How to use a beach chair

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the folded frame in one hand and dry sand under your feet, and the first sit is when a loose joint or a bent tube shows itself. This is how to use a beach chair from the ten listings on the [beach chair comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/beach-chair): where to open it, how the two frame types work, how to get salt out, and when a first-day failure belongs with the seller. Products Compared did not write a brand manual, and this is not legal advice. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The routine follows those listings and public UK guidance as checked on 19 October 2026.

Put it on ground that will hold it

Open the chair on a patch that already feels firm under your shoe, above the wet strip the tide will cover. Saturated sand near the water sinks more than drier sand higher up. A Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs note, written for Morecambe Bay, says tides there move fast and the sand is uneven. That is one bay, not every UK shore. Check the beach you are on, and check tide times. UK guides point at EasyTide because the water moves while you read. Before you sit, the frame should be locked or fully clipped. Press the seat with your hand. If a pole bows, or a hinge will not sit square, stop. Do not add your weight to finish the job. These listings do not print a wind-speed rating, and neither do we. If the empty chair shifts, that is ground and wind, not a reason to lean harder. Sinking feet and a back acting as a sail are on beach chair for sand. A low seat is a use problem when you cannot stand up, and a design when you wanted to lie back. The low #WEJOY states 18.99 cm, and UK reviews include a painful knee. That is the chair doing what a low recliner does. It is not the same event as a tube that arrives bent.

Two ways these chairs open

Most scissor chairs here are sold as opening without assembly, including the Portal pair and the low #WEJOY. You unfold them until the frame locks, then you sit. The low OVERMONT listing says assembly is required. Portal's UK texts call the put-up easy. The EVER ADVANCED pair is the one reviewers call stiff when new, so fold it once in the garden before a windy car park. Keep your fingers off the hinge as it closes. GOV.UK's note on the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 expects a product to be safe in foreseeable use, and a nip at a hinge is foreseeable. There is no weld repair in this guide. Pole chairs are a different sequence. TREKOLOGY says you unfold the poles and clip the seat on. Decathlon's note for an MH500, a different chair, is the same idea: tubes into the notches, then the fabric. Beach Master's listing says no assembly. The reviews describe fitting tubes. Follow the reviews, and do that fit at home. If a tube is already bent, do not force it. Which chair is worth buying stays on best folding beach chair UK.

Pack it and rinse the salt

Salt left in a hinge is a metal problem. Shake sand out of the seat, the pockets and the cup holder before you fold, because grit makes the next open stiff. Rinse with fresh water when you can. A beach shower or a bottle over the frame is enough. Decathlon's camping-chair note, for a pole chair rather than these models, says soap and water, then dry storage, and not weeks left outside. Open the chair at home until the joints are dry. A wet frame in a tight bag sits in salt overnight. The bag is also a weak point in the reviews. Portal bags developed small holes on first use. A TREKOLOGY zip broke on a second use. The low #WEJOY strap can leave the cushion hanging almost to the floor. If the bag is holed, you can still get home, and you still dry the frame. Do not machine-wash the seat. These listings do not promise a wash cycle. The load line you should have read first is on the beach chair buying guide. A rinse does not turn a 100 kg table figure into a 150 kg title.

When a failure is a return

Stop using the chair if a tube bends on the first sit, if a seam opens, or if an arm support tears. Beach Master reviews describe bent tubes and a seam that failed along a plastic mould line. Oversized OVERMONT reviews describe a torn arm support after a second use. Those are examples of stop, not a rate for every chair of that name. A bent frame is not a repair with tape. A missing second chair is a different fault. ARURU is a set of two, and one UK review said the page showed a two-pack and one chair arrived. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, is the place to start: satisfactory quality includes safety and durability, against the description and the price. nidirect, for Northern Ireland, explains a short-term right to reject faulty goods and a later repair or replacement path. This page is not a solicitor. Tell the seller what failed, and keep the chair out of use. A low seat you simply dislike is not that conversation.

Common questions

Where should you open the chair?
Open it on firm, drier sand above the strip the tide will cover, not in the saturated sand by the water. Check tide times. EasyTide is the public place UK guides send you. Press the locked frame with your hand before you sit. If the empty chair already shifts in the wind, move to the sand page rather than adding your weight to a frame that is not settled.
What do you check before you sit?
Check that every tube is seated and the lock or clip has closed, that the chair is not rocking, and that your fingers are clear of the hinge. A pole chair is not ready when the poles are only loosely joined. On the Beach Master, do that check at home, because reviews describe fitting tubes even though the listing says no assembly. Do not bounce a frame that already bows.
How do you fold a scissor chair versus a pole chair?
A scissor chair, such as the Portal pair or the low #WEJOY, folds shut once the lock is released. Keep clear of the pinch point. The EVER ADVANCED pair can feel stiff when new, so learn the fold before the beach. A pole chair, such as the TREKOLOGY, comes apart into poles and a clipped seat, then a pouch around 35 x 12 x 10 cm. Do not treat those as the same movement.
How do you get salt and sand out?
Shake sand out of the seat, the pockets and the hinges, rinse with fresh water, and dry the chair open before you bag it. Soap and water is the level a UK pole-chair support note describes. Do not machine-wash the fabric on the strength of that note, and do not leave a wet frame packed for days. A holed carry bag still means you dry the metal.
What if a tube bends on the first sit?
Stop using it. Beach Master reviews include tubes that bent on first use or arrived bent, and a seam that failed at a joint. Forcing the tube is not a fix. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the starting point for faulty goods, and nidirect explains the short-term reject path. This is not legal advice. Tell the seller, and do not sit on the bent frame again.
What if a pair arrives as one chair?
That is a supply problem against a two-chair title, which one ARURU reviewer reported. Photograph what arrived and tell the seller. Do not treat a single chair as the set you paid £99.99 for. The same idea applies if Portal or EVER ADVANCED arrives as one seat. It is not something you solve by changing how you fold.
