Metal gazebo: choose the frame before the brand

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are pricing a shelter for a UK patio lunch, with a table, a changeable forecast, and a boot that may have to take the bag home the same evening. A metal gazebo can be a folding steel canopy, a bolted garden frame, or a hardtop you leave up, and those are different buys. This page is the buying logic: the job, the floor, the water words on the listing, and whether you can hold every leg down. Saved prices run about £68 to £208, from those listings and public UK guides, not a lab. The shelf is the [metal gazebo comparison](/hub/sun-shades/gazebo-metal). Three products share the name

The word metal does not tell you whether the shelter comes down tonight. A pop-up is a folding steel frame with the roof on the scissor bars, a carry bag, and sometimes side panels. A fixed steel frame is bolted tube and cloth. In this set that is the Home Source Verano, and it is not a one-minute canopy. A hardtop is a rigid roof. None of these amazon.co.uk files is a hardtop. Outsunny's UK shop lists 3 m-class hardtops from about £524, a different budget from a folding canopy. Bulhawk's steel-or-aluminium split stays inside pop-ups and does not make a hardtop. If you have not decided whether the shelter stays up, that split is on pop up gazebo vs hardtop. Named roles sit on best metal gazebo.

Size the floor, not the carton

A 3 m by 3 m floor is 9 m², enough for a table and chairs if the legs sit outside the chairs. The All Seasons 3 m by 4.5 m states 13.5 m² and weighs 26 kg packed. The ABCCANOPY 2.5 m by 2.5 m is 6.25 m², and one reviewer used that square over a 2.1 m hot tub. When a floor-area field cannot be true, use the centimetres. The Home Source title says 256 cm by 160 cm by 278 cm and also prints 9 m². That rectangle is about 4.1 m². The cream All Seasons packed size is 150 cm by 25 cm by 25 cm. The black sibling's 7.6 cm cell is not a bag.

Read the water line exactly

Waterproof and water resistant are not the same word, and no UK statute defines them for a garden gazebo. Ecotent's 1,500 mm bar is that seller's rule of thumb. All Seasons calls a 260 g/m² coated roof waterproof on the cream 3 m and the 3 m by 4.5 m. Outsunny says water resistant and tells you not to leave it up in heavy weather. Home Source states 150D Oxford and 1,000 mm. That is the seller's claim, below Ecotent's bar, and not a lab result. If the legs lift, the cloth still fails. That limit is on gazebo wind safety.

Ballast, sides, and hands

The sandbags arrive empty. Pegs suit grass if you are not staking into a buried service. Slabs and decking need weight on every leg. Gazeboshop suggests 15 kg per leg up to 3 m by 3 m, Banner Box says at least 13 kg, and Cheshire's 2025 event note says 20 kg. Do not average those figures. Sides cut a low shower and add sail. The white VOUNOT includes walls, Outsunny includes two, and the All Seasons boxes do not. Packed weight runs from 13 kg to 26 kg. The heavier bags need two people.

Job, floor, then the words on the page

If the shelter has to come down the same day, shop the folding frames and leave the hardtop prices. If you need the roof in January, this set is the wrong shelf. Once it is a pop-up, measure the floor, then copy the water word on the page.

Common questions

Is a metal gazebo a pop-up or a permanent roof?
Both names get used for the same search. In this set, almost every listing is a folding steel pop-up with a textile roof. The Home Source Verano is a fixed steel frame with an Oxford cover, and it is still not a hardtop. A rigid roof sits on another shop shelf, from about £524 on Outsunny's UK site.
Will a 3 m by 3 m cover a dining table?
A 3 m by 3 m floor is 9 m², enough for a garden table and chairs if the gazebo legs sit outside the chairs. It gets tight once you add a barbecue, a cooler, and people standing. A longer table is why the 3 m by 4.5 m exists, at a stated 13.5 m² and 26 kg packed.
What does waterproof mean on a £70 listing?
It means the seller typed that word. It is not a British Standard result and not a test we ran. Check whether the page says waterproof, water resistant, or a millimetre figure such as the Home Source 1,000 mm line. A coated 260 g/m² roof and a 150D Oxford canopy are not the same claim.
Do I need sides?
You need them to block a low shower or a neighbour's sightline. You do not need them for overhead sun. Some VOUNOT and Outsunny listings include sides. The All Seasons boxes omit them. Sides also increase the sail, so a sided frame needs a strike habit when the gusts rise.
Are the sandbags in the box already heavy?
No. The bags in these kits are empty until you fill them. An empty bag does not meet a 13 kg or 15 kg per-leg figure from Banner Box or Gazeboshop. On a patio you need filled weights on every leg. On grass, pegs and guys can do the holding.
