Set the height evenly and run the guy ropes at about 45 degrees. A 3 x 6 m in this set needed more than two people in the reviews.
What do I do on a patio where pegs will not go in?
Use filled weights on each leg, or a strap from the frame to something that will not move. Pegs are for soil. Gazeboshop is clear that they fail on concrete. The bags in these boxes arrive empty, so the sand is your job.
How heavy is a weight bag in the box?
It is a pouch until you fill it. Banner Box says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing. Gazeboshop's pages use about 12.5 kg to 25 kg, depending on the article and whether walls are fitted. None of those filled weights is printed on these listings.
Where do the guy ropes go?
Run them out from the leg at about 45 degrees, to a peg in soil or to a weight you trust, after the feet are in place. Which? notes that supplied pegs often bend. A rope tied only to the cloth does not replace a weight on slabs.
What if rain is sitting on the roof?
Get the water off before it sags. Lower a corner or reduce the height so it sheds. The £71.49 VOUNOT says pooled rain can break the frame, and reviews describe bars that bent.
When do I take it down?
Take it down when the forecast leaves the seller's line: heavy weather on the Outsunny rows, inclement or unsupervised use on the VOUNOT rows, and the All Seasons wording about not leaving it up. Dry the cloth before it goes in the bag.
