Steam generator vs sauna heater

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have searched “sauna heater” and opened a page that might be a stone stove or a steam generator. They produce different climates. A dry cabin sits at a high temperature with low humidity, and you ladle water onto stones. A steam shower or steam room sits much cooler, with the air close to saturated, and a generator makes the vapour. This page sorts the seven amazon.co.uk listings in the [sauna heater comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-heater) by the room you actually have. Products Compared did not run a humidity test. Two climates, not two brands

SPATA’s factsheet describes a sauna as usually above 80°C with low humidity, and a steam bath as typically up to about 45°C at very high humidity. Those are industry descriptions of the rooms, not measurements of these listings. The steam rows here print their own bands: the Caiqinlen at 35–55°C and the CGOLDENWALL at 25–55°C. A stone stove that claims 110°C, as the Anjur listing does, is not aiming at that steam-room band. You choose the climate first, then the product that is built for it. On a stone stove you pour a ladle onto rocks, and the stove does not need a plumbed feed for those spoonfuls. A steam generator boils or heats a tank and sends steam to a nozzle. You do not pour ladle water onto the generator and expect the same result. SPATA also says a sauna stove can often use a normal domestic supply. That general line does not match the 4.5 kW and 6 kW listings in this set, which sit well above a 13 A plug on SaunaShop’s shop method.

What the room has to be

A stone stove wants an insulated cabin: timber lining, a door that seals, benches, and a guard around the heater. The volume check for that cabin, including glass, is on the sauna heater size calculator page. A steam generator wants a waterproof enclosure, a vapour seal, a water supply, and a drain. A tiled shower can take a generator. It will not become a Finnish sauna because you bolted a stone stove to the wall. The CGOLDENWALL box list names a drain valve and a safety valve, which matches that wet-room job for a stated 3–4.5 m³. An Italian review says the safety valve vented about 15 minutes after switch-off, so the discharge has to have somewhere to go. The Caiqinlen listing does not state a drain. Neither climate is a health treatment. NHS Collingwood Surgery suggests considering avoiding saunas and steam rooms in pregnancy because of overheating, particularly in the first 12 weeks. Do not read either listing as safe in pregnancy, or as a treatment for heart disease, blood pressure, or diabetes. The Caiqinlen page itself tells people with those conditions, and pregnant women, not to use it unless a physician guides them.

Which listings are which

Stone rows in this set are the Mxmoonant WS-37-WJY at £297.00, the Mxmoonant WS-15-WJY at £269.00, and the Anjur 39984 at £172.22. Both Mxmoonant pages print 6 kW and 5–9 m³, with stones extra and no plug. The Anjur is a dry wall stove with a 3-hour timer and a 110°C claim, though the title says 3–6 kW and a colour field says 4.5 kW, and it prints no room band. Use a stone row when the room is an insulated dry cabin and you want water on stones. Leave it when the room is a shower tray. Steam rows are the Caiqinlen at £193.05 and the CGOLDENWALL at £426.54. The dearer unit states 4.5 kW, 3–4.5 m³, 25–55°C, and a parts list that includes the drain valve. The cheaper unit states 4.5 kW, 220 V, 35–55°C, and a 1–60 minute timer, and it does not state a room volume or a material. The Alvinlite at £123.49 says wet and dry in the title and gives no stone weight and no generator parts. Treat that phrase as unresolved. Named fits, with the review limits, are on the best sauna heater page.

The outdoor wood stove is a third case

The WILLOWYBE at £221.99 is not a substitute for either electric type. It is a 16 kg stainless wood stove, 45 × 68 × 49 cm, sold for an outdoor sauna tent and for cooking. There is no kilowatt figure, no plug, and no room band. A Defra smoke-control exemption was not confirmed in this file. Reviews describe a warped top plate, smoke from seams, and a chimney joint that stopped drafting. Keep the flue outdoors. An insulated cabin and a plan to pour water on stones points at a stone stove. A tiled shower with a drain points at a steam generator. A garden tent points at the wood stove only if it stays outside. If two of those rooms are still possible, stop and choose the room on the sauna heater buying guide before you add a basket of stones to a steam order, or a drain valve to a dry cabin.

Common questions

Can I pour water on a steam generator the way I pour it on stones?
No. Ladle water belongs on sauna stones in a dry stove. A steam generator makes vapour from its own water supply and sends it to a nozzle. The CGOLDENWALL is that kind of machine, with a drain valve in the box list. Pouring a ladle over the casing is not how these steam listings describe the session, and it is not a way to make a stone stove behave like a steam room.
Does a steam room need a drain?
Yes. A generator produces water as well as vapour, and the enclosure has to shed it. The CGOLDENWALL includes a drain valve and a safety valve. The Caiqinlen listing does not mention a drain, so you confirm that from the manual. A stone stove does not need a plumbed waste for the small amount of water you pour on the rocks. The room fabric is different: waterproof and sealed, rather than a timber cabin with a trickle on stones.
Why does one title say wet and dry?
The Alvinlite title says wet and dry, 6 kW, and 220 V. The bullets do not give a stone weight or a steam-generator description, and a UK review says there were no instructions. Wet and dry on that title is not a sorting label you can trust. Until a manual shows stones or a steam nozzle, leave the listing out of both columns.
Where does the wood tent stove fit?
Only outdoors, as a third case. The WILLOWYBE is a wood-burning tent stove and cooker, not an electric stone heater and not a steam generator. Reviews mention smoke and warping after hard firing. This file does not show a Defra exemption. It is the row for a garden tent if you keep the flue outside, and the wrong row for a bathroom or an indoor cabin.
Which listing do I open for a small bathroom?
Open a steam row, not a 5–9 m³ stone stove. The CGOLDENWALL states 3–4.5 m³ and 25–55°C, with a drain valve in the box, and you still have to resolve 220 V against 380V. The Caiqinlen is cheaper and does not state a room volume or a drain. A small bathroom that is not waterproofed and drained is not ready for either. A dry cabin of 5–9 m³ is the Mxmoonant band, which is a different room.
