Cantilever parasol base weights

Updated: 22.10.2026

The canopy hangs off to one side, so the wind load sits on a cross at the edge of the patio, not on a hole in the middle of a table. Cantilever parasol base weights, in this comparison, are four hollow plates you pin to a steel cross you usually already own. A centre-pole socket will not weight that cross. A light tank with a pole hole is the wrong aisle. The full set of listings is on our [fillable parasol base comparison](/hub/sun-shades/fillable-parasol-base). The cross comes first

A banana, offset, or cantilever parasol puts the pole beside the table and the canopy over it. The base that matches is a cross: four arms, feet at the ends, and plates that sit on those arms. Jati's four-piece set is compatible only with cantilever parasols that have steel cross bases, and the cross is sold separately. Each Jati piece is about 50 × 50 × 7 cm and 15 litres, with about 60 kg of water or about 80 kg of sand. If your pole drops through the table, leave this page. Kawiithn's 25–60 mm title stays off this shortlist on purpose. A sand bag is not the product this page is choosing. The type split is the buying guide.

What these plate sets state

Straame B094DDRZ55 is £38.99, 4.5 from 255 reviews, each piece 50 × 50 × 7.5 cm. The fill pair is 60 kg of water or 80 kg of dry sand. The parcel line of 15 × 5 × 20 cm is not the plate. One review says the plates only weigh the flanges. Straame B094DBS9D1 is £36.99, 4.4 from 268 reviews, with a 48 cm piece. The title says square and one bullet says circle-shaped. One review says the cross was not in the box. Another says the metal links did not stop the stand being pushed through in a slight wind. VOUNOT B0F1CJ7NM7 is £59.99, 4.4 from 1,389 reviews, 60 litres of water or 100 kg of sand. Included components are four slabs. Reviews say you need the cross feet as well. One matching 3 m left the legs sticking out. A repeated complaint is that one piece leaks. Why 60 litres is not 100 kg is the sand or water page.

When the plates do not sit on the feet

The plates have to cover the feet, not merely touch a thin flange beside them. On the 50 cm Straame set, one reviewer found the plates sitting between the legs, weighting the flanges and not the feet. If you can see bare foot outside the plastic, these squares do not cover that cross. Pins that join the four plates are not a clamp that stops the cross walking out. Lay the empty cross on the patio, set one empty plate on one foot, and look. If the foot lands past the plastic, do not fill the set. VOUNOT reviews include a 3 m whose legs stick out, and a hole that is too large. Cococheers uses the word cantilever, claims 150 kg of water, and has no review line. Do not treat that price as a proven cross weight. Filling, once the plates cover the feet, is how to fill a parasol base.

Weight is not a storm rating

Shops do not agree on the kilograms, so this page will not average them into a standard. Opal puts a sheltered 3 m cantilever nearer 80–100 kg, and says no base weight makes a cantilever immune to strong wind. Dellonda's manual for one 3 m banana model asks for a minimum 88 kg and says never to open that model above 5 mph. That line belongs to that manual. Quote your parasol maker, then the base you are buying. A real 60 litre water fill is about 60 kg. Straame's 80 kg and VOUNOT's 100 kg are sand claims in the same shells. If your maker asks for 88 kg, a water fill of 60 kg does not meet that number. Close the canopy when the wind rises. Force 6 is about 22–27 knots. Get help if the cross is bent or the base will stand over a public path.

Common questions

Do the four plates include the steel cross?
Not in the listings that say so. VOUNOT's included line is four slabs and U-shaped pins. Jati sells the cross separately. One review of Straame B094DBS9D1 complains that the cross was missing.
Will they fit a centre pole?
No. These plates sit on a cross. They are not a socket for a 38 mm or 48 mm pole through a table. Kawiithn's 25–60 mm base is a different listing, with no litres and no reviews, and it is not part of this cantilever shortlist.
How heavy should a 3 m cantilever base be?
There is no single UK figure. Opal, for a sheltered garden, puts a 3 m cantilever nearer 80–100 kg. Dellonda's manual for one 3 m banana model asks for at least 88 kg, and that limit applies to that model. A 60 litre water fill is about 60 kg.
Why do UK shops disagree on the kilograms?
They are publishing their own guides, not a British Standard. Opal, Robert Dyas, Baser, Jati, and a Dellonda manual were written for different canopies and different bases. Outsunny-style sets even change the sand headline to 120 kg while Straame stays at 80 kg.
Are sand bags a substitute for plates?
Only as extra ballast on a stand you already have. The round Brislut bag is that product, and it is not four plates pinned to a cross. A bag wrapped on a bare pole is what one Brislut bullet says not to do. If the cross has no weights yet, buy plates that cover the feet.
