How to fit a door canopy

Updated: 22.10.2026

The box is lighter than a door, and then you are on a ladder with a curved sheet and bolts the reviews have already thrown away. How to fit a door canopy, for these bracketed sheets, is a sequence: check the swing and the pipes, assemble on the ground, offer it up, then drill. The [canopy comparison](/hub/sun-shades/canopy) is where the eight listings sit. This page does not rank them. Products Compared used the UK review notes in this folder and public fitting notes from other makers. We did not drill these walls. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you drill

Start with the opening, not the masonry bit. If a downpipe or a cable sits inside the width, the sheet will not forgive it. Measure the clear wall first, using the door canopy size page so you are not trusting a projection field that copies the width. A Yaheetech review says the bracket arch blocks an outward-opening door. A GGNEBAI review bought longer bolts for stipple render. If you cannot tell the substrate, or the wall is listed, stop.

Assemble, then mark

Assemble the canopy before you drill. These boxes do not include a Procan-style template, so reviewers use the cardboard. If you mark from a diagram with no dimensions, you drill a pattern the brackets do not match. On the ground, bend the sheet into the side channels. VOUNOT reviews call that bend fiddly, and the rubber strips arrive misshapen. GUANSU-CN's bullet says to add screws at the joints at this stage. A missing bracket is a stop. One GGNEBAI review had three brackets when four were expected. That sits under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 as a complaint, not as a promise of a particular refund. Mark through the bracket holes only when the assembled canopy is held where it will live, then take it down to drill.

Bolts and the hole

Treat the sleeve bolt in the box as a part you may replace. Across VOUNOT and Yaheetech, reviews call the expansion screws useless in brick: they will not tighten, they are too long, or the plug spins. One exposed-wall review used 8 mm Rawlbolts. Another found a bolt head that would not turn. One sheath was left too deep, so the bolt never reached. Match the bit to the fixing you will leave in the wall, not to a size published for a different canopy.

Sealant, film, and the first wind

Silicone is a seal, not a new roof. It does not make an open-sided hood waterproof in driving rain. Yaheetech's film is a real step. The sheet looks matte until you peel it, then clearer. Peel it before you judge the colour, and raise a creased or torn face before you drill. The first windy day is the test the reviews describe: a side screw popped out, one unit came apart within a week, and one was ripped off and left the bolts in the wall. If the sheet shakes, take it down and refix. None of these listings prints a wind speed.

When you should not DIY

Stop if the wall is listed, the home is a flat, or you cannot tell the substrate. Greenwich asks for a full application for a new canopy. Stop if a bracket is missing, the sheet is cracked, or the only way to make the width fit is to cut around a pipe.

Common questions

Do I assemble it before I drill?
Yes. Build it on the ground, including the bend into the side channels, then hold the frame on the wall and mark through the brackets. These kits do not include a Procan-style template, and VOUNOT instructions are criticised for omitting hole positions. Drilling from a guess is how the pattern ends up wrong.
Can I fit it alone?
Some buyers assemble a VOUNOT in about an hour on their own. Offering the frame up still wants two people. GGNEBAI's bullet says two people, and the unit is 10.6 kg. The short VOUNOT sheets are under 3 kg and the reviews still describe a two-person lift. If you cannot get a second person, do not start the holes.
What drill size should I use?
There is no single size for this set. Yaheetech reviewers split between 9 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm. A 10 mm bit appears in VOUNOT reviews and is not a bullet specification. Door Superstore, Procan and House of Canopies publish bits for their own canopies. Match the bit to the fixing you will leave in the wall, and pilot soft brick so a large bit does not wander.
Should I use the bolts in the box?
Only if they tighten and the plug does not spin. The repeated complaint on VOUNOT and Yaheetech is that the sleeve bolts fail in brick or are the wrong length. Replacing them with plugs, coach screws or Rawlbolts is the normal repair in those texts. A bolt that will not grip is not fitted.
Do I seal the top edge?
Seal the joint with the wall if the listing or a leak says so. GUANSU-CN tells you to silicone the edges. GGNEBAI reviewers added sealant after water came through seams. Silicone does not close the open sides. If rain blows in from the side, you need a different product, not a thicker bead.
When do I stop and get help?
Stop when a part is missing, the wall is listed, you are in a flat, you cannot identify the wall, or the first wind moves a fixing. A missing bracket is a Consumer Rights Act point to raise with the seller, not a prompt to drill half a pattern. A council page that wants an application belongs on the planning page before the hole.
