How to put up a pop up gazebo on grass or slabs

Updated: 22.10.2026

You have a steel pop-up in a wheeled bag, a lawn or a patio, and two pairs of hands if you are lucky. The first opening is not a one-minute job, the sliders can pinch, and an unanchored frame is already a sail. This page is the order: site, roof on while the frame is still low, locks without force, then pegs or weights before anyone stands under it. Product choice stays on the [metal gazebo buying guide](/hub/sun-shades/gazebo-metal/sub/gazebo-metal-buying-guide). The shelf is the [metal gazebo comparison](/hub/sun-shades/gazebo-metal).

Before you pull

Pick a flat patch with no overhead lines. A saved All Seasons review puts the first canopy fit at about 20 minutes for two people. Two people are essential once the bag is around 20 kg: the All Seasons 3 m is 21 kg, the 3 m by 4.5 m is 26 kg, and the ABCCANOPY is 22 kg. The Outsunny is 13 kg, and reviewers still wanted two people for the first open. Have the anchors ready before you open the frame. Pegs and guys are for grass, after you have thought about buried services. On slabs or decking the weights must already be filled. The sandbags arrive empty. The Home Source Verano is a bolted frame, not this scissor sequence.

Open, roof, then lock

Open the frame only part way, with the canopy on, while you can still reach the centre. Gala Shade and Gazeboshop both teach that order. Locking full height first leaves you fitting cloth overhead. Keep fingers off the slider path. If a slider will not click, straighten the leg rather than hammering the button, and keep all four legs on the same hole.

Anchor for the surface you actually have

On grass, peg every foot and run the guy ropes to the frame, not to the cloth. Gazeboshop warns that strapping the canopy is how warranties get refused, because the load tears the seam. Stake at an angle away from the leg. Keep the ropes where people will see them. Soft ground after rain is a poor hold, and a RELAX FIELD review describes pegs pulling out. On a patio or decking, pegs do not count. You need a filled weight on every leg. Banner Box says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing. Gazeboshop suggests 15 kg up to 3 m by 3 m. Cheshire's event pack says 20 kg. Do not average them, and do not count an empty sandbag as any of them. All Seasons bags split in reviews. The white VOUNOT's bags were called too small. Without a real weight on each foot, you have a kite with hinges.

Take it down

Release the guys or lift the weights first, so a gust cannot take a half-folded frame, then drop the legs together and fold the roof while you can still reach it. The All Seasons 3 m by 4.5 m bag is a tight two-person pack, and the white VOUNOT's fabric is hard to get back into the carry box. If it will not fit, open one slider and refold. Do not jump on the bag. Dry the fabric before you store it. Banner Box says to let wet cloth dry, and a damp coated roof in a closed bag is how mildew starts. If the forecast changes while you are eating, the strike belongs on gazebo wind safety. A roof that stays up all season is pop up gazebo vs hardtop, and leaving this frame out overnight does not make it one.

Low frame, then feet, then people

If the ground is grass, pegs and guys to the steel come before anyone sits down. If the ground is slabs or decking, filled weight on every leg comes first. If a slider fights you, straighten the leg. Hammering the button is how clips fail on the lawn.

Common questions

How many people do I need?
Two for the first open, including the 13 kg Outsunny, and whenever the bag is about 20 kg or more. One reviewer took a known All Seasons down alone. Do not make the first erection a solo test.
Do I fit the roof before the legs are fully up?
Yes. Settle the canopy while the frame is only half open, so you can reach the centre without a ladder. Gala Shade and Gazeboshop both use that order. The roof is already on these pop-up frames. You are positioning it, not building a pole tent.
What if a slider will not click?
Lift the leg straight, then slide again. Do not hammer the button. A forced clip matches the broken spring reported on delivery of the longer All Seasons. If a hook cannot reach the higher hole, use a hole it does reach and keep all four legs matched.
Pegs or weights on decking?
Weights. A peg into decking boards damages the deck and still may not hold. Banner Box's figure for hard standing is at least 13 kg per leg, and Gazeboshop's water bag is about 15 litres when full. Empty sandbags from the carton are not that weight. On grass, pegs and guys go to the frame, after you have checked for services.
How heavy is a filled sandbag supposed to be?
There is no single legal kilogram. Banner Box says at least 13 kg per leg on hard standing, Gazeboshop suggests 15 kg up to 3 m by 3 m, and Cheshire's 2025 event note says 20 kg per leg. Quote the publisher you are following. The bags in these kits arrive empty, and several reviews say they split or are too small.
