Door canopy buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are standing in the rain with a key, or you want sun off a wall-mounted inverter, and amazon.co.uk has mixed a gazebo, a sail and a rigid sheet under one word. A door canopy buying guide, for this set, is the order of decisions for a bracketed polycarbonate sheet over a door or a window. The [canopy comparison](/hub/sun-shades/canopy) holds the eight listings, with stored shelf prices from about £26 to about £140. Measure the opening before you chase a star count. We did not fit these canopies or run a wind test. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What this guide is choosing

The product here is a rigid sheet on wall brackets. Shade sails, gazebos and a PVC tarp are not in the eight. Open sides still let in angled rain and low sun, so you are buying a hood, not a room. House of Canopies lists UK-made polycarbonate canopies from about £360 ex VAT and names EN 12150 and BS 5516-2. Those standards are not printed on these eight listings. A B&Q marketplace Easy Fit 120 x 80 cm, in 3 mm sheet, was £79.95 on 19 October 2026. It is context, not a row. None of the eight prints a snow load or a wind figure.

Width, then projection

Width along the wall comes first, then how far the sheet sticks out. On these listings, 120 x 80 cm means about 120 cm wide and about 80 cm out when the dimension line agrees. A single door is usually a 100 cm or 120 cm file. Patio doors step up to 200 cm after you have looked at downpipes. Three projection fields disagree with the size string: VOUNOT grey 120 cm prints 75 cm depth and a 120 cm projection, VOUNOT black 200 cm puts 200 cm in the projection field, and GGNEBAI prints 304.8 cm against a 1 m dimension depth. Bracket height is often about 23 cm, the arch, not the doorway. The field-by-field reading stays on the door canopy size page.

Sheet, gutter, and sun

Thickness is a claim, not a strength ranking. VOUNOT bullets say 6 mm polycarbonate. GUANSU-CN says 5 mm with a UV coating. GGNEBAI claims a gutter and UPF 50+ and prints no thickness. Yaheetech prints no thickness either. A gutter still leaves the sides open. Joining is a bullet on GGNEBAI and GUANSU-CN only. Stored bands run about £26 to £35, about £40 to £45, and about £130 to £140.

Fixings and who lifts it

Every listing needs assembly. Across VOUNOT and Yaheetech, the supplied sleeve bolt on brick is too short, too long, or it will not grip. Buyers replace them with plugs, coach screws or Rawlbolts. Two people is the usual lift. The short VOUNOT units sit around 2.7 kg and still draw that comment. GGNEBAI is 10.6 kg. Three short VOUNOT listings share a block near 2,650 reviews. The two 200 cm colours share 5,433.

When the rules come first

On a house in England, Planning Portal discusses a small canopy over an external door as a porch under Class D. Flats are outside that right. Listing or an Article 4 direction can remove it. Greenwich asks for a full application for a new canopy. The 30 square metre porch exemption is not the 3 square metre planning cap. Do not multiply width by projection and call the result lawful. If the wall is listed, the home is a flat, or you cannot tell the wall, stop before the drill.

Common questions

What should I measure first?
Measure the clear width along the wall, including downpipes, then the projection you want, then the swing of an outward-opening door. The size string is width then projection only when the dimension line agrees. Three files copy the width into the projection field. A star count is not a measurement.
Is 6 mm better than 5 mm?
VOUNOT bullets say 6 mm and GUANSU-CN says 5 mm. Yaheetech and GGNEBAI print no thickness. A millimetre on a bullet is not a wind test, and no listing here prints a wind class. If you need a published snow load, you are outside this set. Treat the number as a description, then judge the fixings.
Do I need a gutter?
You need one if water off the ends is the problem. GUANSU-CN and GGNEBAI claim a channel or gutters. The VOUNOT and Yaheetech bullets here do not. A gutter does not close the sides. One GGNEBAI review still sealed open channels. Read the bullet on the listing you are buying.
Will it keep the sun off?
It shades the wall under the sheet and leaves the sides open. A VOUNOT review says sun still comes in from the side. GGNEBAI's UPF 50+ is a claim on that listing, not a result we measured. If you want a shaded seat for the afternoon, this shape is the wrong product.
Are the brackets metal?
Titles mention aluminium. VOUNOT reviews describe plastic brackets, with small aluminium strips on the sheet, and Yaheetech reviews often call the arms plastic. One Yaheetech reviewer says the unit is entirely plastic. Buy the bracket the reviews describe. Do not treat the word aluminium as metal arms.
When do I stop and check planning?
Stop before you drill if the property is a flat, the wall is listed, an Article 4 direction might apply, or a council page such as Greenwich's asks for an application. On a house, Class D is the England test the portal applies to a small porch canopy. It is not a promise that every sheet is lawful.
