Teak sun lounger buying guide: checks before you pay

Updated: October 2026

You are about to pay for a teak sun lounger on amazon.co.uk, and the title is not the same thing as the timber. On these listings the six kept rows run from £120.00 to £307.99, all of them say teak or kiln-dried teak, and none of them prints a star rating, a review count, a user-load figure, or an FSC, PEFC, or SVLK line. This teak sun lounger buying guide is the checklist before you pay: species words, mass, dimensions that agree, and what the fold and footrest lines actually say. The full price grid stays on the [teak sun lounger comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/teak-sun-lounger). The Products Compared editorial team read the amazon.co.uk listings on 16 October 2026 and did not run a laboratory timber test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listing must show

A usable teak sun lounger listing names the species, then gives you a weight, a size whose axes agree, and a plain yes or no for fold, footrest, cushion, and assembly. Teak oil on a finish is not the same claim as teak the wood. Meranti and other hardwoods are sold with a teak-coloured oil, and the kept rows here say teak or teak hardwood rather than naming Tectona grandis, grade A, or a chain-of-custody mark. That wording is a claim you can compare with the parcel, not a certificate. The conflicts are the buying information. On B0GY9CDWRS the dimension field reads 60 × 57 × 160 cm and the size line does not use the same axis order. B0GY95XN3P does the same with 55 × 69 × 161 cm. B0GY9CPZSG prints 89.5 × 65 × 57 cm on one line and then swaps the height to 65 cm. If you cannot mark the lounger on the patio from the page, you cannot treat the title as a measured product. The folding teak sun lounger page stays with storage. This section only asks whether the fold is even claimed.

Why about 5 kg is not a comfort

Timber Development UK puts dried teak at about 660 kg per cubic metre. That density is a species figure, not a home test you can do with a tape. A slatted lounger is mostly air, so a solid teak steamer can still be far lighter than a solid cube of the same outline. The useful contrast is a published chair of similar length. Jati’s wheeled teak garden steamer is listed at 19 kg for a chair 60 cm wide and 160 cm deep, at £225 on that shop’s page. That shop price is a contrast, not an amazon.co.uk offer and not a market study. Three of the six amazon.co.uk rows print a mass near 5 kg: 4.81 kg, 5.26 kg, and 5.18 kg. A full-length lounger at that weight is not confirmed teak. It is also not, by itself, proof of fraud. Kiln-dried does not mean plantation grade. It describes a drying step. If you need a published mass near that 19 kg steamer, leave this set. The best teak sun lounger page says the same thing as a conditional answer, without crowning a star winner that the review lines do not support.

Rules that are not printed on the box

Great Britain’s timber rules put due diligence on the operator who first places timber or furniture on the market. Indonesian imports need a FLEGT licence. Myanmar natural-forest teak is, on Timber Development UK’s page, sanctioned and no longer available in the UK and Europe. You will not see that paperwork as a tick box on these amazon.co.uk files. Your own lever is the description on the listing. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality or not as described, and section 22 sets that short-term window at 30 days. If the wood is not teak, that is a description problem to raise with the seller inside that window, not a reason to oil the frame and hope. BS EN 581-1:2017 covers general safety of outdoor seating, including edges. Public summaries of BS EN 581-2 base mechanical tests on users up to 110 kg and exclude weather ageing. None of these six ASINs cites either part, and none prints a user load. Do not copy 110 kg onto the product because the standard uses that mass. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 apply to consumer goods in Great Britain. Northern Ireland’s product and timber rules are not the same page as the GB guidance. Bare frames in this set have no cushion, so a furniture-fire label is the wrong document to look for on the timber. Paying £307.99 for B0HDP19WMJ does not make the pair count true. The title says two pieces and the items field says 1. Country of origin on that row is China, which is a place of manufacture, not a plantation certificate.

What stays on the other pages

Fold, winter covers, and oil are easy to drag into a buying checklist until the page stops deciding anything. If the shed is the constraint, read the folding page before you pay, because four listings say they fold and none prints a folded size. If the honey colour is the worry, the choice between oil and a silver surface is on teak oil or leave it grey, and it is not a species test. Washing steps live on the care page, not here. What belongs in the last look before you click is shorter. Read the kilogram line next to the length. Read both size lines and see whether they name the same chair. Read whether a footrest or a fold is actually claimed. Read the items field if the title says two. Then decide whether an unreviewed teak claim is what you meant to buy.

Common questions

How heavy should a teak sun lounger be?
There is no single legal minimum. Dried teak is about 660 kg per cubic metre on Timber Development UK’s figure, and a slatted chair is mostly air, so a published plantation steamer can still be about 19 kg, as on Jati’s 60 cm by 160 cm wheeled chair. A listed mass around 5 kg on a full-length lounger is not confirmed teak. It is also not, on its own, proof that the seller intended to mislead you.
Does kiln-dried mean it is plantation teak?
No. Kiln-dried describes how the timber was dried. Plantation, grade A, FSC, PEFC, and SVLK are different claims, and none of the six kept amazon.co.uk files states them. A kiln-dried line on B0GY9CDWRS or B0GY95XN3P does not upgrade the 4.81 kg or 5.26 kg figure into a certificate.
Why do the size lines disagree?
On the three GFEROMRF files the dimension field and the size line do not use the same axis order. B0GY9CPZSG even changes which edge is called the height. B0HDP1JNPL and B0HDNYLFX4 print no dimensions. You cannot lay out a patio from a page that contradicts itself, so treat the disagreement as a reason to ask the seller before you rely on the title.
What certificate should I expect?
If the seller is claiming certified teak, the listing should say which scheme and show a code you can check. These six files do not say FSC, PEFC, or SVLK. A missing CITES sticker does not help, because Tectona grandis is not CITES-listed on the CIRAD sheet. Myanmar natural-forest teak is a separate sanctions point, and these pages do not identify a harvest country.
Can I reject it if the wood is not teak?
If the goods are not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject, and section 22 sets that at 30 days. Contact the seller with what the listing said and what arrived. This is not a laboratory identification service, and oiling the wood will not turn a wrong species into teak.
Does BS EN 581 mean it holds 110 kg?
No. Summaries of BS EN 581-2 use 110 kg as the user mass for mechanical tests, and they exclude weather ageing. None of these ASINs cites the standard or prints its own user load. Do not write 110 kg into the order as if the listing had promised it.
