Gazebo wind safety: weight the legs, then know when to stop

Updated: 22.10.2026

You have a pop-up on the patio, the forecast has ticked up, and the empty sandbags look like a plan. They are not. A metal gazebo on this shelf is a textile roof on hinged steel, and no saved amazon.co.uk listing prints a wind class. Weight every leg with a figure you can attribute, strip the sides as the gusts rise, and take the frame down before you are arguing with the sky. How to open it is on [how to put up a pop up gazebo](/hub/sun-shades/gazebo-metal/sub/gazebo-metal-how-to-put-up). The shelf is the [metal gazebo comparison](/hub/sun-shades/gazebo-metal).

A pop-up is a sail with locks

The roof is cloth on scissor joints. Wind under the eaves lifts a leg and the square becomes a wing. Heavy duty on a £70 title is not a rating, and a commercial 60 mph label belongs to another frame. Saved reviews show the same mechanism. A RELAX FIELD buyer said a slight breeze flipped the frame while the supplied ropes and pegs were on. A VOUNOT was blown across the garden. An All Seasons 3 m by 4.5 m left in heavy rain collapsed, and the reviewer says the warranty was void.

Weight every leg, and say whose number you are using

There is no single legal kilogram. Do not average these figures into a rating of these frames. Banner Box says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing. Gazeboshop suggests 15 kg per leg up to 3 m by 3 m, and its FAQ also says 12.5 kg, or 25 kg if sidewalls are on. Those Gazeboshop numbers do not match. Cheshire West and Chester's 2025 event guidance says 20 kg per leg, and about 30 to 35 mph as the band where you strip or dismantle. Ballast Blocks call 40 kg a starting point, which is their product advice, not a duty on a householder lunch. An empty sandbag meets none of these. Which frame you are weighting is on the metal gazebo buying guide.

Sides off, then the whole frame down

Sides add sail. Gazeboshop's 25 kg per leg is the sidewall case. Gala Tent and Oxnorth say not to use a pop-up above about 30 mph, and to take sidewalls off. Gazeboshop calls over 35 mph typically too windy. Cheshire cites about 30 to 35 mph, sooner without an anemometer. None of that is printed on these listings. A mesh vent is not a wind certificate. The Outsunny's top hole is 288 cm, and that extra height is extra sail. Near those guides, sides off, then the frame down.

What a bent leg means

Stop using a frame that has bent, kinked, or lost a lock. Do not straighten a leg and put the roof back up. If it arrived broken, as reviewers describe on the grey four-sided VOUNOT and on one All Seasons 3 m by 4.5 m, that is a fault in the goods. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days under section 22 to reject goods that fail the statutory quality tests. Weather you left it in is why these warranties are refused. All Seasons' bullets say misuse voids the cover. If the frame has already travelled across the garden, check every slider before you fold it. Pack it to return it or to store it unused. This habit will not make a pop-up into a hardtop, which is the point of pop up gazebo vs hardtop.

If you are already unsure, take it down

If you can still work safely, sides come off before the frame does. At the 30 to 35 mph guides those sellers and Cheshire print, strike the gazebo while the legs are straight. A filled weight does not buy an overnight you can ignore.

Common questions

How many kilograms per leg?
Name the publisher. Banner Box says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing, Gazeboshop prints 15 kg and also 12.5 kg, or 25 kg with sidewalls, and Cheshire's 2025 note says 20 kg. None is a law. Empty bags count as zero.
Is 30 mph a law?
No. Oxnorth and Gala Tent tell their customers not to use a pop-up above about 30 mph. Gazeboshop says over 35 mph is typically too windy, and Cheshire cites about 30 to 35 mph for events. A garden has no anemometer duty. If you are already unsure, take it down. Do not read those speeds onto a £70 listing.
Should I take the sides off first?
Yes, while you can still work safely. Sides are the extra sail. If the gusts are already at the 30 to 35 mph guides, take the whole gazebo down. Do not peel Velcro from a chair in a wind you cannot hold.
Can I leave it up overnight if it is weighted?
Not on All Seasons' own terms. The brand says overnight and unattended use is outside the product, and a Trustpilot reply treats an overnight gust as the owner's risk. Outsunny tells you not to leave its frame up in heavy weather. If the forecast is poor, strike it before dark, while the legs are still straight.
Do pegs work on a patio?
No. Pegs need soft ground. On slabs, decking, and paving you need weight on every leg, starting at Banner Box's 13 kg on hard standing if that is the figure you are following. A peg between slabs is a trip and a poor hold. A patio will not do the job a stake does in soil.
