Door canopy size

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are about to order 120 x 80 and you are not sure which number is the depth. Door canopy size, on these amazon.co.uk listings, is width along the wall first and projection out from the wall second, and only when the dimension line agrees. The [canopy comparison](/hub/sun-shades/canopy) shows the fields. This page is how to read them, including three projection fields that copy the width. It is not a brand ranking and it is not the statute. Products Compared used the dimension lines in this folder. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

How to read 120 x 80

On these listings, 120 x 80 cm means about 120 cm wide and about 80 cm sticking out, if the dimension line agrees. Width runs along the brick. Projection is the distance over the step. A third figure, often about 23 cm, is the height of the bracket arch. It is not the door height and it is not the projection. Yaheetech prints 120 x 80 x 23 cm and 80D x 120W x 23H cm, with projection 80 cm. D is the depth you stand under, W is the width, H is the arch. If those three name one depth, use it. The door canopy buying guide is the order of decisions once the centimetres are real.

Three fields that do not match

Three listings will sell you the wrong depth if you trust the projection field. VOUNOT grey 120 cm, B09PBGDG5Z, is titled 120 x 80 cm. The dimension line says 75D x 120W x 23H cm. The projection field says 120 cm. VOUNOT black 200 cm, B0CLTZ6CHC, is titled 200 x 80 cm. The dimension line is 0.8D x 2W. The projection field says 200 cm, the width copied into the depth. GGNEBAI, B0DJ5JGH34, has a dimension line of 1D x 3W x 0.22H m. The projection field says 304.8 cm, the width in another unit. Use D and W.

How much projection you are buying

Most of this set is 80 cm out, which is 800 mm. Two listings are about a metre on the dimension line: GUANSU-CN at 200 x 100 cm, and GGNEBAI at 1 m deep on a 3 m width. Apex says projection is often 600 to 800 mm on the canopies it discusses. This set sits in that cluster, with two deeper exceptions at about £130 to £140. A shop line that stops permitted development at 1 m of projection is not Class D.

Width versus the opening

A single door in this set is a 100 cm or 120 cm canopy. The 100 cm anthracite is the tighter opening. Two metres is the step up for patio doors or a bike at the side. Both VOUNOT 200 cm colours are that width at 80 cm out. GUANSU-CN is 2 m wide at 1 m out. Three metres is only the GGNEBAI dimension width. Do not get there by reading 304.8 cm as depth. If the gap between pipes is shorter than the sheet, choose the next width down before you order.

Common questions

Which number is the width?
The width is the measurement along the wall. In a clean file it is the W in a line such as 80D x 120W x 23H cm, and the first number in 120 x 80 cm. The second number is the projection. The height of about 23 cm is the bracket arch. If a projection field repeats the width, ignore that field and keep the dimension line.
Is 80 cm enough?
It is enough for rain on a lock and a short wait at the door, which is what the 80 cm files are for. It is not a covered seat, because the sides are open. Metal Profiles prefers 900 mm or more as that firm's rule of thumb. You can still buy 800 mm if that matches the step. A metre is GUANSU-CN or the GGNEBAI dimension depth, not an 80 cm VOUNOT with the field rewritten.
What width for a normal front door?
In this set, 100 cm or 120 cm. Apex calls about 1200 mm a popular canopy width and quotes a door leaf of about 762 mm by 1981 mm. That leaf is Apex's figure, not a British Standard. Measure your frame. A 120 cm sheet overlaps more than a 100 cm sheet, and it can also hit a pipe the narrower one would miss.
Which listings have a projection field I should not trust?
VOUNOT grey 120 cm, B09PBGDG5Z, where depth, size and projection are 75 cm, 80 cm and 120 cm. VOUNOT black 200 cm, B0CLTZ6CHC, where the projection field says 200 cm and the depth says 0.8 m. GGNEBAI, B0DJ5JGH34, where the projection field says 304.8 cm and the depth says 1 m. The anthracite files, Yaheetech, grey 200 cm VOUNOT and GUANSU-CN agree with themselves.
Does a deeper canopy always need planning?
No. Depth is not the legal test, and a shop's no more than 1 m line is not Class D. On a house in England the portal's porch tests are area, height and distance to a highway, and they do not apply to a flat. Do not multiply width by projection and call the answer compliant. If you are unsure, use the planning page before you treat 1 m as either lawful or forbidden.
What if a downpipe is in the way?
Measure the clear gap and buy the width that fits, or move the pipe before you order. A review that cut a 200 cm sheet is not a specification. Cutting leaves an edge the brackets were not designed around. The fitting page is what to do after the width is honest, not a method for sawing a long sheet on the wall.
