Inflatable vs hard shell hot tub

Updated: October 2026

You may be picturing a rigid spa with moulded seats, while every listing in our table is a soft inflatable between £394.74 and £745.99. Inflatable vs hard shell hot tub is that fork. Choose an inflatable if you want a tub you can pack away. Choose a hard shell if you will use moulded seats most of the year and you can pay for the base and the electrics. The nine ASINs are on the [outdoor hot tub comparison](/hub/steam-baths/outdoor-hot-tub). None is a shell. Listings were read on 19 October 2026. We did not install either type. Two outdoor hot tubs, and only one of them is in this comparison

An inflatable here is a vinyl or PVC ring, a pump that heats and usually blows bubbles, and a cover if the listing names one. You deflate it and put it in a bag. A hard shell is a cabinet that stays. Outdoor Living's buying guide, written to sell shells, starts around £2,599 in that retailer's range. That price is their shelf, not an amazon.co.uk ASIN we scored. This set runs from the Lay-Z-Spa Aruba at £394.74 to a generic at £745.99. The £660 SENODON pages are still inflatables, three of them sharing a model string. The £745.99 listing is still a bubble tub with no reviews.

What you pay for at the start

The inflatable's upfront money is the amazon.co.uk price plus water, chemistry and whatever the box failed to include. The Aruba at £394.74 names a cover, a Type VI filter, a ChemConnect dispenser and a repair patch. The EASE.ZONE at £667.92 names a cover, an underlay, two cartridges and a 1200 W heater. The Tekapo at £399 lists neither a cover nor a filter. One UK Aruba review added a thermal cover at about £80. A shell adds delivery, a base and usually an electrician. The IET expects a 30 mA RCD, and a new circuit in England is notifiable under Part P. These inflatables mostly omit the plug. Whether six seats are real is the buying guide.

Heat, jets and winter

The Aruba's 110 AirJets are warm air in the water. Hot Tub Geek's inflatable round-up makes the same split: bubbles, not directional water jets. The EASE.ZONE says hydromassage, 130 nozzles and 600 W, beside a 1200 W heater. A review headed Italy said the jets only moved the water. Those comments are not British shoppers, and they are the only written check on that claim. Best Pick UK treats cold-weather heat loss as the trade-off against a foamed shell. We did not measure a lifespan. Only the Aruba names Freeze Shield, heat toward about 10 °C below 6 °C air, and only while the pump has power. That choice is on outdoor hot tub in winter.

Which to buy, with one condition

Buy from this set if you are renting, or you need a tub you can pack away. Inside that condition the file with UK reviews, a listed cover and Freeze Shield is the Aruba, leak complaint included. Do not pay about £730 or £746 for an unreviewed generic and call it almost a shell. Buy a hard shell, from a retailer who specifies the base and the supply, if you want moulded seats most weeks and can fund the electrical work. You are paying for a permanent object, not for a lower bill we did not calculate. If the house is listed, or the garden cannot take the weight, get that answer before a deposit. Both types need a safe supply.

Common questions

When is the inflatable the right outdoor hot tub?
When you want a trial or a seasonal tub you can pack away, on a level base. In this set that is one of nine amazon.co.uk inflatables from £394.74 to £745.99. The Aruba has the UK review trail, and a leak complaint. If you already want moulded seats every week, this is the wrong branch.
When is a hard shell worth leaving this page?
When the tub will stay put, the seats need to be moulded, and you can pay for a base and an electrician as well as the shell. UK retailers in the guides we read start shells around a few thousand pounds. That is their range, not a model we scored. Do not hunt these nine ASINs for a rigid cabinet.
Do air jets replace hydrotherapy jets?
Only if bubbles are what you wanted. The Aruba's AirJets are air in the water. The EASE.ZONE prints 600 W and 130 nozzles, and an Italian review said the jets only moved the water. A shell brochure that specifies directional jets is a different product, and it is not in this table.
Which one is cheaper to run in January?
We cannot say. None of these listings gives a duty cycle, and we did not meter a shell. The GB Direct Debit cap from 1 October to 31 December 2026 is 26.32 pence per kilowatt-hour, so one hour at 1 kW is about 26 pence while it is on. That is not a monthly total.
Can I move an inflatable when I move house?
Yes, once you drain it, dry it and pack it. That is the point of this class. The EASE.ZONE reviews, headed Italy, already complain about the storage space. A shell is a removal job, not a bag. Taking the tub with you does not fix a liner that leaked on week one.
What electrical job comes with a shell?
Often a new dedicated circuit, a 30 mA RCD of the type specified, and an isolator near the tub. In England a new circuit is notifiable under Part P. Our inflatable files mostly omit the plug, so it just plugs in is not a line we can print for them either.
